At half-past 2 o'clock yester day afternoon the jury in the Combs case sent for Judge Ed wards and announced that they were unable t agree. They were accordingly discharged. The following is an authentic account of the ballots while they were out. After retiring they took dinner and then a secret ballot was held which resulted in six for guilty and six far not guilty. SECOND BALLOT. Aheut 3 o'clock another ballot was taken and the result was four for manslaughter, three for assault and battery and not guilty five. THIP.D BALLOT. This was taken in the even ing and stood as follows : Assault and battery nine, murder in the second degree three. FOURTH BALLOT. M'irder iu second doeree Meyer, Youngblood, Lebo." ' Manslaughter C a r b e rry, Longabaugh. Assault and battery Hackett, lloge, Tennant, liowker, Plater, Dorsey, Laws. FIFTH BALLOT. On the next ballot Dorsey changed his vote lo manslaugh ter, and Hacketi was asieep. No further ballots were taken, as there was evidently no use. The juror who was the most strenu ous advocate of the assault and battery verdict was Haekett. PUBLIC FEELING. The feeling on the streets when the result was known was one of general surprise that any one on the jury could have for an instant entertained the idea that a simple assault and bat tery had been committed, and the jurors who voted fr this verdict weie roundly denounced. The case will now have to be tried over again at an expense of at least s 5,000. Judge Ed wards s:;ys that it will not be again tried iu this county and a change of venue will be allowed. Cleau l"j. The cause of the sickness now prevailing in Carson is nothing more er less than foul water closets. There is nett ing ter rible or mysterious about the sickness when one comes to ex amine the first cause. The short est way to remedy the evil is to remove this cause, and that can only be done by a thorough cleaning of the foul water close ts throughout the city. Where families are too poor to go to the expense, half " bushel of chloride of lime put in once a month will kill the active germs which ! produce the disease and save the in funeral expenses. Car son is situated in the healthiest section of country on the coast, and if anything is wrong it is w ith the town itself and not the locality. No one can afford to put this matter oif. A general cleaning and scattering of lime should begin at once. yiisH Ttartilairi Funeral. Miss Ida Marshall was buried yesterday from the residence of II. L. Tickner. The attend ance consisted only of the inti mate friends of the deceased, for fear of contagion from disease. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers : Major Ford, E. J. Parkinson, It. il. Wright, Ernest Eckhart, Dorsey . Note ware and Jacob Allenbach. Ap propriate memorial services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church this morning at 11 o'clock. The friends of the family of deceased are specially invited. Vanning; Kehool. At the Opera House. There was an enormous gathering at Avery's Ho!e-in-the-Wall last evening, it being the occasion of the anniversary of the opening of the establish ment. An attractive bill of fare was set before the guests, print ed in the hight of the ert, the "devouring element" was there in full force, and made a holy show of the fes'ive board. After the bduquet the guests ad journed to the boxing-room, and some tremendous bouts were indulged in. The combatants fortified by strong grub and searching wine struck blows that could be heard to the V. v T. depot. "Katadsly 'oud acted." The Genoa Courier s:iys : The removal of Dr. Dawson from the charge of th? Insane Asylum shows up to be a high handed, but poorly and snidely conducted piece of political and i malicious jobbery, which is as it sheuld be, generally denounced throughout the State, and also in California. It has been in timated that a stop was to be put to the newspapers saying any more in regard to it, which is really impossible through any means &f actual force, which is the case with only one or two papers. The Courier then proceeds to intimate that the Enterprise has received orders to "chop on the racket." A successful thief on New England railroads manages to sit, near the traveler whose trunk he knows to be valuable. Then he tries to turn over the back of the seat, pretends to find some difficulty with the lock, and asks the victim for the loan of his check to slip down upon the catch, and so throw it out of place. While thus using the ar ticle he exchanges it tor another, which he hands back without the trick being detected. At the end of the journey, he looses no time in presenting the stolen check and getting away with the baggage to which it is at tached. Neither M139 Ilealy nor Mr. Cagwin liave the scarlet fever as reported. The mil Wheel. The following graceful bit of verse is from the pen of Florence M. Byrne, of Gras Valley, a niece of W. S. Byrne, of the Carson Mint : The mill-wheel turns in the sunlight, The mill- wbeel turns in the euade ; And the limpid strecni that gleams so bright, Runs merriiy down the glade, Year in, and year out it dances. And croons its endless tune, While the glistening spray-drop g!:;ces. Alike In November and June. It does not grieve for the master, Who sleeps in the deil alone ; The little brook glides but the taster, J!y that humble grave moss-frown, Day after day some fair fa.-e Pisses away from sight. But the wheel turns oh with lazy grace The lipples are just as bright. O life, thou art but a mill-wheel. Turning in gloom and gleiira ; In days of woe, and days of cea!. Thy flashing foaiu-beiis beam. Thou dost not care for the quick, or the dead, Thou hast thine own sweet n iii, Till the limpid s'.ream in the glude has 11 ed, And the sphu&ii-g wheel is till. i.uroitTAvr.
