Splendid little gains, notwithstand ing the short half-day, gave the east ern market an encouraging aspect with which traders were enabled to tide themselves over the Sunday on the expectation of something better for tomorrow. All of the big eastern Issues held splenc Idly and closed stronger than for many a day. Salt I.akers again enjoyed a holiday but It is highly likely that. It Is known as the April Pool, and when ever the owners, August Dietlaf and his four sons, needs a little money they draw' upon the mine. Herman Deitlaf, one of the sons, came in yesterday to purchase sup plies with which he will leave today. He states that recently work was re sumed in the mine. The old tunnel was extended to about 200 feet, mak ing connection with the 800 foot shaft. The shaft and tunnel are both on the same vein and in ore that runs around $100 a ton. It is claimed that the ledge has an average width of 8 feet and lies be tween gray lime and quartzite. A re markable feature of the operations at the property is that not a single shot has ever been used in develop ment work or in the extraction of ore. It is a straight picking propo sition. the ore being a heavy oxidized talc that is easily crumbled. The FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF ELY Oldest and Largest Bank in Eastern Nevada W. V. IGUIN-THOIPSON GET ANOTHER OF Mining property in the Superior district, Arizona, which gives promise of developing into one of the coun try's very rich copper-silver-gold pro ducers, has been taken over by the Gunn-Thompson interests. The deal having been closed by Fred A. Flindt upon his recent visit to the southern i country. The purchase includes 200 ' acres of patented ground, about two | miles south of the famous Silver! King mine, which has produced a | great deal of rich gold ore. The j Gunn Thompson acquisition was worked in the early days as a silver j mine, says the Salt Lake Tribune. In the property, cuttting the en-! tire formation, is a fissure 35 and j 40 feet wide tilled with mineralized , porphyry in which excessive leach ing is in evidence. The old work ings comprise a shaft $4.00 feet deep, with four levels opened for some distance on the fissure. Consider able rich carbonate ore was taken | from the upper levels, but the ma terial is all leached to the 300-foot level. Upon that level streaks of en riched stufT were encountered which at 400 feet have developed Into con- j siderable bodies of chalcoeite. The property was worked about three years ago by leasers, who ship ped front the lowest level fourteen carloads of ore, the general run of which was about 28 per cent cop per, 100 ounces silver and $7 gold to the ton. The last carload sent | out by them gave values of 52 per ; cent copper, 262 ounces silver and ! about $15 gold. This was solid j chalcoeite, in appearance identical with the ore taken from the Guggen heints’ Bonanza mine in Alaska. | Work of the leasers was stopped by | a strong flow of water coming into i the workings. Mr. Flindt started a force of men ! at work unwatering the mine and! cleaning out the old workings. James Neary, well known minim; man of Montana, has been placed in charge of the property as superinten dent, with F. S. Smith engineer and j assistant superintendent. It is the! intention to at once sink the shaft, 200 feet deeper, to cut the iimo quartzite contact and to penetrate the sulphide zone. That work accomplished will pretty well determine the value cf the mine. All indications point to the entire great fissure being en riched in the sulphide zone. The geological conditions, Mr. Flindt de clares, could hardly be more neatly perfect for the making of large bodies of high grade ore at depth. property has been owned by the Diet laf family for several years but has on'y been worked occasionally. To use the words of August Deitlaf: “It is a dandy proposition,'' MINING CO. TRANSFER. Amalgamated Nevada Mines People liid in Their Property for Organisation. The various properties of the! Amalgamated Nevada Mine & Power j Co., located in Osceola and Black horse districts, were sold at auction | yesterday afternoon at the coutt house by Deputy Sheriff Jake Ful-! iner, on decree of foreclosure from ; the District court in favor of the] Amalgamated Nevada Mines Co., j composed largely of the stockholders • of the former company, and a coterie Of Boston capitalists. The property brought $1,000, bid by A. Walker, representing the plaintiff company. The Judgment was for $102,730.99, Prior to the sale, E. B. Robison and J. A. Lundgren tiled protest against the sale of the water of Shingle Creek, included in the list of the properties of the defendant company, notifying all persons that they are the owners of 5 cubic feet per second of the water of the stream by actual appropriation. Mr. Lund gren filed a like protest against the sale of Willard Creek, claiming own | ership of the entire flow of the stream by actual appropriation. ON THK COMSTOCK. Development work at the Coin stock Phoenix mine on Brunswick lode is going ahead steadily and the rich ore encountered at points near the surface is being opened up with depth. The contractors are making good progress in sinking the second hundred feet of their contract and i values are holding out all the way ' down. The winze has now reached a depth of nearly 400 feet and the [ i bottom shows good milling values. The company has a large amount of I 'milling ore on the dump and It will he hauled to the Butters plant as I rapidly as the ore teams can handle j It. B is expected that within a few ] months a contract will be let for the i construction of a reduction plan either at the mine or close by. A new j vein has been encountered in the east; drift on the tunnel level which shows j high milling values. The mine is due Cast of the lease on Best—Belcher ground in which such rich ore was uncovered last week and this fact gives both places a peculiar position, as the ore in both cases was struck in entirely virgin ground and the ex tent of the already large ore bodies can be ascertained only by more depth. On the Comstock Phoenix ore has been discovered at all points of the mine and hign milling values I have been the result. GEORGE A.
