MORNING APPEAL
TBDB8DAT DECEMBER 19. 18.
HOLIDAY GOODS AT RAIL'S.
Our neighbor on the crrner, Colonel Rail,
Kaa just opened a splendid assortment of very
handsome and attractive holiday goods, es
pecially in the glassware and China line,
notably some elegant sets, also vases and the
likes. Now is the day and now is tho hour
to venture forth into the realms of Railery
and lay in something nice for your sweetheart
or your father-iu-lnw. Give the old man a
ckance.
THE CHRISTMAS EVE SOCIALS.
As we promised our readers we wo.uld do,
we have presented them this morning wi'h
Professors Melone & Lander's advertisement
of their first Tuesday evening social. It will
inaugurate a series of very delightful parties,
and we congratulate our dancing friends upon
the opening of a very pleasant season.
BOSKO.
HERE AND THERE.
We are preparing a poem on this wonder
ful man. It will be entitled "Bosko the
Tailor-inan." Meanwhile we call attentioi
to his reconstructed advertisement in this
Morning's Appeal. The One Pi ice Cloth
ing Store still waves its flag!
R FRED. BROOKS.
The display of holiday goods, especially
toys, in Mr. Brooks' place of business is un
usually attractive. In fact he has the largest,
best selected and most attractive (likewise
cheapest) stock of toys in Ormsby county
Don't you forget it.
Goiso to Santa Monica. General John
Day, Surveyor General of this State, will
remove to Santa Monica, California, im
mediately after the expiration of his term of
office. The General has twenty acres of
very rich land, situated about three miles out
of the town, wpon which ho has planted 1.000
orange trees, and after his settlement there
h4 contemplates planting 400 mere. Thse
rees will, m tho course of , two or three years,
Hear, on an average, 1,000 oranges each, per
annum. With that fruit selling at from $25
to 930 per thousand, which is now the market
price, the General will realize a handsome
fortune each year besides having a comfort
able and cozy home into which none of the
Doisonous gases from the filthy pool of politics
will fliat. General D.iy was among the first
settlers in this State, after the discovering of
the Coinstock lode; and is a thoroughly re
fined gentleman of the old school, whose
many friends will miss him after his depart
ure. Bat whit is Nevada's loss will be Cal
ifornia's gain.
A New Doigb. There was a platoon if
boys strung across the street in front of the
Carson Theater last evening about br.nd-play-
ing time, each with a lighted torch in his
hand. Of course this novel style of attract
ing the crowd had the desired effect, and th
doors of the theater were soon beseiged by
multitude of "gentlemen only," come to see
the naughty, blondes and observe the sweet
and graceful motions of the Ca;i Caneers.
How sweet to see tender youth thus lighting
the way to innocent amusement!
There is a pleasure in the writing of puffs
which must be foregone when one sits down
to the less serious and sentimental task of
composing the ponderous editorial, the ex
haustive essay, the wide and windy adver
tisement or the tell-tale poem. Your thor
oughgoing puff is full of the real business of
life like the game of politics or the pros
ecution of war. ' The puff-writer whose soul
is in his art, feels the grateful viands des
cending his throat as he mentions the large
and generous cheer of one hotel or the lush
abundance of an eating house; his mind's eye
sees the glitter of the gems his pen portray
the while he writes of auieythists and pearls,
and the lordly topaz, rubies and that imperial
thing of things, the diamond; his heart glows
amid the fancied fragrance of those floral
wonders which make the milliner's window
look like a garden; his soul falls into some
thing akin to revelry as his imagination wan
ders in wanton mood among the silks and
laces and filmy things which lie upon the
shelves and within the drawers of the dry
goods man; and there is a sturdy warmth in
the mention of the grocer's bags and firkin
a glow of heart, as at a winter evening's fire,
is felt in and over him at the thought of the
cheery bar, the snug parlor of the village inu,
the well warmed shop of the apothecary and
eke the barber's chair! Smell the fragrance
of that Havana as we puff it a grateful im
agination; let the sense of comfort grow and
expand as the writer makes eloquent his
thoughts of stout 8iirtout and stouter shoe,
of coat and vest, yea, and the troiiser which
graces his leg, with.il! And not without some
fond emotions doth the pufhsh man sit him
down to pen the virtues of the butcher-shop;
for there is a hearty companionship in the
m!n of skewers and steel; and who ahull fitly
describe the gleeful glare of the smithy, and
what hand, however deft doth not hesitate
upon the threshhold of the candle-lighted
cordwainery? Oh, visions of my youth! How
we have sat and wondered as we listened at
the tales told and mighty adventures related
from that Bench from which there is no ap
peal! One hoped his own boyish shoe, then
under repair at heel and toe, itself taking on
its humble share of the inspiration of the
scene, might almost never be mended, so
sweet it was to linger there and drink to the
dregs the gentle romance of the hour! There
is an emphasis no other man imparts when
the cobbler, twitching the waxed-ends to the
swift completion of each destined stitch, sends
his bared elbows with vigorous jerk toward
either listener, accompanying the action with
the words of his argument or his tal-j of hair
breadth scapes by sea and land. It is not in
your gre it lactones nor yet in your snops oi
many hands where this glamor of romance is;
ut only where the good shoemaker, with
perhaps, one silent apprentice whose duty
and privilege) it is to listen, beats the
ipstone aud drives the awl, lord of
he scene and its works.

