it parson gailggppral CAItSON CITY t Taeaday Oetober 7, 113. THE REDEMPTION OP THE FRAC TIONAL, CCRBEXCT. The depreciation ex silver means that thera is no adequate employ ment for it in the United States. It is kept doing duty where it is super abundant, and withheld from circu lation where it it wanted. There is a great deal of loose talk about a resumption of specie payments bnt no proposition that we have heard of of a practical beginning of the op eration. Let Mr. Spinaer be an tfcorized to advertise his readiness to bur id all the fractional shin plasters now floating about the East ern States, and to paj out trade dol lars and smaller silver cqnal in fine ness therewith, and there will be a beginning mace that will seem actual, practical, and business like. Probably, so soon as everybody was satisfied that a shinplasier was cs good as the hard chink the hot de mand for silver would cease. There it between $40,000,000 and $30,000, 000 of this fractional currency afloat. It is likely that the redemption of one-third of that sum would be all that wonld be demanded. Anyhow, the present abundance of silver coinage indicates the point at which this redemption experiment might be made with the least trouble. One year's production such as has been comics from the Crown Point and Belcher daring the two years past would come pretty near placing the fractional currency on a par with silver. The problem of getting creenbacks up to the standard of gold wonld be another proposition. Getting the postal currency out of the way would, however, be an en tering wedge which might help Congress to see the way to a larger result. The botanical fact still ex ists that large oaks from little acorns grow. Colosel EoBErss,Superintendent of the Enreka mining and smelting company has been, we learn by the Sentinel, presented with a gold mounted cane with feelings of min gled pride and pleasure on the part of the donors ; and received the same with assurances that the gift was appreciated and highly prized. We have always admired this well worn ceremony. It is as harmless as it is free from all intrusive origin ality. The Municipal Authorities of New York demurred to the proposition of giving public recognition to the Evangelical Alliance now sitting in that city. Their objection is that the Alliance is a Sectarian affair. The objection is well taken although, as we suspect, the objectors wouldn't have found cause for objection if the thing- to be celebrated were the Pope's birthday. - Joseph Abch is to .be. received with extra honors in Boston. Lie will probably be marched over the burnt district, given a" dead head ticket to see the great organ and treated to a feest of wind in Fanneil Hall. - Then with a codfish ball, a doughnut, a Greek speech by a Har Yard Professor and a enp of tea his inner man will be refreshed. Oxb Charges Cbamxb wa up be lore Mr. Justice Van Eagen at Pioche on Wednesday last, charged with the crime of arson. The cir cumstances were decidedly suspi cious ; bnt there was not enough of direct testimony to justify his hold ing so he was set at liberty. Thiers delines to go to Nancy un til the present crisis is past. Nancy ought to let the old gentleman alone especially in view of the fact that he is a great-grandfather. Bcixiox from Europe keeps pour ing into New York. It will be tarn bled, forthwith, into the tub-treasury LATENT TELEGRAMS. Xew Tork, October 6. Edward S. Orn Local Admieable Cbichtojj, P. Henry Clayton, Esq., has been pene trating the bowels of the Great East; and being come as far toward the gleam ing star of Western civilization, as the Austinian oasis, and eke resting there for a space, and being fallen npon by the scribe who so admirably and industri ously provides the readers of the Reese River KecfUle with their daily rations of localised pabulum, he yielded the germs of the following iute resting relation : Hon. P. Ila!. Clavton, Speaker of the ThiJ House of tbe Nevada IjCyisUture, who has been sojourning at Belmont for some time past, acting as counsel lor tne di-fcnss in tne Sampson murder dial. arrived from that place hut evening. We interviewed him and he kindlv fur nishes us with some facts in connection with criminal an.i other matters. In the case of Sampson, charged with the mur der of one IklcSIalicu, at Duckwatcr, the jury on the final ballot stood 2 for man- laugtiter, I tor murder la tna second decree, 2 for mnrJcr in the first degree and 7 for acquital. The case was con tinued for the term bud tne defendant admitted to bail in tbe sum of $3,000, wfcie-n was lurninted wita Messrs. Grimes, Self, Taliman and Sontliworth as securities. An application for a change of venue was made, but was denied by the Court. Mr. Clavton in forms us that the evidence developed the fact that MeMahon had frequently made threats against the Ufa of defeadant and only 10 davs before the tragedy had sent the defendant word that he would kill him. I'nele Hal expresses his belief in the entire innocence of his client of the crime of murder and is confident of securing his acquittal at the next trial of the case. In the case of Hall, sentenced to be hanged on the 17th inst., a writ of supersedeas has beta granted by the Supreme Court, and a hearing will be had before that tribunal during the pre sent term. Mr. Clavton informs us that there has been a marked improve ment in the Belmont mines during the past few weeks; and he expresses great conndence in the ultimate prosperity oi tee district. Entrance fee, 10 per cent, in all the above races, three or more to enter, two or more horses to start. Entries will bo closed the day .previous to the race at 7 p. M. Several noted horses are here and it is more than likely that we will have several ex citing and closely contested races. It is probable that several of these horses willl participate in the com ing Carson races. Carlton, the Defaulter. From 'Af irb.