TilE tabled btories of the countless hordes who crossed the Helespont with Xerxes aud Alexander Uave boon lar surpassed by the actual numbers ol ibe forces engaged in ilie present conilict. The h^urcs are certainly sturtliug. observes au exchange. In Europe, 78 per ceut ol ibe popula tion at war, in all llic world Ob pel ceut of the population involved in the comlict; 13,000,000 men actually under arms; 2,oot?,oou killed; nearly 4,000,000 wounded, more than 2,000, 000 prisoners. We cannot grasp these figures, but we can get some idea o? what they mean by comparing them with the results ol previous wars. We were accustomed to speak of out civil war as the greatest conllict oi modern times, but apparently it wa<. only one-tenth the magnitude of the present conllict. At no time did the number of met. actually under arms. North am. South, exceed 1,300,000 men. and tin total number of those killed in batik and died of wounds on the Northern side was llo,o?o, and on the Soul hen. side probably not more than 80,000 ; so that in tour years of war then the destruction of life was less than one tenth of the destruction of life dur ing a little more than one year at the present time. In the Napoleonic wars, from 179G to 1813, the largest army ever assembled was that which Napoleon led into Uussia in 1812, and this numbered somewhat in excess of 500,000. The German armies light ing today in Uussia on the east and in France on the west are more than six times as large. In a recent audress at West l'oint, ? referring to the war in the western theater, Gen. Vinton Greene said that the reports indicated that 2,500, t'00 on each side occupied the trench es from the sea to the Vosges, which meant 8,000 men to the mile or five to the yard, more than the equivalent of u double-rank formation, in close order, with elbows touching from end to end. "Compared to these," remarked General Greene, "the celebrated lines of Torrs Vedras in Portugal and ol Petersburg in Virginia sink utmost into insignificance. Imagine u con tinuous line in double rank across tue state of New York from the At lantic to Lake Outurio." General Greene then took up a dis cussion of the manner in which the armies are supplied with food and rations, and the use of the , motor truck. "It would seem," he said, "as if the internal combustion engine as applied to the automobile has almost revolu tionized that branch of the military science which has been called logis tlCB." WAR LOANS AND FARMERS. GOV. FEUGUSOfl of Texas, ad dressing the national association of life Insurance presidents, expressed alarm over the European war loans. He reminded his hearers that Ameri can financial interests are said to have loaned the nations of Europe a billion dollurs in the past year, and that an other billion will probably be loaned in the next twelve months. He sees 111 this a grave misfortune to the country. "Think!" he says. "This #2,000,000,000 would make a loan of |800 to every tenant farmer in the United States and would start hiin on the road to ownership." The money, instead ol going abroad ought to be kept at home and lent to the American farmer. The Texas governor's intentions are good, but he is obviously mistaken about the real situation. The "billion dollars" supposed to have been loaned to Europe don't represent money tak en out of the country. We have sent no mouoy to Europe. All the loans made have been "credit loans." They fullill a function !n international trade whereby the United Stutes extends its foreign customers longer credit than usual, and our financial institutions assume the responsibility of collect ing the accounts later on. Meanwhile these same llnancial In stitutions pay to the American pro ducer the hard cash represented by those loans. The American farmer, like the American manufacturer, act ually gels his money. And having more cash than he's had in a long time, as a result of two great and readily marketable crops, the former ? with the exception of the southern cot ton planter ? Is In better llnancial shape than usual. liesides, the farmers haven't much difficulty In borrowing money from the very Institutions whose representa tives the govern jr was addressing. For the life insurance companies of America, with nearly $5,000,000,000 of assets. Iinve already lent two-thirds of u billion dollars lo farmers, and hold today more farm mortgages then all the hanks In the country put together. It is highly desirable that there should be established a rural credit system whereby farmers eon borrow money slill more readily, and on easier terms. But as far as these war loans are concerned, it sliouid be recognized lliat tiiey have helped the farmer in stead of hurting him.
