Also he is a sore tnorn in the side of the Democratic gang and graft associa tion in this country. Which explains current attacks upon him in certain quarters. There are always two sides, and we shall wait to hear from Mr. Miles. Meantime the “make haste slowly” motto seems to have been lost sight of, as all convenient bits of buncombe generally are. At the annual meeting of stock “**— , swift & Co., the financial report submiuoa obnwed that the gross business in the fiscal year end ed September 30, i»oo, wa8 j„ ex cess of $250,000,000, or in the neighborhood of $10,000,000 more than the previous year, and about the same as in 1907. The figures indicate earnings on the greater amount of stock of about to,do pc* *.»***, -- pared with slightly more than 15 per cent in the previous year and with 12.60 per cent in 1907. All of which tells a good story for the Swift Co., as well as of the improvement that has come about in the country. The law provides that to the as sessors of the various counties, in the discretion of the majority, may be left the fixing ot valuation as aiTect fng their immediate districts. Thus the assessor in earn county will, by the ruling of the present state gath ering, fix the rate in his county on hogs. Several other exceptions have been made, including the assessment upon telegraph and telephone mile age in each county, ine latter step having been taken to knock out a graft game in which It appears that a considerable combine of worthies were engaged. Secretary Knox suggested to the powers interested in the Manchurian railway situation a plan contemplat ing the neutralization of those rail-1 roads by their sale to China, the I transaction to be financed by an In ternational syndicate. If Mr. Knox's plan is carried into effect as now seems probable, the result will be to take Manchurian railways out of ori ental politics and place them under economic and Impartial administra tion. The ownership of the railways will be vested In the Chinese govern ment, the funds for the purpose to be loaned to China by the bankers of those countries which are pledged to maintain the open door. HERE'S A HARD RAP. A merchant was disgusted because | bo many of the fam»eis were buying of mail o'Sei- houses, and one old • auener being cornered the other day was asked about it. The rancher told the merchant that he could do better by buying of the catalogue houses. He then asked the farmer for his order b'ank and did a’ little figuring on it. “Why,” he exdamed at last, "1 i could have saved you a dollar and j six bits on the bill, delivered at your' kitchen and done It right away.” ‘ Well,” said the rancher, as much disgruntled as the merchant, “why in heck didn't you say co before? 1 never see any of the goods advertis ed, how am I to know. The mall order people send me a catalogue and tell me how the goods look and how much they cost, and some of them look good to me. Why don’t you do the same?’ That was a hard rap. We wonder how many merchants are losing money as well as business because they do not go after it?—Ex. He lives in fame that dies in vir tue’s cause.—Shakespeare. MINES AND MINING KILLED IN MILL -WARNING Ml WAS FAILURE Demetrius Terris, a Greek, 24 years old, was killed yesterday morn ing about 7 o’clock by being crushed beneath a carload of ore while work ing on the ’’Grizzlies” of bin No. 2 of the concentrator at McGill. Tom Lontos, another Greek, of the same age, who was working with Terzis at the time, narrowly escaped the same fate. As it was, he was slightly cov ered up by the falling rock but sus tained no serious injury. Coroner A. J. Cartwright went to McGill immediately upon receipt of the news of the fatal accident and impaneled a jury to make an Investi gation, which resulted in the return of a verdict to tne effect that Terzis came to his death through his own carelessness, evidence having been introduced showing that a warning was given before theore. ' ed from th«a<ftrg phn„pB j B Grif_ flths, Bert. Caples, Jerry Hogan, L. M. Smith and James Ragan. Comment on the case was consider able around McGill yesterday, the Jury verdict not being accepted as fully covering the case. Warning, it is pointed out, was evidently not heard or understood by the men un der the car, else they would have got out of the way. TO HORK FOR OIL. Washoe ( onipany Will Soon Start Active Operations. The oil excitement in Humboldt county is not merely of speculative interest, but will be followed by a campaign of actual development work by men familiar with oil ex ploration, backed by ample capital, was demonstrated yesterday when it w'as announced that expensive ma chinery has been purchased for drill ing in the Black Rock desert ( says the Reno Journal: The Sitting Hull Oil company, in corporated five days ago in Washoe county, has already purchased ap proximately *lu,000 worth of ma chinery, including engine, boiler, rigging outfit, cable Ashing tools, casing and even a hanging crane for sharpening the drll. bits. “The machinery purchased is de signed to drill 3,000 feet if necessary and it has been planned to use 12 inch casing from the start. “Oil is expected to be encountered at a depth of 350 feet, that being the depth at which the first indications were found. “Many other companies are being formed to exploit the oil Helds be lieved to lie In this vicinity and a season of active development work is believed to be at hand.” NEVADA TELEGRAPH BRIEFS.
