The pn ss for coining nie-ney is from
the ceh brated iron foundry of Morgan &
Orr of Fhiladelphi i. It is fifty per coiit
larger than any other coins press in ti e
world, and is unsurpassed in point o"
style, finish 'and strength. Ii is the
Aj-.a of the world in its line. The reader
wiil better comprehend the magnitude of
this affair when we state that its weight
is lo,(XK pounds. The objH.-t of build
ing a press of tbi size is to secure the
entire force of the toggle joint, and
thereby cut cleaner the hues of the coiu.
The rollers of the press are of American
steel, catt, hammered and finished in
the foundry at rhiledelpLia, and are
i laimej to be superior to the imported
article. The novel character of the press
attracts d m;:eh attention in Philfuleilii:i,

Morpm & Orr, the makers of this
ni'ijuiitkf nt piece of machinery, have a
historical connecti.-.u with the mints of
this contint r.t. They built the niMiiiiu-t-ry
for the As;sy Office, that of theCom-mrre-Lil
street M:nt, and lho Carson
Mint machinery. The firm also con-utruc-ted
machinery for the three mints
in Mexico, and one in Lima and coining
presses for the mint projected by the
unfortunate Maxiraiilian. One set of
machinery for a mint in an interior city
of bocth America was qnite a novelty in
its way. It appears that the site of the
establishment is an almost inaccessible
region, the approach involving the asce nt
of several ranges of mountains by tortu
ous trails. The transportation of the
machinery, a most difficult t.isk,"waa ac
complished by the ingenuity of the
builders, who disregarded the arbitrary
rules of mechanics, and kept the wi ight
of each piece within 40J pounds, where
by the managers were enabled to take
the whole concern to its destination UMn
the backs of mules. The mint is still in
good running order, and, to the novice
who watches its operations, the inichiu-
ry appears to be as colossal as that of
iuv similar insuiuiicn.
Mr. Orr, who has come out li.-re to
assist Snr.-erintrndent IVHcek, of the
Philadelphia Mint, in the charges acaiiist
tlcncral La Grange, states that the
machinery of the new Mint is infinitely
superior to that of any institution of the
kind on the continent. .. r . l wr.

to Ictj a special tax to raise about $1,

THE ETKKKA 8ETIXEI
We reproduce, as follows, a copy
of the entire issue of the Eureka
Sentinel of Friday last:
EUREKA DAILY SENTINEL.
JB1DAY, NOV. 21, 1873.
WE STILL, LIVi
SLIGHTLY WSI'IOIBED, ECT STILL- IS
THE KINO !
With its hitherto fair proportions
greatly reduced, IbeSEXTiXEi. greets
its patrons, lho cause of this cur
tailment is doubtless understood
throughout the State. On the morn
ing of the 20th about half past 12 a
fire broke out in one of those incen
diary institutions, a Chinese wash
house, a few doors sontli of the Sen
tinel building, and in three nsinntes
tho whole block was in ilanies. Our
dwelling, fnrnitnre, clothing, print
ing ofiice. inclndinft presses and
material of every kiml went with the
rest. Friends tried hard to assist rts,
but little of value was saved From
the printing cilice a small proof
nress. three "cases' of advertising
tvpe-, and three galleys of matter,
were all that could be rescued from
the flames. This is the sum total of
onr oiliee, audit is with this scanty
outfit that we attempt once more to
appear before the public. A bran
new office, however, is enronte from
San Francisco, by the very fastest
mode of transportation, and the
same will be put in shape on its ar
rival jqst as rapidly as willing hands
can accomplish it. Our building-
a little larger than tlie old one is
clieady half completed.
We haven't the type to give many
particulars of the conflagration.
The principle losers are; Dan. Mor
gan, three thousand dollars; Mrs.
(ioniette. two thousand five hundred
dollars; Mr. Adolpb, one thousand
live hundred dollars; D. C. Sherlock,
one thonsand five hundred dollars;
Dr. Chamblin three thousand five
hundred dollars; Luther Clark, one
thousand dollars; McMillan & Booth,
two thousand dollars; II. Vorbcrg,
two thousand five hundrcil dollars;
C. Schaefer & Co., two thousand
dollars; J. M. Kellog, seven hundred
dollars, and the Sextixel twelve
thousand dollars.
The above figures are as near as we
can approximate.
The firemen and citizens did all
that men could do to stay the pro
gress of the fire, and it is due to
their alm- st superhuman efforts that
the rest of the town thank Heaven
was saved. Language is inade
quate to express our profonnd grati
tude toward the many kind friends
who so promptly tendered their ear
nest sympathies, and at the same
time gecernufly, yea notly, came
forward with material, and substan
tial aid. We can only say that we
shall do all that within ns lies to
discharge the enormous debt of grat
itude under which the big hearted
people of Eureka have placed us.
Our thanks are also due to many
of our contemporaries for offers of
assistance, as the following telegrams
will show :

