Som. one haa aet afloat on the aea of jonrcaliam thia very truthful eatimate of what many conceive to be the auperior and more uaeful of the money metale: " No people in a great emergency ever found a faithfnl ally in gold. It ia the moat cowardly and tr.aoheroua of all mctala. It makea no treaty it doea not break. It haa no friend it doea not aooner or later betray. Armiea and nation, are not maintained by gold. In timea of panio and calamity, ahipwreck and diaaater, it becomea the agent and minieter of ruin. No nation ever fought a great war by the aid of gold. On the contrary, in the cri tic of the greateat peril, it becomea an enemy more potent than the foe in the field; but when the battle ia won and peace haa been aecored, gold reappeara and claima the fruit of victory. In our own civil war it ia doubtful if the gold of New York and London did not work ua a greater injury than the powder and lead and iron of the rebel.. It waa the moat invincible foe of the public credit. Hold paid no aailor. It waa worth moat when our fortunea were the loweat. Kvery defeat gave it iucreaaed value. It waa iu open alliance with our enemiea the world over, and all ita energiea were evokud for our deatruction. llutaauaual, when danger had been averted and vic tory ..cured, gold awaggered to the front and aocured the auprcmacy.’’ THK 4 IIANPIUS IIKIII.KKS. ■Mura of Megan anil Paid from Denver in Bulle. They were hardly noticed, while the contesting teams from the Iaike Sujierior and Colorado mines entered Denver witli flying colors in |ialace cars and a great flourish of trumpets, accompanied by enthusiastic delega tions witli their pockets tilled with coin. The Montana champions remained in the background until tho great day, when tliev beat all comianitors and claimed the trophies and honors for Montana. The first symptom is hoarse ness ; then the child appears to have taken a cold or a cold may have ac companied the hoarseness from the start. After that a peculiar rough cough is developed, which is followed J>y the croup. The time to act is when •ho child first becomes hoarse; a few doses of Chamberlain's Cough Kemedy will prevent the attack.
