The Magnolia, by Xljrht.
If is a pleasure to visit this commo
dious anil orderly saloon, especially in
the eveuiug. when the ruu-ss of the male
mipnhition t'f Carson anil vicinity get
afloat. Yon find it then thronged with
individuals of every shape, dress and gen
eral appearance, who, having finished
the lauors of the day, are out for a while
to be loose,' in qnest of amusement and
recreation. In addition to a large num
ber of our own business men, and other
permanent relics of the community, an
influx of employees on the Pacific Kail
road a race of quick-stepping, go-ahead,
business looking fellows dressed out in
the latest cut, flow in nightly and make
themselves practically at home in the
Magnolia, by active participation in ad
that is going on. The proprietors,
"Messrs. Gaige & Hay, are polite and
courteous; and by their unobtrusive at
tention they succeed in impressing their
numerous guests with a feeling of quiet
welcome. Even to an unsophisticated
liieal, who could, to say the best, cut only
j;u awkward figure with those who par
ticipate actively in its various pastimes,
the Magnolia oilers a cosy side-seat, from
which he may liKjk around undisturbed
and comment with internal satisfiiction
upon the multifarious workings of the
human brain and heart, as revealed by
gesture, facial contortion, or, best of all,
as let loose in the richest of rich slangs
the not forgotten, but still cherished,
comic and searching phraseology of early
d?.ys in California and Nevada.
Kousd-Housb, Focsdbt asd Maceike
Saor. These invaluable additions to
Carson are, then, really to be. But as
to the site of the buildings, their size,
manner of construction, etc., we have not
been able as yet to learn anything defi
nitely. Our energetic citizen, Col. Abe
Curry, has contracted to do the work,
which is enough to insure its being done
speedily and well. The fearful weather
has kept us from hunting him up to get
the full particulars, which he promised
us, and which we shall try and have
ready for our readers in to-morrow's
issue.
JJoixs Yields Again. The winds Were
oat atplav last night. If anyone hits
picked up Mr. F 's red shawl, or the
disintrefiated parts of .Captain Pray's
lumber yard, please return the same.
Canon ConaollflBtoal Mining Company
Judge Wells informs us that this com
pany was engaged iu prospecting nnd did
some work in the vicinity of our town
about ten years ago. They reprospected
during the latter part of last summer, and
being encouraged in their search for the
precious, began work again in earnest
the 13th of August. A force of four men
was at first employed which has lately
been increased to six. A shaft has been
sunk to the depth of forty feet. Some
average specimen ore assayed at lteno
turnud out 42 50 to the tou. The mine
of the ConsoliilateCoropany, ispleasantly
situated about four and a half miles
south-west lf Carson. The judge and
family have taken up their abode at the
scene of operations, and he has spared
no pains and expense in the way of
building to make pleasant winter quar
ters, and to insure the uninterrupted
continuance of the work in spite of wind,
rain, snow, etc.
Man ob Woman. We yesterday enjoy
ed the privilege of a chat with an old and
esteemed Empire friend, Mr. S. E. Jones.
He, with Judge Morris our lately elected
County Commissioner, and John Hansen
of the Yellow Jacket, forau a trio of as
agreeable, straightforward, and courteous
school trustees as a teacher could wish to
work fur. These gentlemen have been
trying to secure the services of a male
teacher iu place of Mr, Sessions resigned,
but so far they have not been successful,
and it seems that they have alxmt arrived
at the conclusion that they will be able to
put up with one of the softer sex. They
are resolved upon this, however; thut
they will employ no one who shall not
have first given the most satisfactory evi
dence of culture, and of skill in teaching.
The school at Empire is in all respects, as
peasant as a mixed school can be. it js in
reat measure essentiallv primary; yet it
contains a few youngsters who demand of
their tutor that he be possessed of a
thorough and easv familiarity with tne
entire round of the requirements for a
first grade certificate. As to tne deport
ment of the children, that is first-rate,
until the spirit of old nick gets into them.
LrSAtt Rainbow "Quick! Did you
ever see a lunar rainbow? See there!
there! Now: make a note of it!" These
were the words of our excited Senior, as
he rushed back and threw the office door
open. And sure enough, there stood
the rarely-to-be-seen silver arc, distim tiy
traced upon the body of a dense, wide
spreadtng snow-cloud, which seemed
resting for support against the howling
' zephyrs,' upon the summit crest of our
w tstern nills. no else was so lorr.b
nate as to behold this rare phenomenon ?
