Our friend of the Belmont Chronicle, speaks our scntimeuU, when he says: Every man who reads a newspaper, and we pity the man who does not, im agine that if he was but the editor of that paper, he would tshow the world what newspaper should be. Every one will ac knowledge that the boot maker is the only one capable of making a presentable cov ering for a foot and that one but a hat- t;r would furnish a shocking bad hat, aud that a house carpenter of all others is to be trusted with the construction of house, yet at the same time they think thai anybody can edit a newspaper.' As tjst we will vacate our chin- for a week gladly, if anybody wishes to try it, if they will agree to be responsible for the dam ages resulting lroiu their incapacity, or negligence. It is the duty of an editor to ' show tlio very ago and body in which we live its form and pressure.' In doing this he i not to work alone. Every subscriber to a newspaper, and every citizen in a com munity has an interest in keeping up his puper, and to this end he should exert himself to send to the editor ull items oi news coming under his observation which could be of any possible interest to any number of persons, the state of the crops, tlw I,.,l,l, e j', t.i ...i . .. i i ucumi ui luc uuigiiuoruooa, ueaws, and marriages are ever welcome to the col umns of a newspaper, and they are eagerly looked for by the readers. The nature of an editor's business is such as to keep him almost constantly ai home, and it is therefore utterly impossible for him to collect, personally, local infor mation from all parts of the country oi State: much as he may desire to do so. If every one would take an interest in this matter as they should do, a newspaper would then be more like it should be, a newspaper. With plenty of local items and a sufficiency of material aid' an edit or's life would be a pleasant one. X't'RE ron Haed Times. It is generally conceIed that one of the prominent causes of the present financial depression through out the country is the excessive importa tion of foreign goods and consequent drainage of moa?y to meet the indebted ness, fa this article of foreign silks alone we purchase tiventy millions of dollars. ! worm every year not a very flattering compliment to American ladies, when we have domestic good every way superior. -vnotner indication of the extravagance' which lias prevailed is found in a letter! lrom an importing house in Xew York, stating that the amount of duties paid for French artidoial flowers, for the first quar ter of the current fiscal year, was almost double the amount of duties paid on rail- i : i t i. ,i . luuu nun; m tais siaie oi uuugs we are glad to notice that tuite a large number of fashionable ladies of tho city of Xew York have formad a society for tho pro motion of American industry, by encour aging domestic manufactures. Lippincott & Parr, Pittsburgh Gen tlemen: You have no doubt heard ore this, ot the fire in our town; you have also been written to in relation to some of your make of safes, bought by J. F. & B. T. Meek, Some years ago which could not be got out, nnd remained in the bunting building until next day, nt 10 o'clock. Our safe was in the fire 10 hours, at least half the time red hot was not taken nut until cool enough to attach a rope to one of the rings. When drawn out by tho bystanders, who were anxious to bet upon tho contents being burnt tip upon which proposition we offered to stake atid loose what wc hud left from the fire. Those present wcro induced to bcliove our safe of the same kind as one belonging to our next door neighbor, whose safe was of Cin cinnati niauulacture, nnd which upon being opened was found nothing but a few pieces of gold and silver com fused und stuck together, all of the books and papers being consumed or chared so as to bo entirely useless. 1'ho fire was intense, and our safe, when opened, us tonished nil present. Rooks perfectly good wiiu tiie exception ol the glue used in the bind ing till tho papers good and pliable as when placed a day or two before, the fine polished steel work not colored In the least, whero it was in ooxes or wrapped in paper. There appears to be a sort of gas vapor generated whilst iu the fire which rusted the steel goods, us soon as the safs was opened and the articles exposed to the atmosphere. This is all tho damage done to anything in our Bafe. The envelope enclosing this letter took its chance you can sec for your selves. We had conlidenco in your safe before now we would not have any other make. Tho safe contained during the ten hours it re mained in the fire, many valuable tools and ma chinery, used by us iu our business, some of which could not be replaced on this continent value say of 1200; ulso about 8000 in cash notes, our books ot accounts; a small sum of pa per money, valuable materials, &c, we suppose the aggregate value of said contents would amount to at least to S 0,000. The heat to which this safe was subjected was so intense as to warp the iron casting und crack the door frame nnd lanve other marks of the ex tent of heat to which it passed through. Wc regard this manufacture of safe as perfectly re liable and a certain protection against loss of contents by fire. We would use no other we have ever seen if a Phoenix could be procured. ept2:ly Yours, MKKK& MLLAU. JOSEFH PLUMMER, "Wholesale Dealer in .Boots and Shoes, Itri-iriilis, Ions, lilitlicr An:., NO.
