The Daily Review Towanda, Pa., Saturday, Nov. 26, 1881. EDITORS 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD "Daily Review" only 25 renin per month. Try it, Comes to Grief. S. Boyd Martin, one of Dauphin county's Commissioners, has been arrest ed and held to bail in .$1,500 to appear at Pittsburg and answer a charge of con spiracy in connection with other agents of the graveyard insurance companies. This man Martin is the individual who is directly responsible for all the scandal that has been attached to Governor Iloyt's name in connection with speculative in surance. lie organized a mutual com pany in Ilarrisburg, long ago, before the graveyard policy was thought of, and in duced several prominent gentlemen to be come associated with him in the business. Subsequently he obtained recommenda tions from Governor Iloyt, Senators Cam eron and Wallace, and others high 111 authority, setting forth that the company was worthy of the trust and confidence of the people. Afterwards Martin began to dabble in graveyard policies, using the recommendations given especially that of the Governor, to advance his work. Hearing of it, all the original officers, we believe, save Martin, resigned, and at last, through the efforts of the ex-officials a surrender was made of the old com pany's charter. But Martin plied the business, meanly using the letters of com mendation given originally in behalf of the old company, and by their use suc ceeded in securing many favors. Gov ernor Iloyt had printed a lithograph letter denouncing the business and ex plaining the swindling game Martin was j playing, and these were sent out in return j to the many inquiries forwarded to the j State Department concerning Martin j aud his business. But the name of the | Governor and others continued to be scandalized on account of the use made j of them by Martin, a use whicn is now I likely to lie ended. One thing is sure, if: Mr. Boyd Martin is convicted and sen- j taueed, it is not at all likely that his! friends will ever have the cheek to go be- j fore the Pardon Board in his behalf.— ! Union Leader. John Bellingham, whose, crime nearest resembles that of Guiteau, was put on his trial on the 15th of May, 1812. for having killed Spencer Perceval, the English Min- i istcr, May 11—four days previous. The j defence was the same as in Guiteau's case—that he was insane; but the pris oner, who took an eager part in the pro ceedings, delivered a short, sensible, | speech, complained that the trial had; been hurried on with indecorious speed, and the documents he relied upon for his defence bad been taken away from him. j The speech was fatal to its utterer; and ; although his counsel, Mr. Alley, brought j forward affidavit after affidavit to show that Bellingham was mad, the jury ans-1 wered in the affirmative Harrows' (the i Crown Prosecutor) oft repeated quest- j ion, " Was the prisoner at the bar, at the ; time lie committed this crime, capable of : distinguishingtietwcen right and wrong?" j The revised census for 1880 just pub-' ished, places the population of the United States at 50,155,783. being an increase of about thirty per cent, since 187 d. This country ranks second in population among the world's great powers. European Rus sia contains about G0,000,000 inhabitants, Germany 43,000,000, Austra 37,000,000. I' ance 30,000,000, and England and Wales 25 000,000. Basing our computation upon the present rate of increase of the nations named, 20 years hence the United States will have secured the first place, with a population of of 85,000,000. Rus sia will then contain 71,000,000, Germany 48.000.000, France 38,000,000 and England and Wales 27,000,000. A number of young Englishmen are working on a farm at Le Mars, la. They are pupils of an Englishman who owns a large tract there, and are learning the business with a view to conducting exten- ! sive farming operations in the far West, j I There is a large English colony at Le J i Mars, including many sons of aristocratic j families. George Law, a millionian, is dead at his late residence in New Yor'r city. He began life as a hod carrier, and could not read or write till after he was married. He rose to be one of the greatest and most successful of contractors. He was once a politician of the Know Nothing , stripe. He leaves an immense fortune. I The rout's Washington special says Scoville is now very confident that Gen • eral Butler will take part in the defense - of Guiteau before the trial ends. It is re -5 ported that in \ lew of this probability, - printed copies of the testimony are sent -! regularly to him. | The convicted directors of the defunct I Mechanics and Laborers Savings Bank, of - I ' , .
