Virginia, January 33, 1871. 1-tf
The night had sunk on Chappaqna.
The wind was keen, the air was raw.
As forth the fanner went in peace,
With this device on his valise :
" I'm going West 1"
His psnts were short, his boots run down.
His felt hat smashed in at the crown.
And Like a squeaking cart-wheel rung
- The accents of that well-known tongue : '
" I'm going West !"
In White House window, bright and warm.
He dreams he sees TTlyases' form.
Then yanks his trousers high and higher,
Bips fiercely out, and screams in ire :
" I'm going West !"
"Don't try that dodger John Cochrane
cried,
" The e'ree-Trade boys will tan our bide I"
Fpon bis nose a tear-drop shines.
He wipes it on his sleeve, and whines :
" I'm going West 1"
" Beware of those who've read your books !
You'll know them by their vacant looks !"
This was a ' sorehead's" parting cry ;
A silvery voice replied : " You lie 1
I'm going West !"
A sleepy " cop" that morning found
The old man seated on the ground.
Still clinging to his carpet-bag.
Which bore this motto on its tag:
' I'm going West !"
There, 'neath the Frsnkln statue, sat
Old Chippaquack in his white hat.
Like huntsman resting from the hunt.
While from his lips escaped a grunt:
" I'm going West !