Who was lucky enough to be looking in
the nvht direction at the auspicious mo
ment last evening ;'. about six, or
may be ten minutes later?
Will Tcne Pianos. As will be learned
bv reference to a new advertisement iu
this morning's ArrEAL Mr. Jacob Zech
will lie here this week and while here
will give his attention to orders fortuning
pianos ana putting tntm in order, l nose
who ought to know say that Zech is very
skillful in the delicate "business of tuning;
and we congratulate our friends here
who don't own pianos that this early op
portunity is to be offered for such as
own specimens of that favorite instru
ment to get them so attuned to the sensi
tive auricular nerves of humanity as that
our amateur musicians may no lunger
transfix us with the twanging of ear
splitting discords.
Lots op Splendid Things in the Dry
Goods Line. We dropped in to see
friend Jacob yesterday morning and have
a chat, with him; and while loitering
about his store he pointed out here ther
and everywhere smae of the elegant
things he and Morris have been receiving
lately. There ere some beautiful shawls
for just a mere song; silk dress patterns
of great beauty and marvelonsly cheap;
furs of surpassing loveliness and ribbons
and tapes and poplins and pins and "lots
of rinirs and things to wear and feathers
enough to plume her." These are some
of Sheyer Jc Munis' Winter stock.
Bad LrtK or Bai Shooting. Which?
Yesterday the mountains around Wash
oe lake rang with the echos of fourteen
double barrel guns which were dis
charged, ibuing at least ten minutes after
the beginning of twilight, as rapidly as
they conld be loaded. Make a low esti
mate and say ."JIKi shots were fired ! How
many ducks then ? Be liberal and say
20. Then we have one duck for every 25
shots ! This was Ixid if.- ( ?) Two of
the sportsmen claim lfi ducks together,
one 12 and the other 4. How are we
then to divide the remaining 4 ducks
among the remaining 12 hunters ? Con
undrum. Mason and Ten Ter Cent. Taxpayers;
Procrastination is the thief of time."
This is the last week for taxpaying. Next
Monday the County Treasurer's books
will be closed ; and all who come after
wards will be required to pay an ciiMif
ioiiI tax of tn per ctnt !
To Advertisers. Don't all speak at
once but bear in mind yon can have
your advertisements changed to your
fancy each month and no questions
asked. A word to the wise is sufficient.
Mb. BrreunoAiR state that on his
way to Carson from Virginia yesterday
he 'beard it mn) or d in Gold Hill that
Ed. Pattea waa dead.
Personal and Speculative. Mr.
John Sproston showed himself in onr
town last evening, and on onr question
ing him we found that he was not on his
usual insurance raid upon our good citi
zens, but ns the special ugeut ol tne
Louisville Lottery; and he informs us
that already over seven hundred thou
sand dollars wortn ol ncKets nave been
sold, and that he has positive instruc
tions to sell none after the 2-ith inst.;
and he will leave for Louisville on the
2(th with his accounts, to be present at
the drawing on the 7th December. Mr.
J. E. Ladd is agent for the tickets in
Carson.
Dcxdebbkbo Minb. Dr. Mont-kton is
at this time one of the happiest men in
our community; and why should he not
be ? He is not married yet, but he is
rendered oblivious to that fact, for the
present at least, by the overwhelming
success of the Republican partv and the
not less inspiring prospects of his pet the
Dunderberg. lie leaves us in a day or
so, for his mine with four'exjierienced
miners from the Crown Point, accom
panied by a brother of Mr, J. P. Jones.
These are auspicious omens. Luck to
the doctor and other worthy Caisouites
interested with him !
Mr. Ccshino. We are gratified, and
so will many others who know Mr.
Cnsliing and have sympathized with him
in his second long and painful illness, be
gratified likewise to learn that he has so
nearly recovered, as to come out yester
day and take a short walk. We hope to
see him soon entirely restored to health.
Continues III. We learn with regret
that Mr. Hochholzer is seriously ill ; but
we are glad to shite that the doctor thinks
he will come out all right.
