Baker having to attend the funeral of Eva Gal lagher, the 11 year old daughter of Mr. and Mre. J. B. Gallagher, and grand daughter of J. L. Wines, formerly of Eureka, who died at the borne of Mr. Baker, at Oakland, Cal., on the 16th, he requeited that the hearing of the argu ment in the case of Soballenbergar vs. Guptil, Comins, et al., ha oontinued. The Court and oounssl for plaintiff con tented, and the case was oontinued to September 3, or later if Mr. Baker oan not be present at that time. Ntaia v*. J. P. Rum at al. Last Monday at Palisade the oriminal eaee of the State against J. P. Raine W. H. Raine, Wm. Hammond and S. S. Carney came up before Justice of the Peaoe Pettlngill. Mention was made in the Hextixel tome weoks ago that Ennor bad brought suit in the District Court against the above named parties for dam age*. Ennor had constructed some dams and ditches whioh the defendants are said to have destroyed and he lately swore out warrants against them. The parties in terested all reside in Pine Talley. District Attorney Breen appeared for the prosecution and the defendants were represented by E. Farrington of Elko and Capt. Palmer of Carlin. All the parties in the action were not ready for trial and on motion the case was continued until September 17 before the Bame Justice. A Peculiar (ass. The Carson News of the 18tb inst. says: In the Supreme Court this morning oo ourred a legal battle between Hon. Tho*. Wren and J. Poujade, in the case of Hayes vs. Davis, of White Pine county. Both gentlemen made well-considered, stroDg and pointed arguments, and a brief by Hon. Henry Rive* wm also submitted. The case is a peculiar one. Davis, an ex ceptional editor with money to loan, loaned money to Hayes, taking notes se cured by oounty scrip, which Davis aft erwards lost. Davis and Hayes thso agreed that efforts should be made to find the scrip or have it re-issued by legisla tive enactment. An act wm pMsed pro viding for re-issue of the scrip to Davis. Hayes now objects to such re-issue. Pou jade appeared for Davis, the appellant, and Wren for Hayes, the respondent. A Meritorious Testimonial. Candidates Take Notice. At the last meeting of the Nevada Press Association, held in Reno, a resolution was passed that political advertising should be paid for in advanoe. A question has arisen whether this includes notice of conventions, eto. The resolution, it we remember oorrectly, referred to individual advertising, such as oounty candidates running for office, eto. It was resolved that any paper running individual adver tising without pay in advance should lose its membership in the Association.—Car son Appeal. lu Favor of Fnalou. Hon.Thos. Wren arrived here yesterday on bis way to Carson, where he Is engaged as oounsel in a oase before the Supreme Court. He says the people of Eureka are practioally unanimous for Bryan and Sew ell. He is in favor of fusion on the elec toral tioket, and suggests that the State Silver Convention nominate a Democrat, a Populist and a Silver party man for elec tors and suoh a combination will reoeive the support of all Bryan men in the State. —Reno Journal, Aug. 16. The oil refinery built at Fresno, Cali fornia, by the Sunset Oil Company is in operation. Its capacity it 1,000 gallons per day. The latest theory in connection with Theodore Durrant 1s that be was insane at the time he committed the murder of Blanche Lamont and Minnie Williams in the Emmsnuel Baptist ebnroh. Some time previous to the m*ders he was tiok and oonfined to his room for six weeks, being delirious part of this period. His friends now say that be had not recovered from this attack at the time he commit ted the murders. Circus vs. Felines An amusing incident occurred during a session of the Populist convention at Ellensbnrg, Washington, last week, and shows that childish curiosity has at least some part in a Populist's makeup. While the vote was being taken on Lieutenant Governor a cirous parade pasted the con vention hall, and immediately a doxen motions to adjonrn were offered, but the Chairman refused to entertain them. The delegatee, however, left the hall in a body to view the parade. After fifteen minutes the delegates returned and the vote for Lieutenant Governor was announced. l.uwerluic Hates. The Western Union Telegraph Company has announced a general reduction inlooal rates between points in California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada, to go into effeol September 1st.
