SPu ar2cn Satin gippral CAHSOX CITY: W(dandi7 - August 20, 1SJ3. Mr. Loiu:el!y, of Minnesota, and Coa pressional fiime, tLon-h a notorions demagogue, and dettnuined to rule or ruin any local political party xsiik which lie may be connected, is yet most able, Teady and eloquent speaker, eb-.I can command an atn'ienec on most any oc casion that m?.y afford hini fin opportu nity to speak. For the purpose cf &l fcating the Washbnrne xring of the Re publican party in Minnesota, he recently connected himself with the Farmer's luovuiuent, or Granges, in that State, and is now the old man eloquent of that new party. On a recent occasion of a meeting of the Patrons of Husbandry lie thus addressed t lie in, and to the point : I am glad to see that yon, yemrst If, of your own notion, hare concluded "to t.ike the bull ly the horns;" and that yon hare got tired of hanging on to his toil; that you propose after this to tfour otm t inula Hi; tnat you nml you have come of age and can dispense with your guardians; that you nml you pay most of the taxes, and furnish most of the Totes, and you Lave determined to rule this country. You are ri''ht. That is what Coium bus discovered this country for. This is the people's country, asd thet mcst ecxe rr, and those who don't like it can leave it ! The men of li . 6 did not shake on" the tyranny of Georga III. to leave their descendants under a worse tv- ranuy the tyranny of corporations, the tyranny ot money. m " " Shall he who struck the lion down pay the wolf homage?" Our ancestors fled from their native land to escape the tyranny of hereditary lords, whose pretensions were satisfied by the traditions of centuries. Shall we submit to the tyranny of shoddy lords, petroleum aristocrats, men of yesterday who from their palace cars and lordly mills, look down npon the multitude as " hewers of wood and drawers of water." Our nation wag born of a fight about a stamp act and a tea tax; shall it quiet ly submit to the doctrine that the crea tures of our own legislation, the railroad corporations, have "vested rights" to tax our industry to the limit of their discretion; to reduce us, if they see fit, to a peasantry; to send us back to the era of spinning wheels and wooden shoes, and that we have no remedy from this absolute despotism except emigra tion or revolution. No, my friends, you have proclaimed the true doctrine, "live and let Live," "Justice to all," 'Privileges to none." Already the storm of your indignation has reached within the walls of the dominant political party of the State. In conclusion, I would say through you to the people of Minnesota, come together and organize for reform, borne tjt you do not like me. That is your privilege. I concede your right, while I am astonished at your conclusions. Dut I ask nothing at vour hands save to work with yon for the common cause, and surely that no man will deny me. I am not an issue in this contest. Put all personal feeling, all prejudices, all selfishness aside; make it a battle for principles on the highest plane of politi cal action; set your teeth and go forward; select your own leaders and stick to them, and we will show these county seat and cross roads small potato poli ticians results that will astonish them; we will make them open their mouths so wide on election day, that they will have to sec their ears back. I thank you for your kind attention. Report fram Lake Tabor. Lace Tahoe, August 10, 1S73. The Republican State Judicial Con vention of California has been postponed till the 10th of September, for reasons set forth in the following: A meeting of the Republican State Central Committee was held at San Fran cisco on Saturday. There were present : AlessTS. Van Oyte, Bnerman, Iteed, Sedgwick, Lougee, Atherton, Washburn, Bates, Eastman and Conroy. After the transaction of general bus iness, a discussion ensued in regard to postponing the time for holding the State Convention, when the following was presented, and on motion of H. Ii. Reed was unanimously adopted : Wheeeas, The State Judicial Conven tion of the Republican party has been heretofore called by the Committee to assemble at Sacramento on the 20th day of Angust; and whereas, no proclama tion has yet been issued by the Execu tive of the State for such judicial elec tion, and grave doubts exist whether we are to elect one or two judges; and whereas, it is highly desirable that tbe Executive power of the State should pass npon that question before the Con vention assembles, so as to know whether to nominate one or two judicial candidates, and this Committee has de ferred further action to as late a day as is possible, to get notice to the delegates of the respective counties, oe ii Hesolvtd, That the day of the meeting of the Republican State Judicial Con vention be postponed, until Tuesday, the ltith day of September, 1873. The Secretary was then directed to notify the Chairman of the different County Committees of the State of the change in the day of holding the State Convention. Gold, llaji; greenbacks, 66?i87i. In an affray