MARKETS, METALS AND MINING
CAUSE SLUMP
I
Startling reports of damage done
crops by storms over a large western
area, with attendant prospect of
heavy loss to railroads In summer
and fall traffic, were circulated on
the eastern markets yesterday and
drove all stocks down. Demoralized
telegraph service In the storm area
prevented accurate Information be
ing obtained as to crop damage, and i
reports today may be of such char
acter as to enable prompt recovery
from yesterday’s losses. Otherwise
lower levels will be witnessed. A
better time never afforded for stock
investments, but it Is a bad one for
margins. The good news from Ely
Central mine probably saved it from
going to half a dollar in the general
landslide yesterday. Reports front
New York indicate that the backers
of the stock are proceeding conser
vatively and waiting for results at j
the mine before yelli.ig. A Derrick
& Kerin advice front New York at
tributes Hay Central decline to 30,- i
000 shares or stock hanging over
the market, but at the low figure j
made yesterday the stock certainly i
looks like a prime buy.

Another one of those sad and pal
lid markets greeted the traders yes
terday and to say that it brought
many doleful facet Is putting It mild
ly. There was not a redeeming feat
ure on the wohle board, not even In
Ely Central. The latter did not re
spond as was anticipated, showing |
plainly that not even the discovery 1
of a ledge of $20 gold-pieces could |
cause a stock to make an upward
movement during this period. Ely
Central again hovered around the
dollar mark, going first beneath and
then above that figure. That was the 1
extent of It, however, and needless
to say, disappointments resulted. The
market generally was again much
shot to pieces with no immediate sign
or reason for improvement. Our dally ^

Ely Central shaft yesterday pass
ed through the carbonates and en
tered the primary sulphid.es, thus
making demonstration of the correct
ness of the second link In the theory
which has been advanced as to the
manner of deposition of the ore
sought by the Eureka shaft on the
east of Copper Elat pit.
The ore encountered yesterday un
der the carbonates corresponds with
that in Copper Flat pit, but is not the I
commercial grade for hoisting pur- I
poses that the Ely Central manage
ment feels confident will be found
when the Copper Flat pit fault is
gone through and the basin entered. j
To reach the ore body Ely Cen- I
tral management is counting on. an
Incline shaft is now being run along
the rich carbonates which came in on
Saturday below the 400 In the shaft,
while the shaft Is sinking through
the primary sulphides to the level
from which they will send a drift
out through the fault, connecting
with the incline shaft and continuing
on.
To date the management of the
property has the satisfaction of
knowing that every occurrence met
with In the shaft is in precise con
formity with the deductions made by
Engineer Herzig, a fact that gives
ground for the confidence which is
entertained that the concluding the
ories which he has advanced will also
be fulfilled.