-lo'. A dim-tor of the bank when questioned npon this subject, said: "I went to the bank yesterday and at noon inquired for Mr. Carlton, when some one said that he'd stepped out a little while before. At this time there: was a run on the bank, and Cariton, whose duty it was to be present and direct iuatt is, was fre quent! asked for. One and two o'clock passed, and still Carlton did not appear. Later, his continued absence created some anxiety, and myself and others began to feel oneasT. He came to the Trust Company so highly indorsed that we had net the shadow ol suspicion that he Lad been recreant to his dutv. In view of the suite of affairs, it was thought he was out looking after the bait's in terest and calling in loans. The day's business was ended at four o elect, and still Carlton did not appear, when sus pieions were entertained of something wrong. This morning the truth came out that ho was a defaulter." It was true. Carlton made away with $350,000 in Government securities and railroad bonds, which were in a safe recently built, and had sold them. It seems that the Secretary had been in the bank about Jive vtars, and had never been suspected of wrong-eloing. A visit was paid tohishonse, at No 52 South Oxford street, Brookltn. It is a handsome brown-stone front. Three female ser vants were found there, and they said that Mr. Carlton had not been seen since Friday morning, that Mrs. Carlton died about three wee ks a -o, and that a cousin of his was taking charse of the two children. The efforts that have been made to find Carlton resulted in tracing biia to several hotels in town, and finally to Jersey Citv, where he took the New Jersey Central train. A Ductal Mcrdeb. Of the recent killing in Elko county of the "wild Irishman"-Henrv MeCann-bv Tho mas M. Jones, the following, which is the story as told by Carlyle Lowe, a man in the employ of the Joneses, describes a very vengeful, passionate cruel murder. Here is Lowe's story; Jones, his father, brother and Lowe were engaged in corraling some horses that were trespassing on the former's place, when McCann walked hurriedly up the road, jumped over the fence, passed bv Jones, and when some ten feet from him picked np a rope which was on one of the horses, thus preventing the animal from entering the corral. At this juncture Thos. Jones fired the first shot, hitting McCann io the back. At the report of the pistol the horse became frightenedand starteel to run, he wounded man still holding the rope in his hands, but after going some 15 feet he fell to the ground, striking on his bunds and knees. Jones then went up to him and shot him three times more, twice in the back and once in the head, McCann expiring almost instantly. Some of the neighbors came np anil took charge of the body. An examination of the corpse showed that one ball had passed through the top of his head, entering at the back; another had entered near the left shoulder blade and came out just below the right nip ple ; while the fourth ball had entered the back pari of the right thigh pasg through the fleshy part. The deceased had no weapons on his person. BnoLtm Enxcto. It is evident from the following story that Mr. Dodge is not made of the staff which may be fooled with, with impunity : Bed Bluff, October 4. Yesterday boat 4 o'clock r. x. on Pains's Creek, twelve miles from this place, a shooting affray occurred in which two brothers were killed by a Mr Dodge. It seems that the victims, John and Lee Alberty went' to Dodge's house, and John Al berty went to the kitchen door in the rear of the house with a pistol in his hand. Mrs. Dodge saw him and ad dressing him said : " Don't shoot, Mr. Alberty." 8h then ran off screaming. Dodge then ran to the kitchen door when John Alberty fired at him. Dodge then took np a double-barrelled gun and fired a shot at John Alkerty from the rifle barrell, the ball entering at the lower edge of the scapula on the left side, passing through the chest and making its exit from the right breast Pet ween the second and third ribs, caus ing instant death. L.ee Alberty was then some thirty ards from his brother, and fired at Dodge without effect. Dodge then turned and discharged the other barrel of the gun, which was charged with buckshot, two of the shot taking effect in Alberty's right arm, one entering his right breast between the third and fourth ribs, and the othe-r en tering the right side. The elilSculty was about the laud on which the atlray took placa. Dodge is in charge of the Sheriff. NEW TO-DAY. BARGAINS! BARGAINS!!