With specious front of water colors put
upon the old and oft-impainted cause,
the jobbers are at work, actively tortur

know men who have for many years
made politics their stud v; whose business

known to the professional omee-seekcr.
They have nsed their talents and their
money, not to enlighten tbe people con
cerning their rights and the abuses of
those in power, but rather to corrupt
and deceive the people, and secure their
blind snpport.
And now these fellows come before the

Good may come of all this, but wo can

fruits of this motley movement, by the

cases a pi'puLir expression of hostility to
corporations, and opposition to any form

of this, was to kill in the Knrnp.an

raising money on American securities.
Under the jealons anil suspicious eve of

the integrity of the I!epul,li- was donbt-c-d,

is the work of Dolly Varden.

THE SENTENCE OF TWEED.
Following is the sentence .f William
M. Tweed as pronounced ry Juue
Davis:
Win. M. Tweed, you stand convicted
by the verdict of a juiy of twc.ve honest
men of tbe large number of crimes
charged .igaint you ia one indictuu r.t,
and that vtriuit, in the opinion of the
Court, could not lave been otherwise
without a violation of the o,.;hs whi. h
the iurv had taken and an utter disregard
of the obligation under which they
rest d to speak the truth and the whole
truth. With ail the opportunities you
had. had you faithfully performed your
duties to the public vou wouij nave
won the honor and respect of the whole
community. But you saw lit to pervert
the opportunity you possessed and the
power witn wnicn you were cioineu, in a
more wicked, more infamous and more
outrageous manner than any injustice of
like character which the whole history of
the civilized world contains. Instead of
protecting the public, you plundered
it. Iusteatl of standing guard where the
law placed jon, over the treasury of the
countv. vou ttrew inai treasury open,
not merely to your own rapacity, bv.t
also to me averice oi vour ussoeimes.
under circumstances which mnko it
transparent that you were cngagd in a
concerted conspiracy to plunder the
treasury of this county, in which your
self end vour associates iu crime were
nrincirHillv to benefit. The evidence on
this subi ct cau leave no manner of
doul.t in the minds of anybody. The
commencement of it all was tbe entering
by yon on your duties a3 the President
of the Board of Audit on the 5th of May.
The very next day after that your career
of plunder bepan, and from that day for
ward consecutively until the whole 1UU
accounts before that Hoard had been
audited and certified, and warrants is
sued, and money paid, the evidence is
conclusive that the whole proceedings
were instituted to carry out a concerted
plan to enrich yonrse-lf and those asso
ciated with you. If there was no testi
mony, that alone in my judgment would
be conclusively established by the fact
that on each of thesa several claims as
they were passed and ultimately paid,
your share of plunder was clear
Iv fiscd and prescribed at twenty
four per cent, the share of your asso
ciates had been fixed by a somewhat
similar standard of plunder. It is im
possible to believe that the distribution
of 199 cases in which moneys were re
ceived on these warrants that just 21 per
cent of each sum thould be always al
lotted you witbont an understanding in
advance by concerted arrangement that
this exact sum should be your fixed pro
portion of tbe moneys of which the
county should be plundered. It is in
Tain to suggest that your trial and con
viction has been (be result of any par
tisan feeling; thut this wae after all, ss
one cf the jurors semmune d on the panel
expressed it a struggle between the ins
and the outs." No; the whole struggle
has been between honesty and fraud,
between virtue and crime. The Jndc
here, in vindication of the non-partisan
nature of tbe prosecution, alluded to the
Times in first giving tbe figures to the
light, ai.d to the ftreat assistance ren
dered by Charles 0"CouDor and Samuel
Tilden "in preparing the legal proceed
ings, and continued: It would be
wrong and unjust to entertain for a mo
ment the idea that your conviction has
been the result of persecution at the
hands of any person or party. It has
been the result of evidence so clear and
plain that I never have seen a case
where the evidence was so utterly over
whelming and where it was so impossible
for a jury to fail to come to a just at d
conclusive verdict. Throagh the whole
of this trial you remained up to the veiy
moment of your conviction as calm and
serene as though you relieel upon your
innocence when it was overwhelmingly
apparent to all that your serenity was
only that of audacity that it was confi
dence in the omnipotence of corruption
rather th.m reliance upon your innocence.
Tho Jadfe emphasized this si nteuce by
bringing bis clenched hand down upon
th desk. The eiuty of the Court now
s to pronounce upon you se'utence, a
sentence that may be aueijaate to your
crimes.
