Great holiday trade all over the country is the report from every di rection. It is a convincing man ner of demonstration that, good times are with us. The railroad presidents appear to have learned yesterday that the president of the country has a mind of his own and is out to use it in his own way. Which is what the peo ple expect him to do. The weather bureau tumbled to the fact at Washington yesterday that there was a great blizzard mov ing from the northwest. We could have told them all about that Sat urday night. And she was sure a bird. The east has a heap coming. In the south they were having some rain while we were wearing our blankets. Railroad tracks down there are gone and traffic at a stand still. The cold has its disagreeable features, but in comparison with results attendant on warm winter rains Boreas seems the preferable companion. Big gains were made by the camp in 1909. Those of tuls year will dwarf past records. Be with the winners, which is possible only by the wise investment of the money you earn. Get Into good real estate, your own home, a well advised com mercial investment or a sanely se lected mining stock. Kither of these lines will return large profits during the year. Ml'Rl’HY MWRKI'KKHK.VTKD. New York's New Mayor Sides With the Tammany Boss—Makes Appointments. NEW YORK, Jan. 3.—Mayor Gay not gave out today his list of ap pointments bo far as he was able to snake them and said that his rela tions with Charles Murphy, of Tam many Hall, had no Influence. When asked if the political lead ers had been consulted in making appointments he said: “I feel that there is one great act of justice that I must do. I was nominated with out even a suggestion being made as to what I should do as mayor. Since election Charles F. Murphy has call ed on me three time, each time ask ing me to appoint the best men to he found. His suggestions were few; he urged nothing and kept saying to me that the responsibility was solely with me. “I fear there are a good many peo ple In this town, who do not know Charles F. Murphy. Some of them seem to think he has horns and hoofs. I can only say of him that he has acted clean politically with me. I would advise some good wom en and clergymen who are writing to me about Charles F. Murphy and what they call the white slave traf fic to go up and see him and say a kind word to him. They may be sur prised. "Thou shalt not bear false witness, is also one of the commandments. There are more vices than one.” The mayor in naming his ap pointees appends also a brief person al and political biography of each.
