That aluonimI condition of the men tal pr.xes wiii.1. is cll.l the lu--t of Ok-e too oftfn finds its oJ.jectsuf att.ick moD4 a class of i-rsons whose char artrr would s.tm to i.iomise to give thuu immunity from such "diabolical VJSsiou" as mre elf-kiug ambitioD, Time was when Newton Booth was looked 011. and somthow so carried himself. a to setiu eutiUed to be regardeil as a refined and scholarly .rt ol iraon with too much of cul tured conscience not to take a very lively interest iu the general political iuteresU of hia country, but with too niaeh of a certain sense of a self respectful reserve and freedom from a mere common am bition to be willing U stand as a person al exemplar of, or champion for, any set of party principles or candidates; and never to be at all thought of as a prin cipal party in wrangle over such achemea aud performance as should look to his own personal advancement. We dare say it was thought by aome ajood and slow thinking people, with an nndefined but exaggerated idea of "res pettabiUtv." that when Mr. Booth indi cated bis willingness to accept of the office which he now holds, he had per formed a handsome act of condescension; and that he had done it with reluctance aud in accordance with a lofty and self sacrificing sense of duty. We will con .& that iu the campaign of 1371, while we felt couvinced that Booth would mn wrii with the Republicans and get the entire strength of his party (for the ever.loy.d wiug of the party then was tka aiiDureut minority) we also thought that he was of better aud truer ...., -r thin to let his name ever be used nlace or thins which should at all compromise him or his promises; and it never entered our thought to believe li.t he would or could acquire or de- i,.r. anvthin!! like a morbid thirst for .-.facial station. What then is the pop- i ., .nuzc ment at findiu" that not only is Governor Booth, in disregard of his ft repeated pledges, an avowed candi date for the Senate; ana not ouiy lat willing to be so much of a disturbing and intrusive element in the public af fairs of his State as to become the central fiire for the pugnacious propensities of j the Sacramento I'tao to rally themselves open; but. more amazing and startling than all. the peevish head and front of a third party movement, conceived and or ganized and pnt in the field upon no better plea and for no better purpose than iu anticipation of his defeat iu the councils of the Rep-ib.intn party itself, and to make sure that a certain pro portion of Booth candidates be started in the general ruck for the Legislative memberships, regardless of the results of the Republican connty conventions and primary meetings. The demorali zation thus developed is not only sur prising it is inexplicable save upon the repugnant hypothesis that Governor Booth cares less for the paity which placed him in power than he does for the gratification of his own political ap petites, aud has been utterly poisoned with the virus of self conceit and a weak and self destructive personal ambition. The situation thus alluded to is a very remarkable one and not at all encourag ing. The countenance, or rather, to be atrictly and technically correct, the in apiration, which Mr. Booth has lent to the so-called Taxpayers' party of Cali fornia creates the lamentable possibility that enough Republicans will vote for the candidates of that organization to give assurance of success to the Democ racy, while, at the same time it makes it a moral and political impossibility that lie can be the Republican selection for the Senate. We will not shed, nor pre tend to shed, any crocodile tears over !.;. nttlitieal suicide of Governor Booth, ttnr since he has developed the pecu liarities of bis own individual political .!.( the sooner he is lata nnner ine sod which grows for the class of impo tent self-seeker to which he belong, the better.) but we cannot but deplore the occurrences and perverted logic of events which have led a Republican Governor to be advised to the coarse which Mr. Booth has seen fit to panne; far while it is nest to impossible that the nicidlrw and violent severance of the ties which bonud him to the Republican party ran be of any benefit to nims.ii. . liber temporarily or i-ermatieiitly, the oiiseiuenec cannot be other than hurt, iul to the patty nj.on whose lovul mem bers he has thus volunteered to Tent his rr-tfu! and unmanly spite But Mr. Booth has so cleared the political air as that the future is entirely possible 01 interpretation o far as the near ana principal differences of the coming Senatorial struggle are coueerned : The St uator who wilt succeed Mr. Casserly will 1 either a Democrat or an unpol luted Republican. It will not be Mr. Xewton Booth. Ine uemocrauc -ouvemiou - wi..i. There is no lite in 11 ana can didates are hard to obtain. Dr. H. S. Nichols has been nominated for Senator. There are these points that can be carried against the various counts in this dispatch, namely: First. Ihat the said Taxpayers party is to be regarded in some such an un favorable light as to its relationship witto the Democracy as a certain disingenuous Reynard was with relation to some fabulous bunches of grapes which Lung out of his reach. Second. Henry Edijerton, with all his declamatory powers, is the most leaden Jonah that any political boat ever tried to float with: and Third, the lack of "life " in the Demo cratic Convention of Sacramento county is where the sudden acidity of the grapes for which Mr. Booth's mouth has been watering is most painfully mara test. Tm Snnreme Court of the State of Ohio has just delivered a very impor tant decision and one that will be ol vast benefit to the cause of popular education if its tone and purport 6hould prevail. It decides that the Bible has no more of a natural or organic right in the public schools than any other book -just the same and no more than Comstock's Philosophy or Daboll's Arithmetic. This is eminently just and right. Let us have our education in one dish and our religion in another and not attempt to mix them. Whes old Tecumsch gets his vertebra1 column in a pugnacious curvatnre he says things with a very deciaa wire edge, as in the following concluding sentences: m Tnrlinn Ttnrean received to-day from the War Department an official letter from Lieutenant Colonel John B. A fire and a mob broke out about the same time. The mob seems to have rased the more fiercely and to have been the more diflicult of snpres- sion. They broke open and plundered houses; and after sacking a Honor store drank so extravagantly that some of them fell off of roofs and were killed. They pelted the police and the firemen and even stoned the priests and smasned their chapels. The military finally turned out and quelled the disturbance.
