SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR OUR AMA
TEUR POLITICIANS.
While our Dollr Var Jen Respectables are
laboring with some anxiety for such organ
izition as will perpetuate to posterity the
great conceptions that are to re-enfranchise
such as have difficulty in taking proper pol
itical eare of themselves, we are pained to
observe that the committee and organization
of the Republican party are deemed unworthy
of their recognition, much less of their re
npect. Insomuch as the Republican party is
to them a constant excitative to feelings of
distrust, not to say contempt, it is, notwith
standing, the duty of such Republicans as are
not lost to every sense of humanity to em
erge from the thick jjloom of that dense ignor
ance and degradation which surrounds their
uncompromising loyalty to party, long enough
to volunteer those gentler offices which may
save these seekers after a purer philosophy of
life and action, from wandering in the wilder
ness like lost sheep. With a generosity, there
fore, which puts to serioutujUestion the ancient
and respectable dogma of total depravity, we
appeal to the Democracy of Ormsby County
for the loan to these enthusiastic cultivators
of the moral and political virtues, the Dolly
Yardens, of such one or the other of its county
committees as can best be pared from active
service. Should, however, the Democracy
find its accustomed alacrity in good works a
matter of difficulty in the distinguishing be
tween the personel and functions of the two
committees, it will doubtless find itself able to
detail Mr. Warren Wasson for the pious
work that is so pressing in its nature.
If, God forbid ! all such appeal for aid to dis
tressed fellow beings sha'l prove of no avail,
the respectable intelligences who are the sub
ject of humane solicitude must again com
mune with themselves as of yore, for that
help which comes of wise counsel. Go to !
Are not the heads of Departments of the Vir
ginia and Truckee Railroad also of the sect f
the Philosophers ? Is not alsn he that driveth
the hewers of the cedars of Lebanon the friend
of struggling human merit? The shout of
joy shall be heard in Jerusalem when these
things are remembered. 'Here,' surely, ' is '
richness. ' What can be more appropriate an
salutary than the railroad whistle whicli led
Dolly Vardenism from victory to victory
while it sat with the wise men and true, in
Legislative session ? Here is the long sought
but now found organization, ready made, and
its efficiency already tested to complete satis
faction. What else in the world outside of
the alleged corrupt machinery of Republican
ism could have led up a deluded Dolly Var
den of Democratic instincts by the ear and
Toted him audibly while he slept ? Let the
blind no longer lead the blind while Dolly
Vardenism conquers the world under such
captaincy. Let us j jin in the Doxology.
The famous Egyptian obelisk, "Cleopatra's
Needle," which was recently set up on the
banks of the Thames, and which, it was found
would rapidly become disorganized by the ac
tion of the peculiar London atmosphere, has
been coated with a silicious wash which it is
believed will protect its surface for years
The effect of the process, it is said, has sur
passed expectation, and is only to be c jmpared
to the restoration of an old painting. The
obelisk now appears as if just chiseled from
the rock, showing its original colors, the
quartz and feldspar glittering in the sunlight,
The intaglio also comes out rnoro distinctly
than before.
Tobacco Smoke. The authorities of sev
eral German cities, says Clumbers Journal,
have been seriously considering the evils re
sulting from smoking, now so generally prac
ticed by boys. In certain towns the police
have been ordered to forbid all boys under six
teea to smoke in the streets, and a punish
ment by fine or imprisonment is meted to of
fenders. It has been the testimony of several
eminent physicians that the too general and
excessive use of tobacco is the main cause of
color blindness, now occasioning such great
anxiety from its influence upon railway and
other accidents, and also upon military effic
ieney.
From the New Haven Register: What more
estatic state of enjoyment can be imagined
than to swing in the hammock on the cool
erandah, and, gazing through the perfume '
smoke of your cigarette, to drink in, as it
were, the graceful evolutions of your mother-in-law
as she pushes and drags the lawn
mower over the ground, in a spiteful manner,
"to shame the head of the family into trim
ming np things around the house, so's to look
like folks."
A Nice Preacher. Rev. O. G. Anderson
and Mrs. Hayes, of Charles City, Iowa, were
arrested at Ottumwa, Iowa, on the lGth in
stant, where they were registered and roomed
as man and wife. Anderson has a wife, now
lying at the point of death from the shock,
and three children.

