THERE'S something about it that "gits you," That lures with a call that is strong; There's something about it that hits you. That beckons and draws you along. The skies are a little bit bluer. The air has a tang of its own. And friends are a little bit truer In the land where the sagebrush is grown. There's something about* it alluring. That holds you as It by a spell; Its glories axe ever-enduring, Its beauties no land can excel. The love for Its plains never changes, The charm of its canyons enthrals. There's something about its wide ranges That grips you and beckons and calls! Its mountains and hills captivate you. You look on its streams with dclignt; Its deserts, somehow, fascinaU* you. You love those gray stretches by night! Its desolate wastes weave about you Aapell which you can't understand; You'll whisper, "I'm lonely without you! I want you, my dear desert land!" You may boast of the countries whose glories You've seen in your journeys abroad; You may tell me some wonderful stories. And Europe's attractions may laud. But never a cocntry will "git you," And all your attention engage, Whote charms and attrac.lons will hit you Like the land of the grersewood and sage! ? E. A. Brininstool. THE HOUSEWIFE AND HER BREAD. THE high cost of flour and advance in price of bread in many places has started some discussion in the women's clubs and the homes as to whether women today should make their own bread or not. To many of the' older housewives, buying it from the baker or the grocer seems rather shiftier. In their industrious creed and practice the bread bo'sr' and the kneading trough lay at the foundation ol sood housekeeping. A bride who could not manipulate the rolling pin should never have been married. Many of the domestic economists of the present day believe that home bread making is fast going the way of the home curing of meatd or grinding meal, which scarcely exist today. As they look at it, the food manufacturer saves enough by buying materials in large quantities to mako up for the cost of the labor, so that the housewife gets little or perhaps nothing whatever for her laborious hours in the pantry. The old style baker often thought first of the number of loaves he could produco out of a barrel of flour. The baker's bread one use thus often had a certain spongy and elastic Quality. It seemed as if the material had been expanded in some way, to make it seem light, and glv- | ing an erroneous impression of the extent of its food value. Good home-made bread never- conveyed this impression, and ha.; a j certain Armness that gives a pleasant feeling of substantial quality. The greatly increased sale of bread prepared outside of the home must have been due to a realization by food producers, that they must please the public by a good eating quality. The old time home made bread, with good butter, was very appetizing. A hungry boy would eat It ravenously, asking no sauces to make it more toothsome. During recent years bakers have been learning from the arts of the old time housewife, and perhaps bettering her. A good business is the result. If the producer makes it clear that hlB methods are strictly clean, he will find all the trade he wants. PURIFYING LAW'S LANGUAGE. AMEASURE has been introduced in the Illinois legislature which has for its purpose the simplification of the language of indictments. In other wordB, It proposes to purge such documents of their hopelessly obsolete legal verbiage. As the Chicago Tribune says: "if a man commits murder the in dictment under tne proposed bill will charge murder. A thief will be charged with burglary." This measure which was prepared in Chicago has been approved by eminent lawyers and criminologists in all parts of the country. It is a step toward the simplification of legal processes. "THE Elko Independent" offers space In Its columns for a free discus sion of matters of community interest and Invites contributions. Too many people in every community are addicted to street gossip and dealing in unfounded reports. An open discussion of public matters in the newspapers has a tendency to confine the individual to facts and not hearsay, and brings people generally to a better understanding of the things that affect the community. To this end this paper offers Its columns for expression of opinion and wants to see thoso who have opinions on public matters give them expression through its columns. How is It that the eephyrs of March are always able to wait until there Is a good number of peop* looking on before they proceed to blow a man's hat off into the middle of the street. DISCIPLINE seems to bo pretty poor in the schools, as a boy can make the most inexcusable error on the ball team, and yet not havo to stay after school and get an extra lesson. READING the newspaper in their comfortable easy chairs, many men wonder why the soldiers in the cold trencheB with the bullets flying around them don't get out and do something. WHY oomplaln that times are hard, when you forget to ask for the Congressional Record, the fat copies of which yield a sizable return from the Junk manT AUTOMOBILES seem to be selling freely, while the necessaries of life drag a little. The difference is that automobile dealers almost always advertise. AFTER taking around a United States protest to the warring pow ers, the American ambassadors know about how a spring poet feels when he takes his verses to the newspaper office. IF a man would take the estimate of expenses he makes when de ciding about buying an automobile, his wife would get a new parlor carpet this spring. ALTHOUGH It is very humllntlng not to have tho new wide skirts of the spring styles, this Is not sufficient reason for a girl ?o absent her ?eU from ohorch on Easter Sunday. THV high price of flour has led many newspapers to publish articles Wglnc women to make their own broad, but not many husbands hnve said anything about it. TBI president can't go to San Francisco, but probably a good many paopla will sand him post cards of the exposition. AT the army posts they are now preparing for war by trimming tho hydrangea bushes and the rambler ro?e>. > i TUMI DIES BY OWN HAND "Nothing doing, good bye." With 1 tbeso words Will C. Harding, known throughout the southern country as "Red," hung up the receiver of his telephone, placed the muzzle of a pistol in his mouth and leaped Into eternity. For several days past "Red" had been brooding over his financial af fairs and the illness of his wife. He neither ate nor slept, but was to be seen on the streets and in public places at all hours after attending to his business affairs. He went to his house on upper Main street this morning about 8:30 and called up a close friend, Frank Cavanaugn, the undertaker. This is almost verbatim the conversation that ensued: "Frank, listen now. I want you to do something for me." Mr. Cav anaugh says that he judged from the tone that "Red*' had been drinking and lie replied: "All right, let her go." "I want you to take care of my wife." "What's the matter with ypu, 'Red' 7" "That's aU right, it goes. Within a minute it will be all over." "What's the matter?" "I'm in the hole and I can't get out." "Hold on, 111 be right over." "Be for you get here I'll be gone. Noth ing doing; goodbye. When I hang up the /receiver, bang." Mr. Cavanaugh, after vainly at tempting to have Harding reconsider his attempt to commit suicide, tele phoned immediately to Chief of Po lice Evans. The two met less than three minutes later and ran at the top of their speed to the Harding house. They opened the front door of his home and entered. Chief Evans smelied powder smoke and said: "Frank, it's all off." In the sitting room, which was darkened by the curtains being drawn, beside the telephone they found "Red" all | crumpled in a heap. His pulse had J ceased to beat, but blood \vas still pouring from his mouth and nostrils, j The pistol, a 32-20 Colt, was found on a chair, the weapon evidently dropping from his hand as iie fell | to the tioor. Medical attention was | summoned, but life was found to be I extinct. Harding had been a resident I of Tonopah since 19U2 and was well i known all over the state. ? Bonanza.
