who knows, and who a little later
will engage in business here, which
speaks for itself:

also your comments on same • issued

your stand is well taken. This com
plaining merchant, in my judgement,
has made a very poor and bad argu
ment. it is certainly not one which
will meet with the approval of an
intelligent trading public. “Big ad
vertising and loud talk won t do
any business without “VALl ES. In
my experience of twenty odd years,
in merchandising. I found that a
vast majority of the people are of the
"SHOW ME KIND,” and want what
they call for, and if the price is right
will bur. The merchants of Ely

THEY DON'T take the proper
method of exploiting these facts.

per, telling the public that he is sell
ing bran new goods, at lower prices
than odd shoddy stuff is being offered

calamity howling about newspapers

SIDERS. is rot. Newspapers derive
their existence from their ads, and
it is up to the home merchant to
support them, if they want live papers
• and the News, is certainly a live
■wire, i My advice to this merchant,
would be t o advertise, and then ad
vertise some more. John Wanna
maker says “it pays to advertise.”;
Merchants who don't use newspaper
space, open the door for “Mail order
houses” and they hure more than
“fake spec ial sales.” And also sell
shoddier goods than the rankest
bankrupt stock ever thrown on a
community. I contend that the man
who through advertising sells off a
bad lot of goods, is a better business
man than the one who has a good
stock of merchandise and don't forc
ibly tell the people about it. Don't
let your light shine under a barrel,
brother.

DECLINE KEEPS
ITS GRIP ON
THE MARKET
DECLINE.
No, little one. no soothing hand
at retched out yesterday to smooth
the aching market brow. Nobody
had visions of bubble water and
Paris gowns except the cute little
bear people, who kept on hammering
and shorting. Of course these short
ing days bring a reckoning and when
they have to buy it is an up day for
the market. The bears have had lots
of good sounding material to work
| with from Washington and are still
pressing it. Maybe it w-ill be over
done and the President be obliged to
issue a message that will halt the
1 untruthful reports. Meantime it looks
as if it would be down, down, down
! for quite a little period yet. Some
of them steadied a triflle yesterday
! but there was no air of permanency
about it. The entire list looks like
i a bargain, but it has looked that way
' every day for three weeks, and the
■next day it has been a breezier bar
gainy bargain than ever before. Ho*
I ever, if you have loose cash that you
would like to have get the growing
habit, it is certainly a good time to
; BUY stocks: don't margin them.

Additional declines were the order
of yesterday's stock market and there
' a as little of a redeeming feture about
it except for those who have been
I sitting by with a smile in readiness
1 to “grab the good ones as soon as
they hit bottom. ' That the bottom
has about been reached, however, is
the prevalent opinion among traders
and further large declines are not I
anticipated. The market has, in the!
opinion of market authorities, mere
ly been righting itself in preparation
for a sure upward movement which
j can scarcely be prevented. Ely Cen-1
tral was taken on in the district yes- |
ter day, those buying it having im-|
plicit faith in their ability to reap!
good profits. Ray Central also reach
ed a surprisingly low mark and prov
ed an attractive buy to many. Giroux
and Nevada Con., believed to have
reached their lowest levels, were also j
strong bidders for local favor and
considerable of both was bought. i
Colorado and Iron Blossom were i
again exceedingly strong and display
ed their usual defiant attitude. Trad- i
ing on the Salt Lake Exchange was
extremely light, however, but bet- i
ter things are predicted there by thei
Salt Lake mining writers. Summing
up the rather delicate market situa
tion of the past three weeks, it is safe
to say that the righting of the mar
ket has been about completed and |
there is no need for apprehension as
conditions for a general upward
movement all along the line were |
never more promising. Opportune <