MISCELLANEOUS.
Tuesday was the hottest day in Nev Y.rk
for three years, the thermometer Touching 00
in the shade.
The Indians of Salt River and Gila valleys,
Arizona, are said to raise the finest wheat in
Arizona. . '1 heir crop every year amounts to
several million pounds.
The San Jose Tim' ssnya that Charles Smith
who was so dreadfully maimed by the prema
ture discharge of a cannon at the Fourth of
July sham battle, is improving slowly and is
now considered out of danger.
All the sophomores who were expelled from
the State University of California, for issuing
a "bogus" are still "out in the cold" and show
no disposition to give the names of the wri
ters of the obnoxious document.
Anthony Seabriskie, of Murrisiana, said to
be worth ?10,000,000, was run over and killed
on Tuesday, through a misapprehension of
trains. His sister, who was with him. was so
shocked that her life is despaired of.
A Galveston JTcir.i special from Fort David
says: 1 he Indians attacked the Dutsehurer
rancho, three miies east of there, and killed
Juan Josia and the herder's wife, ami drove
off sixteen horses. A party of fourteen citi
zens and a detachment of troops are in pur
suit. The Rev. Dr. Jobson, one of the most, emi
nent English Wesleyans has had an attack of
paralysis, which it is feared, will necessitate
his retirement from the important position he
has held for some years past at the Confer
ence otuce. Vr. Jobson was president of. the
Conference in Hull in 18159.
Reno's Tar Uccket Again. The Journal
of yebterday contains the following account of
the latest exploit of the 601 organization of
Reno. Tom Rogers, the last victim, was cow-
hided by the Brigade not long ago, and warned
never to return to Reno, which warning he
promised to remember. It leaked out that he
was cowhided for selling whisky to Indians
and fooling with the squaws. It is said that
after leaving town he made threats, stating he
would come back some day, get drunk and
probably kill three or four men. He was in
town yesterday and was under the influence
af liquor, but showed no warlike demonstra
tions. Late last night we heard the cry of
"Stand Back," a3 the Brigade were capturing
'lirn on a back alley, this cry being a command
when the Brigade are at work and will not al
low any interference. Over to the V. S: T.
bridge he was taken and ordered to doff his
raiment. The tar was laid on thick and heavy
so that his hair and face were full of it. Then
the feathers fell in wild profusion upon the
sable figure, tranforming it into a ghostly ap
parition. The (SOI then left him alone in his
glory. He procured hot water at the round
house and cleaned his face and hands but his
hair and body were still coated. Tom left on
the 9 o'clock freight train for Verdi. He
avowed his determination to return, but w
should judge this second visitation from th
masked band ought to satisfy him.
Raisinh and Wines. The Marysville Ap
peal says that " raisin growing is certain to
become a profitable and extensive business i:
California. A short time ago a ctr load of
California raisins arrived at New York, and
about the same time another one reached the
Boston market. This means our grape grow
ers have at last reached that desirable knowl
edge of knowing how to make raisins which
command a ready sale in all markets, and
compare favorably with the Malaga. Ther
is no limit to the capacity of our soil for
grape raising, and it it likely to increase and
advance until California becomes noted for
its fine raisins as for her excellent wheat. Cal
ifornia grape growers have manifested great
energy and perseverance in this new industry
They have expended large sums of money in
experimenting with the different foreign vari
eties, and have finally determined which are
best adapted to our climate and soil. They
have also learned how to cure them. Abou
30,000 boxes of raisins were cured last year,
but this industry is sure to increase until Cal
ifornia will supply the whole trade of the
United States. Grape cuttings have been in
troduced from Spain, France and ail other
wine-growing countries, and it is a settled fact
that both our wines and raisins .are fast be
coming favorites in the Eastern markets.
A dispatch dated Berlin, July 17, says
Serious disturbances have taken place among
the workmen in the iron foundries of Silesia
in consequence of a demand for increased
wages suggested by the imposition of the new
protective duties on iron. It has been neces.
sary to call out the troops to enforce order.
Two workmen were killed and four wounded.
Sixty arrests have been made.

general cargo. Sixty cattle were saved.
