One admirable thing about Lieut.
Shackleton’s exploring trip is that
nobody criticises his conduct or
doubts his statements.
Two more battles will exhaust the
powder and shot in Nicaragua. After
which the combatants will have to
assail each other with beets and ba
nanas.
Weston will try again to walk
across the continent in 100 days. He
missed it last year by five days. It
seems a trifle, but Weston will con
cede nothing to Father Time or Dr.
Osier.
Witnin another year it is possible
that the scientists will be able to tell
what wages are paid to workmen on
the Martian canals, the kind of ma
chinery they use, and whether or not
they have any insurgents up there.
According to eastern market
reports the cranberry crop is only
one that has not been cornered or
manipulated in the interest of high
prices. There Is relief in sight for
those who can be satisfied with cran
berries.
The silly letters writen by rich
New York woers show that no woman
is justified in demanding damages
for a breach of promise made by one
of the parvenus. On the contrary,
she ought to be thankful that she es
caped.
A New York preacher has called
much wrath upon his head from
amon the craft by declaration that it
is the preacher who is responsible
for most of the divorce scandal about
which the pulpit is so often deeply
distressed. We agree with the bold
New York brother. If the ministers
looked more uron the fitness of,
couples presenting themselves with
licenses to wed than upon the fee in
prospect, and acted accordingly, us
ing such judgment as God may have
endowed them with, the divorce
dockets would shrink rapidly.
Contact has long been in the cop-|
per eye as a promising camp as soon
as provided with railroad facilities.
The latter will be furnished this year
by the new road building south from
Twin Palls, a’so it is aanong the
strong possibilities that Contact will
be shipping ores into this district be
fore the end of the year for treat
ment. We are the nearest smelting
center to this new one as well as
many more that come to the
front very rapidly as soon as given
rail.
The Evening Excuse would have us
believe that the University Club is
dependent for Its existence upon its
bar receipts; either that or that it
is an association of tipplers who
would not associate unless they could
tipple. Either way. and we disbelieve
both, there is still utterly lacking
any excuse for the attack of the Ex
cuse upon District Attorney Reeves,
who is proceeding strictly under the
law as he interprets it, and it is
pretty plain in its provision that all
who sell liquor shall pay license, if
the district attorney did not do his
duty, whether the public is or is not
willing to wink at dereliction, at the
building up of law for one and the
taking of it down for another, there
would be cause for complaint. The
counseling of anything else than one
law for all is vicious at all times and
in this particular instance doubly so
by reason of the fact that the attacks
of the Excuse are the outgrowth of
personal envy and hatred of Reeves
and not of love for the University
Club. _

In starting out to inquire into the
reasons for the high prices of food
products, the department of agricul
ture Is engaging in a good work. Sec
retary Wilson says the department
has agents in every county through
out the country, and they have been
directed to learn the cost of produc
tion of the principal food articles,
and the prices which the farmers re
ceive for them, and when the figures
are obtained they will be promptly
published. “We intend to bring out
the truth,” he declares, "regardless
of whom it hurts or benefits. I am
convinced that the public Is compell
ed to pay a great deal more for every
thing it eats than it should.”
The high cost of living is one of
the serious features of the situation
throughout the country. Not only
are nearly ail articles of food higher
than ever before, but clothing and al
most every other necessity has reach
ed figures never touched in the past.

tors may be a me to get at the reason j
for the high prices for the things!
which we eat and may thus give a
chance to bring them down to the t
level of a few years ago. if It should ,
turn out that somebody is getting
inordinate profits at present. This
is a matter in which nine-tenths of!
the 90,000,000 people of thfe country j
have a large interest.
That the tariff is not responsible ,
for the high prices is plain. The ad
vance affects the things that are not
on the customs schedules as well as
those which are upon them. More
over, the advance is world wide. Nor
I can the trusts, in all cases, be held
accountable. In some instances, how
ever, they are probably to blame. Sec
retary Wilson attributes the advance
in meat prices to the beef trust, and
he may be correct. Many of the cat
tle raisers have said that they sell
their products for only a trifling ad
vance over a few years ago. If those
persons are right who say that the
supply of farm products is not keep
ing up with the demand, one cause
for the high prices is revealed. Per
haps, too, the increase in the gold
production in recent years may ac
count for some of the advance. The
results of the investigation by the
department of agriculture will be
awaited with interest by the country.

Governor Ansel, of South Carolina, is
hilled to make a speech at the con
ference of governors to be held in
Washington this month. If he de
livers a speech like the one he made
to the convicts iu the Columbia pen
itentiary a few weeks ago he will
make a tremendous hit. On that
occasion the governor had his wires
crossed in the beginning and started
something like this:
My friends; 1 am glad to be with
you today and I am glad to see you
here.”
