MISCELLANEOU I. '.l'h Cl.(C:L Of ANIMAL AND VJ,5.r'A DLE Live.-In a recent lecture upon as trououny, Professor Loomis expressed the opinion that every member of the solar systenm had originally a cvery high tera perature, which is constantly undergo ing the lpro.css of cooling by radiation. Frum an abstract of the lecture we cut the following: If this wine to proceed, as evidently it does without interruuon, it will descend to a point at which all vitalihty, is irms possible and must of necessity cease. The era of life, then, is that of a temn perature adapted to animal existence, and is necessarily short and bounded. It is the history of an era of a tempera ture between certain limits. The lecturer applied this postulate to Neptuae and shwecd what nobody denies that hr being like man can now exist upon that planet. He passed on succes aiivy to Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mer cury, assuming that the temperature of the planueuts exterior to the earth is too low, and that of the interior planets too high for vegetable and animal life. The earth occupies the temperate zohe of our system. As to the moon, the changas with atmospheric clouds, would continually present to a lunarian, are never correspondingly observed by us who gaze upon the moon. The moon has neither atmosphere such as ours, nor twiiight. Tue equatorial temperature of the moon must therefore be lower than tihat of the earth. The length of her day and night, too, are other added con diuouis equally unfavorable either to an in.a! or vegetable life. Tie surface of the most distant planet may, possibly, once have been the thea tre of active life-that is, at a period, and during such period as was deter mined by her cooling down and remain ing at the temperature suitable for such circumstances. The gradual process of cooling from radiation, which is goilig on even now, in time will stop ;ble whee!s of vital existence. In course of time our own familiar earth becomes sufficiently cool; first, for the lower forms of annual and vegetable life, and lastly for man, the image of his Maker, and the depo-si tory of intellect and feeling. The fate of other p)lanets will utima tely.become our own. Life extinct here may probably be afterwards observed on Venus, and on Mercury, to subside even the body of the sueranbsides into frigi dity. Plants are constituted chiefly of carbon; this they extractl fromn the air, and chiefly when the suniis shining on them. With his feebler radiuncv foilows the 'death of vegetables.. The analogy of the physical history of our own earth, would lead us to form such a judgment in reference to 1hi other bodies of oursvstemn, If it be said water may be,something other than water there wo must invent a new chemi try. On each of the planets the life period is brief, and it matters little in reference to the question of inhabitancy at what date in the history of the universe it has coinenced, endured and become extin guished upon each. In that most dis tant from the sun, evidently, it would commence first. D)ramnttis perso.el-The landlord and a lone tray. eler,. one of James' "solitary horsemen." Traveler rides up to the gate, and asks if li can get breakfast. Laudlord, who had been frequently imposed on by travelers with shiuplasters, and travelers with no money at all, replies that he can if he has the monev to pay for it, and if' that. money be good money. Traveler rejoins, that he has the money-has, in fact, all kinds of money--and exhibits some current shinplasters, which the landlord hooted at; then some unknown bank notes, which the landlord had rath er not take; finally, the traveler pulls out ¶a handful of gold and silver coins, which the landlord, after examining, and mdaking the eagles on them squeail, says will do. Traveler alignts and goes in. Landlord orders a bountiful break fast to be got ready. Twofor three pul lets are murdered, a hen nest robbed, and the flour barrel, smoke house and store room severally invaded. After a con c siderable time breakfast is announced to be ready, and smoking hot on the table. Traveler goes into the dining room very deliberately, and commences a thorough examination of the edibles and drink ables prepared for him -remarking very sternly to the how obsequious landlord --'-ir, since you have been so very par. ticular as to my ability to pay,and have eiamined and scrutinized my money, you must allow me the same privilege with your breakfast. It's a bad rule that won't work both ways." With an aw fal grimace, the landlord acknowleges the justice of his proposition, and the traveler, after a full inspection of every thing on the table, and though ravenous ewith hunger, pronounces the breakfast unworthr-not the thing for his money, by upwards of a great deal. Landlord is struck, all of a heap. Exit traveler down the lane, singing, on an empty, stomach, teadord an tihs Soving bowl 'tntii it doeas n over,.' etc., etc. On the night of the 11th a ,train on . e Ohio and Mississippi Railroad ran of te track near 8andcval, I1.i and the.
