NO HOKE SUNDAY FARO DEiLWC
We were witness, yesterday, to the
drawing of a compact entered into be
tween the various proprietors of faro
games here in Carson, to refrain, hence
forth, from dealing their games on Sun
day- This indicates an acquiescence in
a religious requirement of tie times
which is altogether tommeudable; and
it is none the less so because it comes,
voluntarily from the gamblers them
selves. It is by making such decent
concessions to popular notions as this
that the sporting fraternity may disarm
the factions opponents of the license
system, the workings and beneficent re
sults of which it is needless fons to re
neat, this paper having already discussed
the subject Yery fully when that subject
was a matter of pabac interest, ilay
we not hope that the gamblers of the
other counties of the State will see fit to
emulate the vrry worthy example thus
set by their Carson brethren? If the
licensees of gaming tables will only in
sist npon observing the outward require
ments of respectability, why may not
the business of faro dealing claim as
much consideration from public opinion
as that other careful observer of the sa
eredness of the Christian Sabbath, the
Stock Board?
Air we unreasonable in our suspicions:
possessed with the Devil of uncharity;
whelmed in the gulf of depravity ana
all cuHaedness that we do continue to
suspect the honesty and motives and the
acts of Schuyler Colfax? We own that
his grinning and intrusive Young Men's
Christianizing; his super-excellent, glib
sad imperturbable morality; his over
bearing temperance; .his bullying love
far the Sabbath school and general
goody-goodness, scrapes against a raw
edge which doubtless is a natural sin
within oar composition; and so it is that
we are prone to look upon the recent
South Bend speechifying of the ex-vice
President as the froth and gas which ef
fervesce at the bidding of a man who can
wt ud and talk on acvthinR in the wide
world, at a moment's notice the special
pleadings of a man who is determined
to thwart his accusers by manufacturing
sympathy for himself as rapidly as he
finds himself in a place where a lying
ingenuity fails of getting him clear of
taint and suspicion. Ihe quibble to
which he confesses when he owns to
having given an evasive answer to his
accusers last Snnuner, is the veriest pet-
tifoccerv and all unworthy of a man
who has made a love for morality and the
technical virtues so conspicuous a pre
tense as he has.

having presumed to allude in very

VTMtehill was too ricidly truthful in his

after wasting some of its withering satire
by calling Whitehill a " Professor " and

There is' a train now, we understand,
which leaves San Fnincisco, daily, for

and it is with a hope of persuading the

We are informed by the White Pine

th wishes of the people there. Very
likely, but then tlus is no gooa reason
why the said county should not pay its

It is the present intention to end the

taken tin debated and voted upon. An
effort was made in caucus to postpone
action npon Caldwell's case till uecem

dilative of the Republican majority
declaring that he is not entitled to his
seat.

a good deal ot animation ana cleverness.
She seems well entitled to the popularity
which she has acquired for herself in
Virginia and elsewhere that she has
been. The other characters in this play
were well sustained by the very capable
stock company that Mr. Piper has pro
vided for this engagement. To-night
Miss Mordaunt will appear in a drama
written expressly for herself, entitled
" Hearts are Trumps," in which she sus
tains three characters, not the least at
tractive of which is " Dolly Varden."
This is said to be a highly entertaining

in each of which pieces Miss Mordaunt
will sustain the principal characters, the
occasion being hisr own benefit.
