AT SPARKS DEPOT Governor Boyle has taken up with the proper Southern 1'aciQc railway authorities the proposition of secur- ] ing in the depot building at Sparks space for all or part of the mining ! and agricultural exhibits now on ! view at the San Francisco exposition. It is a move worthy of commenda- ! tiond and in his efforts the governor should receive hearty support through- ! out the state. The Nevada mining exhibit at the big fair is far above the average and in addition to having won all the , chief prizes in competition is attract- 1 ing a great deal of attention. If it can be retained in whole and placed on exhibition at Sparks it wil catch ( the eye of nearly all travelers pass- ! ing through Nevada over the South ern Pacific. | The agricultural exhibit at the lair is farily representative of the cereal t and fruit resources of the state and with additions made to it after being placed at Sparks it is bound to draw the attention of people who are com- ( ing west to locate. Governor Boyle's idea in selecting Sparks as the point of vantage in dis- 1 playing Nevada's mineral and agri- j cultural products is because of the | fact that all trains passing over the ! Southern Pacific stop at the division twenty or more minutes and (lock- 1 ing about the depot passengers can j not fail to have their attention drawn] to the exhibits, especially if they are | set out in an attractive manner. There should also be a man there, at all times, and employed by the state to give information to all visitors and ! inquirers. The governor's move is a 1 good one and if it is supported in ! the spirit in which it should be much ; good is bound to come of it. ? Appeal.; MAYRR HOTEL ARRIVALS I. Griswold, Deeth; II. B. First publication Oct. 4, 1915. i ALASM HOLDS GREAT WONDERS Ever since the Grant administra tion paid Russia the barga in-counter price of $7,200,000 for that "frigid waste as some 01 me newspapers called Alaska, we have been finding out through successive discoveries that, instead of a frozen wilderness, the United States bought the most valuable corner lot in the layout of the whole world. Never a cummer gets by that some enthusiastic inves tigator does not come down from a research trip into the wilds or our big Arctic territory and raise the limit on the boom talk about this cor ner lot. In a recent issue of Leslie's Week ly is a tourists' tale calculated more than ever to make seeing Alaska the fashion fad of the American globe trotter, lie tells us that in its scenic displays Alaska is a combination of the Thousand Island region or the St. l-awrence, the most picturesque parts of the Alps, tile lords of Nor way and the volcanic and glacial wonder; of Iceland. That is but a starter to the glowing description. In addition "it has the sweetest Ilowcrs, the most luxuriant vegetables, the finest grazing and timber lands, the richest fisheries and mineral deposits, a most healthrul climate with the warmth of the middle slates, In winter in southern and western Alaska." In the highest altitude the winter cli mate has a "dry, healing cold." After a while most of us will come to believe that at least hair that l,as been told about Alaska is true. It is difficult to get over that long fixed habit or thinking about this Arctic corner as a frozen wilderness. But ! with a $30,000, 000 railroad pushing' into the interior it will not be long' before the tourists, in ten-thousand lots, will be seeing ror tliemselveB. ? Baltimore American.
