The Thanksgiving season is a ^ood time for the American people lo make a practical and liberal application oi one of the first principles of Christian ity: "Freely ye have received: freely give." The outpouring of charitable offer ings from the American people last winter surpassed anything in our previous history. There were vast de mands on our hearts and purses, ow- , ing lo the dire need of Belgium and other parts of Europe and the pre valence of unemployment at home. And the nation in general was poor, or at least felt poor. Business was bad, ! incomes smaller than for many years. ; savings accounts were dwindling, the . future was rendered precarious by the great war. And yet in spite of busi- i ucss handicaps and the fear of per- | sonal want, our people gave millions upon millions, stinting themselves to j reliev the sufferings of those in worse j plight. This winter we are riding on a wave ? of prosperity. We are far better able to give than we were a year ago. And j tlhe need abroad is immensely greater. ? The danger is that our hearts | should be dulled by the very vastnessl of the misery in Belgium and Poland and Cnlicia and Serbia and elsewhere in the stricken war zone. Appeals lose their force because there are so | many of them, and it seems hopeless j to give where even the most liberal j giving must be inadequate. But the nation must give, and give j far more generously than before, in proportion to its greater ability. Thus we may come nearer to deserving the prosperity we enjoy, and take the edge off the bitterness with which the suf fering nations of Europe can't help regarding our good fortune. NATIONAL CONVENTION AT 'FRISCO. With the usual competition under way for bringing the big Republican and Democratic conventions next year to the various "ideal convention cities," San Francisco is making a perculiarly strong appeal. The Frisco exposition will soon be closed, and the exhibits removed. The buildings and grounds, however, will remain The city is now busy figur ing out appropriate uses for them. And it is patent to every San Fran ciscan, and to most of the population of the Pacific slope, not to mention a good many hundred thousand citi zens who live further east, that the scene of the Panama Pacific Exposi tion would be a fine place for the conventions.' I'erhaps San Francisco deserves something of the sort. She has given t In* country the most successful of nil world's fnirs, and created an architec- ] tural paradise whose beauty may nev er be surpassed, or even equalled. It might be a fitting recognition if the nation crowned her business and ar-j tistlc triumph by taking its biggest j con vent ion there. The buildings and landscapes and gorgeous lighting effects would still bo as magnificent as ever, and the facilities for doing the, convention work would doubtless he , adequate. There has never been a presiden tial convention so far west. If then1 i is ever to be one, this is the time. There might be certain difficulties or j expense in transmitting the conven tion news to the east front so great a distance, but such a consideration j need not weigh heavily. One act of the Nevada Tax Commis sion, at least, will have the commenda tion of the tax payer and that is i he extension of the date of dellnqut ney j from the statutory date lo December] 27. lilir.. Any ruler on ear Hi would be fiat- 1 tered by the honors p:iid the Inani mate Liberty Bell on Its ? rip to Call- j fornla and back. And anybody who] imagines that the American people are lacking In reverence for their own past has only to conshh r that triump hal tour to change his mind about It. It really seems superfluous for an> of the belligerents to begin a nev. "offensive" when the whole business Is so offensive. FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING "So they are embarking on the sea of matrimony?" "Yes" "I presume they carry a neutral linn?" "Oh, yes; but I suspect that part of the cargo Is contraband. " "Why so?"* "Evcrbody says the bridegroom has a lot of brass." o^r EVENEO THINGS UP Mrs. Wlggs ? Poor Mrs. Rounder! Her husband didn't leave her much when he died. Mrs. Dlggs ?
