THE UNION RECORD. Local and County Matters. AGENTS: THOS.norCE SAN francisco WM. H. TOBEY ?*a Fraacisco J. J. KNOWS.TON'. Jt Co Saa Fmadsco S. R. ROSENTHAL Marysville. D. P,SMITH Forbestown P. BOWLES .. Pine Creek J.C. NOONAN A Chico Competition’.— The Marysviik Appeal nav« : ‘•Great efforts are being made to take the La Porte passenger and freight trade to Oroville by the tarn pike road now building from that city to Wood ville. The survey of the road gives a maximum grade of six feet to the hundred, and a distance of 23 miles. The builders are now ont six miles from Oroville, and propose to finish their work early in the Spring. This is an enterprise for Oroville wor thy of imitation by ever}- city that wishes to keep and gain more country trade. The good road that brings the farmer's and teamster’s wagon and hordes into a city is worth as much to that city as any other enterprise that public spirited men en gage in. Marysville, wc are sorry to say, is aot much renowned for the excellence of her country roads; and perhaps a little stirring up is needed to keep and increase the trade that does so much to build up our city. Any how, it is is a fair field of competition; and our neighbor city is invited to ‘go in and win'—if she can." Now or Never.—ln a few more days and jour chances of speculation will be gone. Geo. K. Smith is selling off his entire stock of wat ches, clocks, jewelry and fancy goods at New York wholesale prices. Young ladies and gents who wish to “sport” fine and valuable jewelry, at cost price, should not neglect to call immediately and procure a full supply. Farmers, miners or “any other man” should not loose this golden opportunity. California gold rings at cost. Table spoons and forks plated with silver at cost. “A few days,”— and you’ll have to pay the usual prices—its note or loose a bargain. Failed to Appear.—On Monday, the 14tb inst., the case of James Storrs, indicted for robbery, was called for trial, but the defendant, who is under bail in the sum of 52.000, failed to appear, and bis bond was declared forfeited by the Court. This is the last one of a party of five who robbed the stage near Bid well Bar in June last. The other four—namely, the three Gassaways and Shuler—are now paying the penalty of their crime in State’s Prison. A suit on the bond has been commenced by the District Attorney. Raix.—The “windows of heaven” were opened for a few hours. Tuesday forenoon, and the rain fell in considerable quantity for a short space of time. In the afternoon, however, the clouds rolled away, and left our •‘honest miners’without a “turn head. ' Those who prophesied an early winter were evidently not in tUc confidence of the “clerk of the weather."’ We believe farmers on Feather river have not, as yet, done much ploughing; but in the vicinity o_f Chico, we learn, ploughing com menced some time ago. and considerable ground has been broken up. Out of I.ri k A McClellanite of this place made a wager of a sack of Hour with a Union man of F.va*usville precinct that the State of New York would go for McClellan ; if not, he agreed to carry the sack of flour to Evansville, a distance of ten or twelve miles, making the trip barefoot. If Little Mac carried the State, then the Union man was to perform the above feet from Evansville to Oroville. We tire inclined to think, from The latest news, that the admirer of Little Mac will have to do that little job of “packing." He ought to have had better luck—or better judgment. Hops —The Colu.-a Sun says hops are beginning to be one of the mo.-t exteurive and profitable crops in the world, and that, where hops have been tried in California, they have generally done well. More attention should be paid to their culture. Owing to the increased consumption of beer and ale in the United States, the demand for hops has grown fa>ter than the increase of production, and there is now no crop which gives the producer belter returns. Acquitted. —After an examination of five day?, of witnesses, before Judge SuQord, J. I). Givens and othets, who had been held to bail tor the killing of Philip Farelly, were dischar ged. District Attorney Rosenbaum and Gen. Uowe, of Marysville were on the side of the prosecution, and F. M. Smith and James M. Burl for the defence. Notice — The Trustees ot Hamilton School District will be in session at the school house, in said district, on the 26. and 29th insts., for the purpose of equalizing the value of the assessed property in said district. All persons having business with said Board will please cal! and attend to the same. Per Order, John Beall, Clerk of Board. Robbery. Messrs. Miller A Brothers, butchers, of Crane Valley, in this county, had near seven hundred dollars buried in a yeast-powder can. close to their house in the valley ; but oa Saturday, olh in.rt.. they found that the money was gone. It was all in gold dust, as received from miners ia payment for moat. We understand that the Messrs. Miller offer SIOO reward for the recovery of the dust. Rev. It. W. Taylor. A M. of Sacramento county. Califotnia. Deputy Grand Worthy Chief Templar of the Grand Lodge of the Independent order of Good Templars, will preach in Oroville,in the Church, on Saturday and Sunday evenings, at T k, PI eve ila at 11 AM. All are respectfully Invited. Fink Grade Teamrters who have passed over the new grade of the Woodvillc road on Miner’s Ranch Hill, are enthusiastic in it> { raise. The old road over this hill was impassable for heavily loaded teams, but the new grade has done away with this formidable barrier to trade and travel. Tkt It.—lt is said that watering strawberries with water iu winch nitrate of soda has been dis‘ solved to the amount of one ounce of soda to a gal lon of water, will help the plants produce a won derful crop. Keep it before the people, that D. X. Fries lebcnaod Cheap John are the only dry goods merchants in Oroville that have dry goods to advertise. Tift re you can get bargains. Chico. — I.ast year this precinct gave STO to the Sanitary fund, and two Union majority. This year it gives SI3O for the Sanitary Fund and 139 Union majority. Early.—Farmers in Chico township have been plowing, extensively, the past two weeks. This section raised the best crop in the county the past season. Religiocs Notice.— Rev. J. M. Woodman will preach in the Brick e'hureh, oa to-morrow (Bah* bath), at 11 o'clock a. a. Now is tub time to make arrangements for set ting cut orchards. The sooner it is dene after the rains have wet the ground, the better. The proceedings of the Board of Supervi sors will appear next week Official Vote of Butte. The following is the total number of rotes cast for the different candidates, on Tuesday, November S, 1864: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS. Brannan, Union 1.737 McCallom, Union 1,739 Crane. Union 1,739 Maclay,Union 1.739 Oliver, Union 1.739 Doyle, Copperhead 1,116 Barber Copperhead 1,116 White, Copperhead 1.116 Hamilton, Copperhead 1,117 Lewis, Copperhead 1,116 FOR CONGRESS—THIRD DISTRICT Gen. John Bid well, Union 1,709 Jackson Temple, Copperhead■ 1,110 Bidwell's majority in Butte—s 99. SUPERVISOR—Ist DISTRICT. Timothy Fogg. Union 632 L. Burnham. Copperhead 393 Fogg’s majority—239. L. Clark, constable for Hamilton township, received 82 votes: Tbos. Brown. Copperhead, received 52—Union majority for Clark —30. Total number of votes cast in Butte, in the year 1.-63 was 3.355: in Sept. 1864, 2 856 which shows a failing off from the vote of last year of 532 votes. Gov. Low’s majority was 366; Lincoln’s majority is now 622 over McClellan. This shows large Union gains; and, judging from the past, it id fair to presume, that by approaching fall campaign, there will not be left a single Copperhead Democrat in Butte county. So mote it be.
