Finhtlig For Vvada Wo are hi receipt of tho folfowing letter from the Reno Commercial Club with tho request that it be uhlished: RENO COMMERCIAL CLUB. Rkn-o, Nevada. Nov. '>7, 100*. Gkn*tl.kmkn: For many years the growth and pros jierity of the State of Nevada, and that portion of California east of the Sierra range, have been retarded and hehl back, and tho cost of living made un necessarily high by the unjust, exces sive and discriminative rates of freight charged to all parts of the state; not only on the necessaries of life but on everything that tends to the making and npbuilding uf the state. All efforts to have the freight rates to the state reduced so as to |M'rmit its people to prosjier and the different com munities within the state to grow have so far lieen ignored, and to use the ex pression published in one of the leading California daily papers, said to have emanated from the San Francisco Merchants Exchange, "While we admit that Nevada is charged exorbitant and unjust rates of freight, yet. we have the state by the throat, with a wtrangle hold, and do not projwse to release that hold." Home months ago the citizens of Keno, backed by the Commercial Club, peti tioned the State Railroad Commission of Nevada to present the case of tho people of Nevada to the Inter-State Commerce Commission at Washington, in consequence of which the State Hail road Commission, on behalf, of the citizens, tiled complaint with the Inter state Commerce Commission, against the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and allied lines, asking tho Inter-State Commission to -grant a hearing looking to the fair and equitable adjustment of of freight rates to this state. The Inter-State Commerce Commis sion has acknowledged the petition and wiil give a hearing in the near future, the exact date of which has not been settled. Tho State Railroad Commission of Nevada, assisted bv a corps of able rate .Uien have !>een working hard for some tiino past Tabulating these different rates and making comparisons, so as to present a strong case when tho hearing is held. WHAT WE ASK is: To Ik; placed 011 the same basis as other states, Mich as Utah. Idaho, Montana and Washington, all of which have inter mediate terminal points within tho state, and in consequence of which, they have grown and prosjiered and their resources have been developed. WE HAVE ALLIED AGAINST US powerful interests. Not only the railroad itself, but the various Cali fornia Boards of Trade and Wholesale interests who do not wish to see Nevada freo herself and liecoino an independent state, and have declared that they will s|>ond any amount necessary to defeat tho ]>otition for 1 letter rates for the state. As it will take a large sum of money to pay for exjiert witnesses and assist ants employed in the working np and proper presentation of this case, and as tho State Commission of Nevada has not tho funds at their disposal to defray these expenses it falls upon tho citizens of Nevada to donate the necessary means to carry oh this fight. As this is a fight in the interests of no partic ular business or community, but in tho interest of the entire state, we rcsjiect fully urge that each business club, merchant and business man in every* community raiso such subscriptions as they can and forward to the Kono Com morcial Club, Reno, Nevada, at tho earliest possible time. Any suliscrip tions received will lie acknowledged. As the time is short in whiclii to raiso tlio necessary funds to carry on tho work of this case to present when the commission gives tho hearing, wo urge that you give this matter earnest and prompt attention. As this is a matter that vitally con cerns every shipper and every consumer of goods within tho confines of this state. It is a matter of concern as much to tho tailoring man. who pays an exorbitant price for every tool he uses and every pound of food consumed by himself and his family, as it is to the man of wealth, who finds himsHf hardened with excessive ex|ioiise in carrying on the volume of business that his capital makes possible. Tho case is known as No. UM5 on tho files of the Inter State Commerce Com mission, and has Iwon assigned to Com missioner Cock roll for hearintr. Every effort thai can lie made by tho itato Railroad Commission will be made o properly pTpare and present this case. Wo have an exceedingly strong case. Uid with the moral and financial -ssislanco we feel assured Hie eifiz.-ns of tho state will give, wo have every oason to lieliovo we will win and (?euro sulistantlal relief thai will bno lit ALL. Hold by Elko Drug Co. . hiiadfiphlans Excited All Philadelphia is "in un inward ferment these iluys following the revela tions made by the state dairy and food Commission in regard to the use ?>f rotten eggs in the manufacture of bakery products. Staid citizens now hold one hand on "tnmuiy" and the | other over the noso when iKissitig a hake shop. Even Father Penn. on the lofty jieivli, wears a look of pain and disgust. According to the investigators, the business of supplying rotten eggs to bakesliops is so extensive that there are more than twenty dealers engaged in the disgusting trade. Thousands of dozens' of "rots" and "spots," the re fuse of the big storage warehouses and wholesale egg dealers, are sold weekly to be converted into food for the public. The commissioner's sjiecial agent has collected evidence to show that decayed eggs, known to the trade as "s[>ots and "rots." are used in making pies and cakes of all kinds, in Icing that is put upon fancy eakes and meringues and in coating bread to make it glossy. Cheap ice cream and ice cream cones, the v? called cream that goes into cream puffs and eclairs are also made with the decayed material. A coterie of dealers, most of whom live in South Philadelphia, are the middlemen in the nauseating and healthwrecking transactions. These men buy eggs that are rejected by the big packing houses, the Water street commission stores, anil tin? companies that run chains of retail stores. In turn, the coterie sells to bakeries and to some restaurants. The stuffs, with the poison of putre faction unchanged by the cooking, is then made into the products enumerated And placed for sale in bakeries, grocery stores and other places. But the eggs in the shell make only a small portion of the business. The bulk of the decayed output is sold soon nfter they have been opened, in great liailsto the bakeries. There is a daily lei i very to these establishments of :IU0 pound cans and, invariably, it is before ? o'clock in the morning. The stuff in the cans has also been uiulyzcd ltv Professor La Wall and Itronuuced poisonously putrefaetivc and mtit for food. The bakeries pay an Average of 1*2 cents a pound for it. One pound is alxiut equivalent to a dozen 'gg* Nor is this all. Quantities of the ilecayed eggs are dried and sold in barrels. The mass in which are in cluded l>oth white and yolks brings as liigh as ."iO cents a pound, delivered to the bakeries. This com|Kmml is mixed with a gallon of warm water to the pound, and soaked twelve hours before lieing used in pastries and is used by I he bakers as the equivalent of seven dozen eggs. This brings the cost per dozen down to eight cents a pound. This dried ma terial is subjected to the same process before use and its ultimate cost is ulxmt the same as the dried whole egg. Another process to which the "spots" and "rots" are subjected is freezing. The whites and yolks are mixed an 1 the mass placed in cold storage in a tem perature that m ikes it hard and odor less. It is sold in cans to bakers at the rate of 10 cents a pound. Josephine Dcllry Co. (rOMMUNIOATKIl) The Josphino Deffrv Company closes its week engagement in Elko tonight. It has been a pleasant one to the people of Elko. The unanimous opinion is it was by far the best company that has appeared in Elko. The lesson taught by the moral plays produced by this company made those who attended the theatre better for it. The individual work of the members of this company was praiseworthy in all respects. Mr. Hawkins the capable and pleas int man ager is a veteran in the business as was shown by his quiet, re lined comedy work. Mr. Aleine. the leading man. in all his work shows linish and apprecia tion in the art of ueting. Miss (I race Hamilton in ingenue work was chic ami charming. The character work of Miss Asliton in her many different parts shows that this lady is capable and suited to this class of work. She was excellent throughout. Of the star nothing more can be said than was I staled a few days ago. The tears] brought to the eyes evidence her high ability in emotional roles. Her acting goes right to (he heart and makes one feel better after the lear has fallen. Wo said before Josephine D.'ffry came here a stranger. She and Iter company have won a home with the people of Elko.
