Washington. — While (Sermtmy's latest note to President Wilson was de livered to the state department .Mon day through the Swiss legation, ruble dispatches from Kttrope brought infor mal ion that the Austro-Hungarian gov ernment hud caused another communi cation to he dispatched to the presi dent. asking that immediate negotia tions for peace and an armistice be entered into without awaiting the re sults of the exchanges with dermany. The Vienna government asserted that it adhered to the same point of view expressed by the president in his last communication upon the rights of the Austro-Hungarian peoples, es pecinlly those of the O.echo-Slovaks and Jttgo-Slavs, anti requested that he begin overtures with the allied govern ments with a view to ending itnmedi | ate hostilities on all Austro-Hungar I Ian (Touts. Regarding the renewed as surance in the German note that the constitutional structure of the tier man government has been and is being changed to democratic lines, it is pointed out that the truth of this state ment and the scope of the changes al ready made or projected, after nil, are matters to he dealt with in con nection with peace and not in arrang ing an armistice. A strong disposi tion is evidenced officially to yield to the apparent intent of both German and Austrian negotiators to continue these two essentially different func tions in one phase of the negotiations. NO TALK OF PEACE THERE. Allies Continue Drive That Will Send Huns Back Across Rhine. Hippoc rates refers to an epidemic in 412 B. C., which is regarded by many to have been influenza. Every century hns had Its attacks. Beginning with 1831 this country has had five epidem ics, the last in lSfid-90. There Is no occasion for panic—influ enza itself hns a very low percentage of fatalities—not over one death out of every 400 cases, according to the N. C. board of health. The chief danger lies in complications arising, attack ing principally patients In a run-down condition—those who don’t go to bed soon enough or those who get up too early. THE SYMPTOMS Grip, or influenza, ns it Is now eal1c<i. Visually begins with a chill, followed by aching, feverishness, and sometimes nausea and dizziness, and a genernl feeling of weakness and depression. The temperature is from 100 to 104, and the fever usually lasts from three to five days. The germs attack the mucous membrane or lining of the air passages, l.ose, throat and bronchial tubes; there Is usually a hard cough, especially bad at night; oftentimes a sore throat or tonsillitis, nnd frequently all the appearances of a severe head cold. THE TREATMENT Go to bed nt the first symptoms, not only for your own snke, but to avoid spreading the disease to others—take m purgative, eat plenty of nourishing fond, remain perfectly quiet nnd don’t worry. Quinine, aspirin or Dover’s Powders, etc., may be administered by the physician’s directions to relieve the aching. But there Is no cure or spe cific for Influenza—the disease must run its course. Nature herself will throw off the attack if only you keep up your strength. The chief danger lies In the complications which may arise. Influenza so weakens the bodily resistance that there Is danger of pneu monia or bronchitis developing, nnd sometimes inflammation of the middle ear, or heart affections. For these rea sons it is very important that the patient remain In bed until his strengrh returns—stay In bed nt least two days or more after the fever has left you, or if you are over 50 or not strong stny in bed four days or more, according to the severity of the attack. EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS In order to stlrauliite the lining of the air passages to throw off the grippe germs, to nld In loosening the phlegm and keeping the air passages open, thus making the breathing easier, Vick’s VapoRub will be found effective. Hot, wet towels should be applied ever the throat, chest and back between the shoulder blades to open the pores. Then VapoRub should be rubbed in over the parts until the skin is red, spread on thickly and cover with two thicknesses of hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck, ns the heat of the body liberates the In gredients in the form of vapors. These vapors, inhaled with each breath, carry the medication directly to the parts affected. At the same time VapoRub Is absorbed through and stimulates the skin, attracting the blood to the surface, and thus aids in relieving the congestion within. HOW TO AVOID THE DISEASE Evidence seems to prove that this is a germ disease, spread principally by human contact, chiefly through coughing, sneezing or spitting. So avoid persons having colds—which means avoiding crowds—common drinking cups, roller towels, etc. Keep ui> your bodily strength by plenty of exercise In the open air, and good food. Above all, avoid colds, as colds Irri tate the lining of the air pnssages and render them much better breeding places for the germs. KEEP FREE FROM COLDS Use Vick’s VnpoRub at the v-rv first sign of a cold. For a head cold melt a liltle VapoRub In a spoon and ciiale the vapors, or better still, use Vapo Unb in a benzoin steam kpttle. I. fills Is not available, use an ordinary t kettle.
