Fabkwcll Gbketisgs Last evening a
number of friends met at the residence of
Judge Whitman in honor of Judge and
Sirs. Lewis who left Carson for San Fran
cisco on the 11 o'clock train. The
opportunity of being with them a few
brief hours before their departure, and of
exchanging a few parting words with
them, wa a grateful pi-ivilego to their
friends who know their worth full well,
and to whom their absence will bring
real pain and sadness. In J ndge Lewis
Nevada loses an able erudite judge, a
scholar, a man of high honor, and a dig
nified courteous gentleman. Of Mrs.
Lewis, for s:;ke of that delicacy with
which a lady's name should always be
mentioned, let us say only, that in her
womanly sphere she was all that could be
expected from the wife of such a hus
band. The judge has not fully deter
mined yet; wuf-thar he will locate and
practice law in K mass City, Missouri, or
in Chicago, although he seems to lean to
the former. We indulge the faint hope
that the judge after all, when he has
made a tour of investigation through the
eastern cities, may hud it pleasant to
return and take up his abode with us
agaiu, in Virginia City.

pot4 mtridixn was at hand. We had
fruitlessly hunted an item, and were
nearly desperate, when to our infinite
satisfaction two belligerent cocks nppear
d on the ercua. Having measured their
f round between the barber's shop and
the Ormsby House, they squared them
eelves for a fight and pitched ia. Un
questionably a crowd was in attendance,
rnd of coarse they did not go back on the
universal maxim of the Pacillc Coast
'yon bet." Great interest was mani
fested at the start, which was intensified
when it bfcime known that one of the
yniiilistic bipeds was named Grant and
th-i other Greeley. The large sum of
from five to ten dollars was wagered and
lost, in bets ranging from two bits to a
collar. Some bet on judsment, others
v n the power of name. To the dismay
t the latter the .cock of the former ctow-

We can olTer something more substantial
than the ghost of Old Put. It is a lus
cious embodiment of femininity now
trapsing our sadly still streets on a singu
lar mission. &he is by no means a skele
ton, nor does she accord with Irviug's
sketch of Dutch ships and Dutch girls
that bulge rapidly and wind up in a
great big poop. She is lopsided; and a
tat white planter r. places the vanished
dimples ef her chin, tihe proposes to
take your picture together with that of
your " loveit and lost," or of your guard
ian spirit faintly traced and dimly shad
owed in the background. Beware of her
charms which are not natural. Her
jwwer lies ia her co-operation with the
dwellers iu the awful regions of the un
known. Children and old men look
out! She looks npou you, seizes you
with her eyes, bewitches you, electrilies
you, mesmerizes yon, eats you. .
Thi Result op Sc.vdat's IIcnt. The
onslaught of the Sabbath breakers wa3
very successful. Seven ducks, mallards,
canvas-backs, etc., crowned the combined
t tfurts of the two Charlies anti Guy. Bill
jlc, bad boy, as agile as a canary, tried
to ease himself over a fence and smashed
the stock of a burrowed gun! B. K. and
V". 'caught twenty-nine little ducks, and
an unknown hunter who bagged only oue
unfortunate gave the same to them, so
that they might be able to epeak of their
luck ia round numbers; as if such feU
lows needed aviv assistance iu making
tilings round! The colored "Mint drop "
i.ud his char -in" mustang have not Uvu
heard from yet,
Bkeakino Gkodxd. We accepted the
invitation of Col. Carry to be present and
lend a hand in breaking ground for the
foundation of the new railroad building.
We were to put in our appearance at
eight o'clock, but owing to the virtuously
la'e hours of the proceeding night we
t.tiled to reach the ground before a corps
of Mongolian pick slingers had already
been ut work a couple of hours. We
i gave oue dig. Durst our collar unit quit
on thj assurance of the Col, that that
was enough to render us immortal. A
hundred years hence, and we ecu say;

Adjournment op the Public Scaooi,.
We noticed yesterday bevies of deligh
ted boys and girls on their way to school.
The Run was shining cozily and they all
seemed happy at the thought of again re
suming work and the games of recess
hours. Iney were disappointed. However.
Their festival is postponed until to-day.
We sympathize with them in their dis
appointments for we Know Jiow it is our
selves, having not yet grown go old as to
forcet the vouthful swellings of the heart.
The trustees tried very hard to have all
things i-eady, but the stoves got contrary,
as usual iu cold weather, and refused to
work. Boys and girl all come out to
day and make a good beginning which,
tht y say, half ends the job.
Cattle. A larg e herd of mixed eattle
were driven through Carson yesterday.
We ore told that they belong to the cattle
king, L- E. Jones of Gold Hill, who is
having them driven from Washoe up the
Faveuext. Mr. Rice, who likes to j
have everything smooth around him, is
having an excellent pavement made in
front of the express office. It is lament
able that certain proprietors alone Carson
street who own break neck sidewalks do
not feel remorse on account of snares
which they are laying for the footsteps
of the unwary, and d j not emulate the
example of Mr. K.
Gorso to His JIins. Doc. Munckton
told us last night that he meant to go to
Dunderbnrg the original Doctor Jacob
Townsend to-day. rle will be coming
in from there one of these times with just
a fonrteen-mule team of bullion. No
nonsense ; he mill, sure.
