FEUILLETON DU MESCHACEBÉ. LA FISSURE. PAR ED. MARTIN-VIDEAU. (SUITE) L'exécution suivit de près la pensée. J'abordai un groupe de plusieurs per sonnes parmi lesquelles j'avais avisé des gens de connaissance. L'accueil fut, selon mon hypothèse, très cordial. On causait politique. Après l'échange des premières politesses, je pris part à la conversation. L'un de mes interlocu teurs exprimait des idées d'un socialisme très ardent. Je lui opposai la répu gnance que j'avais pour de tels princi pes. Il riposta. Nous discutâmes. A la fin. je m'écriai avec véhémence: -Permettez-moi de vous dire que vous défendez là des utopies dangereu ses. Oui, monsieur, des utopies. La vérité, c'est que l'homme est naturelle ment enclin à jouir de la vie des autres, en parasite. C'est ce que font les vaga. bonds des grands chemins, pillards de profemsion, qui, de champ en champ, volent au tarvailleur la nourriture qu'il gagne à la sueur de son front jusqu'à complet épuisement de ses forces. C'est ce que font aussi les mendiants des villes qui simulent des infirmités pour exiger de la société une subsistance que leur paresse refuse de leur donner. Moins d'une demi-heure après j'étais à ma porte, le coeur secoué par des battements désordonnés. La nuit étant venue, je me rendis à mon jardin et je brouettai mon gravier que je jetai par pelletées dans lepuits. Je travaillai de la sorte, avec une ardeur infatigable, pendant quatre on cinq heures ane in terruption. N'ayant plus de gravier, je refermai le couvercle au cadenas et f'allai dormir. Ce n'était pas sans d'affreux battements de coeur que je m'approchais du puits. Je soulevais une pierre, je la lançais. Elle heurtait les parois, ricochait l'eau. Cela faisait: "Plouf!" Parfois l'eau jaillissait jus qu'à moi, m'éclaboussait ; parfois le bruit s'assourdissait : la pierre était tombée sur le cadavre. Je frissonnais comme si une secousse électrique m'eût couru de la tête aux pieds. Encore un moellon, un autre moellon. La brouette be vidait; je la remplissais. Cela devait monter dans le puits; le cadavre, à pré sent enseveli, devait avoir coulé. Je jetais toujours. La sueur ruisselait sur tout mon corps. Je ne sentais plus la fatigue de mes bras, la cuisson de mes mains meurtries, déchirées. Il fallait en finir avant l'aube, il fallait que, le lendemain, il ne fût plus question de rien: l'homme serait à jamais enfoui sous un tombeau de moellons, et moi, moi, je pourrais respirer sans terreur. Le tas maintenant, baissait. Sous la chute des pierres l'eau avait cessé de jaillir. Je me hâtais de plus en plus, car je voyais une lueur blanchir à l'ho rizon. Tout à coup un vent frais passa; les nuages se déchirèrent et la pluie se mit à tomber. Très fine, elle ne tarda pas à avoir imbibé mes vetements, me pénétrant jusqu'à la peau. Je fus se coué par un frisson glacé. Alors, seule ment, je renonçai à ma besogne. Je rentrai chez moi et après avoir bu un verre de vin chaud je me couchai. J'es sayai en vain de m'assoupir: mes mus dles, surmenés par un accès de travail, avaient des soubresauts qui me réveil laient. Et puis, quoique pelotonné sons mes couvertulres et malgré le vin chaud que j'avais bu, je ne parvenais pas à me réchauffer. Quelquefois mâme je me prenais à grelotter, à claquer des dents. Sûrement, il se passait en moi quelque chose d'insolite. Je me relevai, je bus un grog et me remis au lit. Une réac tion commença à se faire, ma peau suinta. Je- pensai: "Voilà le salut !" Con sidlering the nature of the business to be carried on by this corporation, the board of directors is authorized to issue full paid shares at not less than par, in payment of property, franchises or plants actually received and purchased by corporation in tlhe course of its blus iness, and for lab ,r done and seryices actually rendered : the whole of which to be estimated at fair market value. ARTICLE V All the corporate powers of this cor poration are hereby vested in and shall be exercised by a board of directors, to be composed of five stockholders, three of whom shall constitute a quorum. Said board shall be elected on the first Monday of each year. Lezin Ory, Emygde (ry, John L. Ory, Placide Ory and Augustin Lasseigne shall con stitute the first board of directors and shall hold office until the first Monday of January, 1910. All elections shall be held at the office of the Company, under the supervision of two conmmissioners to be appointed by the president. Notice of the pro posed election of directors shall be given in a newspaper published in the parish of St. John the Baptist, State of Louisi ana,two weeks previous to such election. Each share of stock shall be entitled to one vote to be cast by its owner, either in person or by proxy. A majority of the votes cast shall elect. Failure to elect officers on the (late above mention ed shall not dissolve this corporation, but the incumbent board of directors shall cause an election to be held with in thirty days thereafter: on failure to do so, the incumbent directors shall continue to act until the date fixed for the next general election and until their successors shall have qualified. Vacancies accurring in the board of directors shall be filled by the stock holders at a meeting of stockholders called for that pupiose by the president or thet board of directoJrs. r t he n atripn of each. State of Louisiana, and after notice sent to each stockholder by mail. ARTICLE VII Whenever this corporation is to be dissolved by limitation or other cause, its affairs shall be liquidated by two commissioners to be appointed by the stockholders pt a specail meeting con vened fbr the purpose by the prebident or by the board of directors, as above provided. They shall remain in office until the affairs of this corporation shall beliquidated. In case of the death or inability to act of any of said commis sionera, the survivor shall continue to act until a sudeessor shall be elected by the stockholders. I the stockholders.