at Salt Lake, on Monday morning, iienjamin Maynard, a rougn character, better known on the Pacific coast as "Big Ben," shot and probably mortally wounded 1. W. Grant, a sa loon keeper. The ball passing through the body of the latter. Maynard, on his arrest, alleged that he is used as a police spy and informer. There is much feel ing over the affair as Grant is a quiet and peaceable citizen, and more trouble is expected. The Stage running between lloke lumne Hill and Mokelumne Station was stopped by two masked men on Monday evening and robbed. The passengers and driver were robbed: W. H. Duryea, of Dutch Flat, of $1,500 and a gold watch ; M. Davidson, of San Francisco, of 30, a diamond ring and watch, and H. Ray, of this place, of 5; also a chinaman of $10. The robbers broke open "Wells, Fargo k Co.'s express box, but finding no treasure, destroyed most of the papers and letters. The officers are in hot pursuit. A reverend gentleman in San Fran cisco, last Sunday, delivered a sermon in defense of the scaffold. According to the sensational headings of the Chroni cle, he put the Abolitionists hors de combat, took his ammunition from the bible, concentrated his forces, fortified his position, discharged logical bomb shells, gathered in the spoils, and gave a parting shot. Co-opebation. In this country the co-operative principle is rather experi mental than otherwise. It has failed in a number ot instances, Irom causes which might perhaps have been avoided. These failures do not, however, militate the general advantages to be derived from the system. Our people are not so patient as they are in England, where the rewards of labor are meagre, and the expectation of high profits much less extravagant in consequence. There the aggregate advantages obtained from as sociated capital and energy are astonish ingly satisfactory. Ia such enterprises much depends for success upon the management of the business embarked in. The directors and superintendents must be men and women of energy, pop ularity, integrity and ability, of econom ic habits, and who take a deep interest in the work they have to perform, and push it with an indomitable will, deter mined to win. In tho absence of such officers, with these qualifications, the chances are, perhaps, more than even against making co-operation profitable. The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company have declared a dividend of $1 nor share, navable on the 20th instant, i The dividend aggregates $50,000. There can be no doubt, savs the Vircinia Enterprise of vester- day, that one great cause of the present low stage and early giving out of the water in Carson River is to be found in the denuding of the mountains of their timber, formerly the heavy timber shaded and protected the snow and it melted awav gradually, thus Keeping good stage of water in the river nearly all summer. Now, however, the hills being stripped of their timber the snow has no protection from the sun and it all goes off with a rush during May or as soon as the first warm weather makes its appearance. For this state of affairs there is now no remedy except in the construction of reservoirs at the head of the river and its tributaries, wherein to store up a supply of water for use dur ing the months ot summer ana tall. l early, as the remaining lorests are felled, this water trouble will increase and the water season grow shorter: for, all the timber being cleared off, the snow will all at once disappear (except such drifts and patches as are shaded by rocks) as soon as the sun has acquired sufficient power to melt it. There will then be a single msb, a flood and the water season will be over for the year. Late dispatches concerning the health of Emperor "William are calculated to create great interest both in Europe and in this country. Considering the pres ent complicated state of affairs on the other side of the Atlantic, his death at tnis time would be nothing less than a great political disaster. He is now in his seventy-seventh year, yet his influ ence with that of his Cabinet has a marked effect on European affairs. IIbt Operations. A dispatch from Washington of august 1G, says: Incon sequence of the great pressure for gold and sliver coin, the secretary ot the Treasury, yesterday, ordered the Phila delphia Mint to run to its fullest capac ity in the coinage of gold and silver alone. The Mints at Carson City and San Francisco are also instructed to run to their full capadity, working the force overtime to the extent necessfry to car ry out the order of the Department. The Coinage at San Francisco this month will be exclusively trade dollars and double eagles, to the amount of three mil lions of dollars. The monthly edition to the stock of coin in the country has averaged $3,500, 000 since the 1st of April, and it will con tinue at this rate during the remainder of tho year. The recoinaee of gold is progressing at the Philadelphia Mint at the rate of 3,uw,uw per inonin. xne consignment of the new trade dollars to London proved entirely satisfactory.
