' PARIS, May 1, by mail. July 2, 1921, when Georges Carpentier climbs through the ropes to face Jack Demp sey, will be the most important date in the sporting history of France. For the first time a Frenchman has attained the staus of an international figure in the boxing world and France as a nation is backing its "idol" and fer vently hoping for his success. The nation-wide interest is intensified by the fact that France as a whole is decidedly backward in a sporting way especially in boxing, which is an Anglo- Saxon game. And this is the first time a man representing France has been able to meet an Anglo-Saxon as an equal. Coupled with this is Carpcntiers' extraordinary popularity. If Carpentier knocks out Dempsey he will take his place as the greatest of France's sport itig heroes. Now that the date is definitely fixed the "cafe dopcsters" are beginning to figure on Carpentier's chances. The lur id word pictures of Dempsey as the "ferocious tiger-man" have served to dampen somewhat the optimism of the dopester. The most optimistic of them manage to convince themselves that Georges has a 50-50 chance, at least, taking Dempsey's record and weight into consideration. Their main reliance seems to center on the "lucky first punch" and Carpen tier's previously demonstrated ability to deliver this punch. They are con A pipe's a pal packed with P. A.! For years he had been supplying a considerable portion of this city with wood. The decease was a native of Canada, where he was born 79 years ago. Two brothers survive, Cyril of this city and Charles of Canada, besides his brothers the following nephews and nieces mourn his passing: Charless Ouillette, George Ouilette, A. B. The dopesters comfort themselves with .the idea that Carpentier is faster than Dempsey and may be able to utilize this speed in the first few rounds to land the "lucky punch." " According to this cafe chater, Car pentier's whole plan of campaign is bas ed on this idea. He will start trying to land the knockout from the instant the gong rings. The general idea is that Dempsey will try to do exactly the same thing. J The sporting element is planning upon an unprecedented migration to New York to see the mix-up. According to present indications France will send more adherents to cheer Georges than have ever traveled such a distance on a similar errand. Meanwhile Georges has not been content to rest upon his laurels as Europe's premier boxer. He has been busy gathering in the pounds, kronen, ! pesetas, guilders and francs that go with the laurels. In the past two months Carpentier with his sparring partner has toured England, Sweden, Denmark. Spain and Algeria, slamming his hardy sparring partner with one hand and rak ing in the coin with the other. His friends claim that he has amassed more than any other European fighter ever dreamed of getting enough so that Georges isn't worrying whether the Ger mans pay or not. Likewise, with characteristic Gallic foresight Georges is salting away the the national joy smoks SNOW STOSM ARRIVES Last evening a real snow storm found its way into this valley aqd for a time it looked like the belated storms of last winter had found their way back to this end of the world. For several hours there was a regulation winter storm, re sulting in about three inches of the beautiful before the clouds broke away. The result this morning was beautiful as every tree, bush and plant was dec orated with wet snow, and where foliage was heavy, tree limbs were snapped off and bushes bent to the ground. Several trees in different parts of the city were uprooted and some damage done to shrubs and plants, but as a whole the storm was beneficial, as it means better pasturage and the grain that is up will be greatly benefited. The net result is that Georges won't have to worry about the wolf at the door if he should happen to wake up July 2d with Dempsey standing over him. Unlike most fighters with his prestige, Carpentier isn't trying to cut much of a figure in the well-known night life of Taris. Only occasionally is he seen in the all night joints in the Rue Caumar tin and even then he keeps training hours and dallies little with the spark ling wines. At present, Carpentier is figuring on retiring after the little affair of July 2d win or lose and devoting himself to his business interests.
