Address v " mont. 17oct m Beware of Ambuscades. Few people realize the fact that disease lies in ambush everywhere, ready to seize upon the weak. The strong pass through many perils in safety, the strengthless fall by the K j't i, amazing tnat the feeble should totter with uncertain steps over the face of the earth in danger every day of falling victims to the morbid influences by which we are all sur rounded, when a tested and proven vegetable tonic capable of endowing them with the vig or thev need, is procurable in every city, town and settlement.. It might reasonably be thot' that after the twelve year's experience which the world has had of HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS, all would knew that its effect is to prevent disease. The fact is notorious that a dose of poisou which will scarcely affect a vigorous man in perfect health will kill a weak one, Now what is the cause of epidemic diseases? Poison in the air• At this season the atmosphere is surcharged with the seeds of intermittents.re mittents, rheumatism, pulmonary disorders, billious cemplaints, and the like. I crsons whose nervovs systems are relaxed are the first to succumb to these distempers. Brace up the physical energies then, with this po tential vegetable tonic. It is the most pow e -fcl recuperant which the botanic kingdom has ever yielded to patient research and ex cxperiment. Try it. The blindest disciple of the old medical dogmas will at least admit that a tonic and alterative, compounded of approved herbs, roots, and barks, can do r.o harm, while the testimony of thousands invites a trial of its virtues. Allcock's Porous Plasters These plasters have the compactness of ofkid leather and the flexibility ofa silk glove. They have cured varicose veins and external aneur isms. For all affections of the chest' weight upon the diaphragm or upper portion of the bowels, in colds and eoughs, tor injuries of the back, for all bruises, for a weak back, for nervous pains of the bowels, and other nervous affection and cramps, for heart affections, —in all these caies they have to be properly appreciated. DR. I. T. HENDERSON'S LETTER, Farnville, Louisiana, Marbh 8, 1850. DR. T. ALLCOCK, — Sir: 1 have been suffer ing under a severe attack of neuralgic disease of my bowels for years, with hypertrophy of the heart, and have tried everything known to the practice of medicine from the very best M. D's ; but truth prompts me to say that your plasters have given me more permanent relief than anything else I have used, and I believe will p oduce a perfect cure. The counter-iiritant effect of your plasters is produced in such a mild and gradual way they so invigorate the circulation around the parts to which they are applied, and exert up on all nervous diseases such a great sedative influence, that I place them confidently at the head of every plaster now in use. Yours, very truly, I. T. HENDERSON, M. D. BR. TOBIAS' VENETIAN LIN J MINT. DIED OF CROUP—WHAT A PRETTY and interesting child I saw last week ! Rut now alas ! it is no more. Such was the conversation of two gentlemen riding down town in the cars. Died of croup ! how strange when Dr. Tobias' Venetian Linsment is a .certain cure, if taken in time. Now mothers, we appeal to you. It is not for the paltrj gain and profit we make, but ror the sake of your infant child that now lies at your feet. Croup isadengerous disease; but use Dr. Tobias' Yeuetion Liniment in time, and it is robbed of its terrors. Always keep it in the house YOU may not want it to-night, or to-morrow, no telling when—but armed with this Lini ment you are prepared, let it come when it will. Price ouly 40 cents a bottle. A very fine New Stock of Goods will be received the latter part of this and the first of next week at the Corner Store, by P. A. STEBBINS A Co. ©a?" The President's Message covers 16 octavo pages. We will publish it in our next week's issue. ©ay There will be a discourse delivered in the Methodist church, Thursday of this week (Thanksgiving Day), at II a.m. B<k,our columns are crowded with ad vertisements. Be patient, many expire this week. fgyAs to the Atlantic AJGreat Western Railroad passing through the coal fields of Potter, we say nothing, because—>we know nothing. We give, however, the speculations of some who profess to know about its pass ing through other localities. g@°*We desire to call attention to the ad vertisement of the Ulysses Academy, which will be fonnd in another column. It has a full corps of competent instructors and is about entering upon a course of encreas ing usefulness. Strange—that the Democraticfpress is debarred the {pleasure of publishing the late election news. New Jersey even, in whose fragrant arms they have been accustomed to revel, has disappeared and her familiar face is no longer to be seen. 0, democracy! Thou ''art a lame duck, and we pity thee 1" assembled on Monday of this week and organized by electing Hon. Schuy ler Colfax, Speaker of the House, and Hon. Edward McPherson, Clerk. Nc disposition of the Southern Reconstruction question is likely to be made before January. WATERFALLS. —The New York Observer publishes a letter, written more than thirty years ago by the Rev. Dr. Judson, on the van ity of the heathen women, in which he cites as one proof of their heathenish customs, that the Karen women wore fancifully con structed bags, enclosing tha hair, and sus pended from the back part of their head! The origin of''waterfalls" is now explained. CAMERON COUNTY. —The Emporium and Cherry Run Oil and Mining Company have received their machinery and erected a der rick on their lands on the Driftwood. On the lot where they are erecting their new derrick, on the Driftwood, near the new saw mill of Mr. Holmes, there are to be found a continuation of those surface indications which so much enhance the value of new lands in the heart of the oil regions. Thi< company had the services of an eminent oil man, who gave every encouragement from the existing show.—The Emporium Citizen complains that they have no church there. The editor's remarks are rather spicy on the subject. FLAX MANUFACTORY. —Not all of our read ers are aware that we have in this county a factory for the preparation of raw flax for manufacture into flax-<sotton. Messrs. Sears & Bostwick have converted the old Herring ton Mill property in Middlebury, into a fac tory of this kind. They have fitted it up with improved machinery, and are doing much to develop the resources of the county. We learn that they have harvested about 100 acres of flax this season, and have work enough to employ some dozen or fifteen hands until spring. These gentlemen deserve to meet with very great encouragement from our farmers. Why not earn a reputation for flax culture as enviable as that we are gaining for butter and cheese and fruit ?— Tioga Agitator. s3s"' We take the following from the Sus quehanna Zeitung, a German paper published I at Williamspert; "The German Settlementinthe South-east-j em part of Potter county, is surrounded with 1 woods, and with the exception of tolerable roads to Coudersport and Wellsboro, has no means of ingress and egress; the Philadel-' phia k Erie Railroad being almost inaccessi-j ble to them. An effort was made a long . time ago to build a road to North Pass ; but was defeated by party spirit among the in habitants—those voting the Democratic ticket opposing all proposals. Considering it right to omit such a useful and necessary project reminds us of the story of the man who cut off his nose to vex his neighbor by his disfigured face. However by an act of the Legislature a State Road Is to be built from YoungwomanstoWn to Germania. It will be 27 miles long—ll miles in Clinton and 16 miles in Potter. Commencing at Youngwomanstown it follows the Young woman's Creek east about 1J miles, leaves the main creek, and follows a small creek in a north easterly direction until the heighth of j the mountain is reached, thence on the moun tain between the streams emptying into Youngwoman's creek and Paddy's Run till it enters Potter county, then between the by streams of the first-named and Kettle Creek, [and descends into the valley of the Upper " Kettle Creek. Three Commissioners are ap -1 pointed to build the rond and have the power to loan SB.QOO, and the road taxes of certain ; lands in Abbott and Stewartson townships, 1 j PotterCo.,and in Chapman township, Clinton i | Co., are set apart to pay this debt at six \ years, and in case this is not sufficient, these : lands will have to pay aa extra road tai for : six more years.
