THE UNION RECORD. A GAME OF BEAG. On die railway which connects the two great commercial towns of, Lan cashire, many of the everyday passen gers are accu ; tcmed to while away the journey by playing cards together; they know one another, and make up their rubs beforehand, and even have certain carriages retained at either ter minus for their especial accommodation and diversion. Whist is, of course, the usual game among them, but with souse-cf the juniors that beautifully scientific game is voted dull and slow, and they play brag instead —a dis graceful taste, which is very properly reprobated by the rest, and stigmatized as “sheer gambling*’ even by those who pass their days in the stock exchange, and risk hundreds of thousands upon scrip and share. However, it so hap pened last July that I, a chance pas senger between Liverpool and .Man chester, with a return-ticket for the day, found myself in a first-class car riage occupied by five gentlemen plac ing at the redoubtable game; and, without Laving the least desire to join them, I watched their proceedings with some attention, and was rewarded bv witnessing what was admitted by all to be an unprecedented occurrence, and one well worthy, if not of immortal verse, at least a printed record. For the first twenty minutes, I should men tion, they played whist—of course with two packs of cards; but upon the re monstrance of the gentleman who found himself cat out and obliged them to make room for the fifth man at the railway rug, which was their card-ta ble, they changed the game to brag. While my moral nature was shocked, I could not Ledp being interested by the secretircness of each competitor, by the air of confidence with which they backed an indifferent hand, by the af fected hesitation which they continued to brag on a good one, and by their close scanning of one another’s coun tenances, in which nothing but cunning and avarice could he traced. And yet, in sense of playing for big stakes, they were not gambling. A sovereign or thirty shillings was the most that had been lost by any person, when, pres ently, they having thrown up their hands, two players began to back their cards at such considerably high sums as to arouse everybody’s curiosity to know what they were staking on. “Let me look at your hand, Jones,” cried one ; “I’m not playing, you know, and Smith will never be able to tell anything by my face.” “That’s true, ray dear fellow,” re plied Jones, coolly; “If want of ex pression could beget confidence, one could trust in your face as much as in any man’s. But I can’t let you sec my hand—Smith, I brag five thousand pounds.” “I brag' ton,*’ was the response; “and allow me to warn you as a friend not to back yourself extravagantly, for you 11 lose, my Jones—and you arc a family man!” Here took place a burst of laughter : this was a new ruse, indeed, to" affect interest in the state of an adversary's pocket, in order to make him give in' “Well,"’ replied Jones, “you're a bachelor, it is true, but you cannot af ford to lose twenty-five pounds, and that is the amount of my next brag.’’ “I brag twenty-five pounds also,” rejoined Smith, cheerfully. “Then 1 will brag fifty pounds,” re turned Jones ; ‘‘and sooner than go on I solemnly tell you, you should give me a hundred to look at my hand.” “I wouldn’t give a farthing to look at your hand ;” answered the other, scornfully ; “I am really sorrv to ruin you, hut your obstinacy brings it upon yourself. \ou will have to part w ith Mrs. Jones' piano as it is, I expect.” “Sir, replied Jones with resolution, “on the cards which 1 hold acre I would brag Mrs. Jones herself with the utmost confidence.” ‘‘You had better not 1” the bachelor responded darkly. And again there was a shriek of laughter from the audience, who were not permitted to spectators. “Now, my dear Smith, lot us under stand one another. If you continue to play this game, you will never ride in a first-class carriage again. I should be sorry to be the means of driving vou into the ‘parliamentary.’ Tell me how much money you can afford to lose without going to jail, and I will brag that .’’ “1 will brag two hundred and fifty pounds ; and you had better iri' c me a bill of sale upon your furniture at once. I am quite sure you haven’t got so’much in your banker's hands.” “I will brag five hundred,” replied Jones, with Lis teeth clenched. “I w ill brag my house and garden: 1 will brag myself ai d my government situation. If, instead of being in the express train we were in the middle ages, and you were the Old Gentlemen himself. I warn you that I would brag my soul!'-' “Then you would lose it,” retorted Smith, “to a dead certainty : and 1 should have made a very indifferent bargain. Now listen. Let the last brag of two hundred and fifty stand; and Robinson and Lloyd shall look at my hand, and Brown at yours. Then we will bo bound by their advice, and if they say to either of us. ‘Stop!’ we will do so.'’ “Very good,” quoth Jones, showing his cards with a grim smile to his left hand neighbor. I would have given anything to see them, too, but being a stranger I did not venture to do so. “Do you think, Brown. I ought to give in to Smith with a hand like this, or not r “It is quite impossible,” observed Brown, solemnly, “that any man should give up such cards. I think, under the circumstances. I am almost justified in saving that Smith cannot win." “Whatdoyoueav ?” inquired Smith, turning the face of his cards to his two friends with the most careful secresv, and watching for their reply with tri umphant confidence. “It’s absurd,” quoth Mr. Johnson ; ■‘you’re sure of winning.” “I would lay a thousand pounds upon such cards,” said Mr. Lloyd. ••Stop!” excla’med Jones; “I will brag a thousand pounds myself, an 1 what he can't pay I will let him off, af ter having sold his books t an l personal clothing. We are now getting close to Manchester. Let us each wrap up our cards in a newspaper and go into the station and get them sealed up; then we can call for them in the evening and brai all fLe way licmc. You mis erable Smith ! you set out this morning in competence; you will return a beg gar !” •‘You will, indeed !” corroborated Brown. “Unhappy Jones!” quoth Smith; certainly, ‘whom the god- wish to de stroy they first make mad.’ This morning you probably complained of the kidney being underdone at break fast ; to-morrow your wife and children will be in want of bread!” “They will, indeed!” echoed Messrs. Lloyd and Robinson. “Gentlemen,” said I, “it seems to me this matter will never be settled ex cept by arbitration. I have not the honor of the acquaintance of any of you; hut I am an honest man, and if both the players will show their cards to me, 1 will tell truly which ought to give in. This will be better and more pleasing, whether to winner or loser, than the utter ruin of either can be." “I am quite content with that ar tangement,” observed Smith, “al shough, of course, it is a pecuniaty racrifice.” “You are a noble fellow!” exclaim ed Lloyd and Robinson. ‘‘Then I am also content.” sail Jones, “although 1 needs must lose by the arrangement. “Generous man!” exclaimed Mr. Brown enthusiastically ; “yes, he needs must lose!” I rose from my seat and looked at Smith’s cards ; he had three aces—the best hand any man can hold. I turned from him with sorrow in my heart for the poor married man, and looked over June’s cards. He had three arcs, also ! \\ hen they had left off playing waist, the white packs had somehow got mixed together, and so the two gentlemen had all their excitement for nothing. They had each enjoyed the luxury of ruining a friend and of being magnanimous, at a cheap rate; and if it had not bean for the interposition of the writer, it is my belief that they would have been Imaging still.
