From a recent issue of the Eureka Sentinel is copied the following en couraging article, in which it is stated that the courageous people of that community are still "in the game”: While Eureka is just now ex periencing strenuous times, there is no truth in the exaggerated stories printed in p«ap*ers in the western pan of the state, that there is want and destitution prevailing here, and that price* of all provisions have reached prohibitory figures. A* far as the Sentinel is able to learn there is no want in the tamp, and with the exception of one fam ily, thus far no assistance has been seeded. With the exception of fioar there ktt ben materiel btww in the price of staple goods that have been short, and our merchants are now able to bring in from Pai:sade all that is necessary, although with the extra freight charges they will be forced to ask increased price*. Eureka has always been equal to emergencies in the past, and there is still filth left among our people to believe that these present condi tions will not exist long, and we hope to be able to handle the situation un til th.s time come* about. .% KNOCKER. From an exchange we clip a definition of a "knocker.” We have heard a lot about boosting from time to time, but perhaps the clearest way of getting i* it is to say that the man who is really a ' booster” is the man who travels a path in an absolutely different direction from that pur sued by the man whose case is cov ered in the following definition of a “knocker”: A knocker is a man who always opposes what other people do, just for the purpose of being on the oth er side, whether he is wrong or right, and in ninety-nine cases out of every hundred he is absolutely wrong His brains and tongue are used to tear down and to destroy, to hurt, annoy. As a matter of fact the situa*ion in Eureka shaft *s none changed from that indicated in the News yesterday morning, when it was said that the shaft bad passed through the rhyo lite. This is true and it is also true that as previously stated *hey are In the same crushed material which overlies the ore in Copper Flat pit and is between the rhyolite and the ore as shown in the pit workings This being true, the Eureka shaft outlook could hardly be better or more promising for the obtaining of ore under precisely the am* condi tions as prevail in Copper Flat pit and to equally large extent. But the Eureka shaft has not yet reached this ore. About 15 feet mor* of sinking in the Eureka shaft remains to be done before the depth will be reached at which the churn drill found the ore, and where it undoubtedly still awaits the cornice of the shaft. These 25 feet should be rounded out in the early part of the coming week, when the shaft will have completed the first big step in its work and will then be employed In carrying out the further steps which the conditions that are to be dealt with plainly show the way for. and injure, both in public and private life—the individual as well as the community. Who wants to be a knocker? — - ■■" CAXDIDACT OF JUIX.F MlKSH . The following from the Piocbe Record indicate* the hearty manner in which the candidacy of Judge i Massey for governor is being re ceived throughout the state, by both Democrats and Repubicans who see in the judge the ideal man for fill ing the executive chair: Judge W. A. Massey of Reno, at the solicitation of his many friends of all political faiths, has announced (his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor. While Judge Massey's decision was not entirely unexjjeetc-d by many of the voters in this part of the state, they feel much relieved now that the Judge has acquiesced in the urgent wishes of his friends, which they consider to be equivalent to his nomination and election next fall. Judge Massey is a man of sterling ability; be has a strong personality; is well known and popularly liked throughout the state and is in every way fitted to make Nevada a big broad-guaged governor. He is unquestionably the strong est man that the Republican party ! can put forward for the office of i governor of this state and with such i a man as be on tbe ticket makes doubly certain the return of George! S. Nixon to the United States senate. | WISH AND UTHKKW1SK. The hearts of men are their books, j events are their tutors, great actions | are their eloquence.—Macaulay.
