STEBBINS- Corner Store, OPPOSITE I). F. GLASS MIRE'S HOTEL. j CouDtaspoaT, PA. i THE KNICKERBOCKER MAGAZINE FOR 1802. In the beginning of the last year, when its prcseut proprietors assumed control of THE KNICKERBOCKER, they announced their de termination to spare no pains to place it in its true position as the leading literary Monthly in America. When rebellion had raised a successful front, and its armies threatened the very existence of the Republic, it was impos sible to permit a Magazine which in its circu- j laticn reached the best intellects in the land, ; to continue in a purely literary course, as if. insensible or inditfereut to the dangers which j threatened the Union. The proprietors ac cordingly gave notice that it would present iu its pages forcible expositions with regard to the great question of the times : How to pre serve the United States of America in their integ rity and unity, llow far this pledge has been j redeemed, tiie public must judge. It would' however, be mere affectation to iguore the seal of approbation which the public has already j placed on these efforts. The proprietors grate fully acknowledge this, and it has led them to j embark in a fresh undertaking, the publica tion of THE CONTINENTAL MONTHLY", de- j voted to literature and national policy, in j which Magazine those readers who have fol- ' lowed with sympathy the political and social: views so forcibly expressed of late in our pages, may find them stili further enforced by the most eminent and energetic minds in America. The Knickerbocker, while it will remain firm ; in support of the Uuion, will be found, accord- , ing to the originally expressed intention of the publisher, devoting itself more exclusively j to art and letters, and in maintaining its long established position as the leader in America 1 of the widely varied departments of liteiature to which it is specially devoted. The number for .January commences its thirtieth year. With such antecedents as it j possesses, it seems unnecessary to make any j special pledges as to the future; but it may j not be amiss to say that it will be the aim of its conductors to make it more and more de- j serving of the liberal support it has hitherto ■ received. The same eminent writers who have contributed to it during the past year j will continue to enrich its pages, and in ad- J dition, contributions will appear from others of the highest reputation and Irmnjnany ris ing authors. Wo shall, as before, specially 1 cultivate the genial and humorous in every variety : but during the coming year, however, ! the Knickerbocker will receive many contri- | butions in the highest departments of litera- 1 tare, embracing Critical, Historical, Biograph- j ical, Scientific, or Ethnographical articles, iu all of which special pains will be taken to j introduce that spirted and agreeable tone and | style which have of late years distinguished j really first-class writings of this nature from j the dry and pedantic essays of the old school, j Wc intend te devote especial zeal and labor. to attract to our pages such reading, and con- j fideutly anticipate pre-eminence in this de- j partment. In the January Number we shall publish ; •'Sunshine in Letters," by Charles Godfrey Leland—the of a series of papers on the cheerful and joyous in Literature and Art, 1 which will be found interesting to the most general reader, while at an early date will appear the First Chapters of a most entertain- ; ing and instructive description td' American Life, in the form of a First-class Novel. The Knickerbocker, in short, while retaining the best of the old, will continually add to the cream of the new.
