The defendant proved to the satisfaction 01 tne Court and jury that he acted in defense of his ducks and chick ens. The case was ablv arfied bv coun sel and submitted to the iurv. On the suggestion of the Court the jury gave a verdict for defendant without leaving ttieir c-naira I lie costs of the action were taxed up to the Chinaman, and by liim paid. Sierra Seminary. We, yesterday, en joyed a visit to this number one school We are pleased to find it up to the old standard. The children are neat, orderly ami respectful. they evince ana we spenk of that which we do know a very creditable improvement. J. hey are taught first of nil to- think. This principle we observed taking root to such an extent that even when the lads and Lasses erred they seemed to be thinking still. The public schools are all the talk at present and rightly so. Their high degree, of success is made certain. Vet in Carson ns everywhere else there will always be found parents who prefer the associations of a private school for their children. We congratulate such parents upon the assurance that the skillful and earnest, ladies who teach the Sierra Seminary have no idea of giving up the ship. Geo. Fbiib. If any body thinks that Ihe courteous and jolly ev-proprietor of the Ormsby House does not know how to run a wholesale liquor establishment, and a make a lively competition trade with San Francisco merchants, let hira call around,' examine stock, investigate price lists, test his liquor and be con vinced of his error. He has on hand a constantly replenished stock of the finest whiskies, wines, ale, porter, etc., and the best brands of cigars in cases. Call and visit George. He is alwavs entertaining. The niiserables annoy iim somewhat jnst now, but his affability is unabated, lie can't answer others because otht rs don't answer him. That is the trouble. J. E. Ladd successor to Ladd Kelly is overun with applications ior laborers of all sorts. He wants 100 wood choppers especially. They have the privilege of working by the cord or by the month to suit themselves. Take notice besides that Mr. Ladd is also agent for the grand Louisville Lotterv! This is the time now nearly run out that you are to put in a little and draw out a pile, first prize, $100,000! A Labeled Kino. The King of Dah homey, who has for many years been celebrated for his eccentricities of cos tume, has jnst adopted a new fashion. Seated on his throne, he not long since received a Scientific Commission arrayed with the blue, green and gold labels, which had been carefully peeled off the medicine bottles brought into his domin ions by Europeans. As the next move will be for his subjects to imitate the roval example, it suggests to our Iieady llelief and Buchu, and S. T. 10 X. dealers, a new field for their enterprises. The Dahomese ladies might also find use for the labels of Cologne and hair-oil bottles, and pomade jars. What the King of Dahomey may have suffered iu loss of dignity, he evidently made np in elegance and picturesqueness of personal appearance. It is not the worst use, however, to which medicine bottles h-ive been put. Female Tooth Carpenters. Apropos of the American lady dentist at Berlin, who has been supposed to be her sex's pioneer in that line of business, the Brit ish Journal of Dental Scttvc. asserts that as long ago as ls;J tnere were no less than seventeen female practitioners of dentistry in England and Wales. A rather serio-comic accident occurred near the depot of the V. & T. K. K. at the 4 A. m. train on Tuesday. The om nibus packed with travelers of both seies had barely smarted off, when the double tree broke andjhe freighteced horses put out for home The passengers at the first intimation of danger tumbled them selves out into the nnfriendv night atmos phere. It was as dark as Erebus, and the air loaded with sand and small peb- e s, fairly howled. Our friend G .not less agile than skilled in the pedagogical porfession, who had perched himself on deck, leapt to the ground, and sped through the horrid darkness after the withdrawing equines as swiftly as Dries back's colt would cleave the air if Abe would only take it away from that old cow mare of his and give the thing a chance. I5ut to return; fri-ht, aided by the rib-searching winds had driven the troubled passengers so far from the scene of the break that the sound of their re treating footsteps were no longer audible. Greenlaw had gone: Ana now to tell the truth, the boy, ' young Jehu' Booth, ticcame the sole grandee of all he could not see. Kattlesxake Dick and Chamberlain were, as we learn from a private dispatch IXrom Davton. convicted vesterdav in the District Court for Lyon County of uignway robbery, lliey will be sen tenced on Saturday. Mr. Sutherland, our worthy mer chant tailor, underwent quite a scare yes- terdav noon. His little daughter while playing cn a dray with some other children fell off and was run over; but we are clad to state that the wheel rasse.l over only one of her feet, and that no bone was broken. Fiiikxd & TJarstoh. Let us encour age home industry. Give these geEtle men a trial. At least, call and examine, their work before you incur the expense of going to Virginia to have pictures taken that are no better than those which Friend & Marten can take for you any day that the weather is fair. Dismiss your prejudice against home productions, and allow yourselves convinced bv the truth. Peg Top seems to be all the go at pre "itent among the boys. Scene yesterday on Carson street. Number of youths pegging awny at a dead top in the ring. Ministerial looking sport passing by, in quires: " Do you git that if yom knock it out? " Boys in unanimous response; " Put a bit in and see." Sport goes off n bis ear. Pat Hkniey having plead guilty re ceived his sentence in the District Court yasterday. Three years more are there by added to his sojourn in our sagebrush tuberaacle. , : , , ,. Chcech Theatrical Company.