Disagreed. Concerning the trial of Drex
ler's defaulting clerk, the Gold Hill News of
last evening says: , The jury in the case of
State vs. Edward. Malim, after, having re
mained out all night, came into court this
morning at 10 o'clock and stated that they
had not been able " to agree upon a verdict
and were discharged. They stood nine to
three, but which way was not stated to the
court.
North Carson. It is whispered about
this city that a development of a most cheer
ing character will soon be made in the North
.Carson mine. , In that event prospecting in
the hills around our town will commence in
earnest, and Carson will have a bright and
more prosperous future before it than was
ever dreamed of.

Fire! The alarm of fire ni.;ht before last.
Doth not the air or, rather, at an early hour yesterday morn-
mell of wax and wetted leather and become ing, was caused by the burning of an ash bar-
redolent with inorrocco as we write? And rel in the rear of the St. Charles Hotel. The
-.hall this humble scene be so full of the rem- lire department were out in less than no time,
iuiscence of youth, and the Liter and largtr but their services were not required.
.scenes of manhood and active life be written
of and not stiest their thoughts? Alas!
and alas! The ineffacable scenes of boyhood
tre our best and truest and most enduring
memories, growing purer and dearer, year by
year, and at last, let us hope, being hallowed
by the peace and serenity of age.
Standing opposite that sorry pile of mis
used stone known as the County Building,
the observer sees with pain the many splotches
of mold which either through some animal
cul.tte or fungoid action have grown upon the
valla of that edifice especially above and
ibout the door f that ancient hostelrie, the
.Magnolia. Dark gray spots are these some
thing of the nature of what are called cob
webs, perhaps ; and it wouid seem that the
stuart and industrious application of a stout
broom thereat might bring on a much-desired
cleansing, oufrmittea wun all modesty, on
ousters of the Board.
Speaking of building fronts, one is remind
ed of the very trim and tidy appearance
wrought upon the face of Mr. Thaxter's drug
store by the clever hand of the painter. All
this artisan's handiwork, we notice, is ex
ceedingly well done. But for a treacherous
uemory ho should be called by name in this
mention.
The atmosphere is filled with a too abund-
ant'dust. Each vehicle or horse which passes
through the street sends great clouds of this
mpalpable substance into the air. This world
leeds a drenching. Its face is shamefully
lirtv. So much dirt is not healthful to
world, fleah or devil. Jupiter Pluviiis is be
sought for a pouring dispensation even tho'
hi cometh in the hardened form of hail or
he more light and fleecy shape of snow. It
would be well, it seems to us, in this dusty
Christmas tide to test the efficacy of the rain
jauge.
Rkpaikino. Vic. Muller has been putting
his place in apple pie order. Repairing, re-
varnishing, re painting and making the en
tire establishment very bright, sweet and
attractive. They say that you can get an
amazing nice draught of beer of Vic. when
he is in beer-drawing humor.
Clouino Ur. The softening air has bred
sheet of clouds and spread it across the
sky, betokening falling weather. Which the
same is a'good sign, even if it fails to conie
true. I
