Last Saturday, August 19th, r,ur W1ard convention as.(embled at the ). C(,urthouse about 11 o'clock. They ol(Pned the roll of membership of the itur. liemocratic Conservative Club, and Sher in a few minutes there were some 5; or 80 names registered, among \% h1oml "A, t"ere several colored men. Evervthing . movted on smoothly, P. II. 'l'uler acting as temporary Chairman. After ET. the signing of the club, is. :. M1cle nmore was chosen President of the Convention, after taking his seat, a move was made to proceed to elect dehlgates by ballot, the first ten re reiving the highest number e f votes to be declared the delegates of the convention. Carried. After the vote was counted and the = delegaites declared elected the conven tion adjourned. We never witnessed a more harmno nlOls meeting and the delegates lrer selected with a view of getting the expression of the entire ward, being: taken from different parts of the ward, and one who mieaus to act upon the square will not object to the selection. , fact eWard No. 8 acted out the let ter of the instructions of theExecutive C'omattit'ee. Levees. I, The fullowing questions have been ' hantded us for publication and we would be pleased if some one nlore conversant with the can:;e would give s anu an nswer : "1. The people of our overflowed lands would like to be informed through tile h:,'o. why so much more water comies over our lands of late years than formerly ? 2 Through what brake in the levee does it cole ? 3. Is there any hope that something will be done to keep it out in the future? IVe have been itnformed that the ends of the Opossom Fork Levee have been washed away and that there is a large body of water that runs around the ends during the overflow, that the levee proper is still up. Another solution why this country T. overflows worse than before the levees were put up is that the levees below on the lissississippi remained up and thus confining the water there, the* effect of which is to run it over the country which is unprotected. We regret very much to see so much feeling of discontent among our people. Not the people generally, for the majority seem to have taken sonic interest in the Ward conventions and wherever the delegates were elected they will undoubtedly reflect the sen-, timent of the neighborhood where they came from. At Alto the meeting was very, Farge. The question came up as to whether they should express a preffer- ence for candidates. It was put to a vote. The negatives getting about 29 votes and the affirmative over GO. In thus participatiug they all committed tlhemselves to the result.. All but a few submitted and we learn that eight out the ten delegates voted with the minority. We would not mention this only for the reason that the matter i will be discussed and perihap an ero of neous inmpression get out as to the lace true state of the case. A Misunderstanding. e It is reported that a statement was to, made at Alto on Sattwurdey the 19th the upon our authority that Capt. 11 P. Wich ells was not a candidate for Ilepre.j 6, sentative of this pariah. We have no recollection of ever saying whetler he was or was not a candidate. We sBy,regret that, so much is beaing said Me- in a matter so easy understood. Let Lou. them announce themselves in the the BlAcoN, if they are ean.:idates. It teis stated that Ward No. 1 endorsed I ee Capt. Wells for Representative and he ie is well known to the people of Rich I ,lad. In fact all the men we hear of I a that will likely go before the conven- I ay- tion for that office are nmeu who stsand and high in the estimnation of our people. io 8ittag Bmll's Ultimatuam. SST. S Tie choice of this \Ward for Ilepre-. sentative was Capt. II. P', \\'ells, a I , gentle:man well known for his high i I legal attainments, and his great moral ,i Sworth. Since his name has been " : placed in nomination, Mr. Editor, it , s has been suggested that our sister , . War(lds will not accord to us the lItep:- , resentative, no uatter how suitable " may be our candidate, for fear his , ability may be used to divide the., Parish, and to create a new Parish , with DI)elhi as the site. I assure you and the good people of Ilichland that " such fears are grounrdless. The mat- I ter of a new Parish has been thor- c oughly discussed and discarded from g.{ sour own minids. To-day, if without C an effort, a new Parish, with D)elhi as site, was tendered us, it would be I, rejected by the masses of our own citizens, and particularly by the busi Sness men of the Ward. We could s not, with the sparse population em Sbraced in the territory proposed for " .a Parish, bear the taxation required to erect public buildings. If neces sary, I know that Capt. Wells will give his assurance to my assertions. I write this, Mr. Editor, not to detract from any gefatleman now before the apeople for this position, but to have t, Sjustice done to our Ward-a Ward ki a that according to its voting population, ii s is, and has always been, the banner II f Democratic WVard of the Parish; and i I'that our choice for Represenutative a may go before the Conventien with I out any false prejudices against hintm.
