COLUMBUS, Ohio., Jan. 7. The United Mine Workers of America at their meeting: today ratified the plan under which the recent coal strike was ended. The, vote was 1,639 against 221. The vote was the climax to a stormy session, in which the radical element sought to block approval of the project. Under the terms of settlement the pres ident's commission will fix the basis for the wages of miners. 1 o Underwood Urges Speed In Treaty of Peace Legislation By United Press WASHINGTON, Jan. 7. Senator Underwood, in the senate today, served notice on those working for treaty com promise that if they do not speedily reach an agreement he will call up his resolution for a conciliation committee. The Amer ican consul at Tampico has advised the state department that Gabriele Porter, an American employe of the Pennsylvania-Mexico company, was shot and killed by a Mexican federal army offi cer, December 21st The department announced that the consul had been di rected by telegraph to "report further information and if warranted to urge the legal authorities to arrest and pun ish the guilty." The department so far has not received complete report of the details of the murder of two American employes of the International Petro leum company at Port Lobos. It is be lieved these three killings may bring a new strain in Mexican relations if it is shown that Carranza soldiers are responsible. At It Again The three weeks' vacation has ended and the pupils are again back to their studies. The vacation was enjoyed by everyone but more than one expressed their desire to be back in school, and now that they are back in school they want more vacation. What a fickle world. Big Game Saturday Saturday there will be a big basket ball game between Carson and Gardne ville at Gardnerville. This game will be only between the boys for the Gard nerville girls have no team. But the one game will be full of pep and we believe it will be enjoyed by all. is understood that the first business be fore the new conference will be the Fiume question. The next business probably will be to work out Hungarian and Turkish peace settlements. The first session of the new conference will probably be held before the end of January. A Good Start Sometime ago perhaps a month a meeting was called by the Parents and Teachers' association to investigate the matter of constructing a new gymnas ium for Carson High. A number of points were brought up by the different members of the association and finally after much discussion a motion was passed to appoint a committee to invest igate the matter. This was certainly a good beginning and the pupils of the school are very enthused over the affair. So don't get behind in your plans, members of the association, but hurry and build. A Delightful Program to Be Given Next Friday, January 9th, at 8 o'clock, a meeting of the Parents' and Teachers' association will be held in the assembly hall at the high school. A very enjoy able program has been planned and every one who will be there will cer tainly be pleased with it. It was semi-officially stated toda that the British and Ital ian officials who have been conferring in London will arrive here Thursday night. It is said the general conference of Allied leaders will probably begin here Friday. The first semester is almost over and everyone is" waiting to see if the finals will makt the courses clear 'for the rest of the term. There is no denying the fact that an unusual number of deficien cy cards have been sent out this semes ter and more are expected. This is a blot upon the work and in order to keep up the standard it is every single stud ent's duty to see that he is presented with no deficiency cards in the future. If this is not done for personal pride alone, it should be done with the true spirit to make the Carson high school have a banner year in scholarship. General Urquize, secretary of war. announced today he had received official advices that at least 1,0(X) persons were killed in the state of Vera Cruz in Saturday night's earthquake. Dispatches indicate the toll to be much greater than at first believed. " The board of appraisers named to de termine the value of the right of way through the Nellie V. Davis ranch, over which will pass the road in the Carson Lakeview cut-off, late' yesterday filed their report with the county commissioners. By the terms of the appraisement Mrs. Davis will receive $350 for the land used, about three acres in extent, and the county will erect a fence on each side of the road and twelve foot gates at either end. - The report, it is stated, will be ac ceptable to all parties interested. The appraisement committee consist ed of W. P. Harrington and George E. Kitzmeyer, representing the county, and Geo. H. Meyers and E. G. Winnie, on behalf of Mrs. Davis. EVANS GETS CONTRACT At a brief meeting of the county com missioners yesterday afternoon, at which bids were opened foi the wreck ing of the old Kelsey building on Car son street, the award for doing the work was given to Wallace Evans. His bid was $265. Bids were also received from Johns & Richer, $290; G. A. Gray, $273. Ed Marr put in a bid for the same amount as Evans and to determine which 'should have the job lots were drawn. Bv United Pressl SACRAMENTO, Jan. 7. Abraham Ruef, sentenced to fourteen years' im prisonment in connection with the San Francisco graft prosecution, literally becomes a free man today. Ruef for some time has been on parole and expiration of his sentence merely means that the term of his parole ends. Because of exemplary con duct, Ruef has been credited with sixty-three months of prison service. SEEKING PAROLE CONDITION VERY SERIOUS This morning at 2 o'clock Henry J.
