Parish. 17* ROM its commencement, this Journal has been conservative in principle, national j .11 character, and single in its great object of etc vat in j tue industrial employments—Agricul- : aire, Minujaciuring and the Mechanic Arts. Regarding Agriculture as the corner-stone of national prosprentv, we have sought to ad- I vance its interests, by un earnest advocacy of the farmers' rights, by encouraging a just self- ' culture as the true means of elevating his po sition, and by diffusing the best information for the management of the farm, the garden, i the stoca, the dairy, and whatever pertains to! rural economy and thrift. But deeming that Agriculture flourishes best and reaps its richest rewards, in close proxim ity with the Mechanic Arts, we have devoted j to these a portion of our space, condensing information of great value to the mechanic,; and of nearly equal value to the farmer, be- j cause more or leaa directly connected with his employment. Gur motto is OlltVUi'd, not ; only with farming, but with whatever gives! the farmer a quica return and a fair price for i his produce; and this the cultivation of the ■ Mechanic Arts will certainly accomplish. With these principles always paramount, we ! have ever maintained a high moral position, i avoiding everything offensive to good taste, as j also everything sectarian, or bearing upon party politics, or sectional feelings or interests, j thus making our work a fit family visiter for all parts of the country, and securing for it a selector and wider patronage than often hap pens to journals of the kind.
