Kirk to Ladies Take Hold Energetically Do for Worthy Local Object. The Sanatorium Aid aociety hell a meeting in the parlor of the Bandolph Inn t riday af lrnoou that had an atteudaoce of about 60. Miss Anita Burt, president, presided, and Mis Annie Walsh per formed the duties of secretary in the ab sence of the regular ottioer, Mrs. A. E. I tie constitution and by-lawa presented by the committee Mrs. j. F. Mead, Mra. E. O. Blanchard and Mrs. prater MeUger -were read and adopted. The constitu tion states that the object of the aociety shall be the assistance of the sanatorium in any way deemed ueceststry or advisable; that any woman may become a member by signiug her name to the constitution and by-laws and by paying the 25-ceut en trance fee; that no funds shall be drawn from the treasury or devoted to any pur pose whatsoever except by a two-tlnrda vole of ail members present at a businesa meeting. The annual meeting of the aoci ety is to be held at the sanatorium, but at ot tier times it may meet where the presi dent and two or more mem here of the ex ecutive committee tnink best. The execu tive committee is to have charge and di rection of all social and other entertain ments, and shall suggest and devise meth ods for obtaining money. Thirty-seven ladies signed the constitu tion and by-lawa Friday afternoon, pay ing the required entrance fee and swelling tne previous number of 20 to a total mem bership of 67. It was voted to have annual dues of fl, payable quarterly, or aj the member feel disposed, and f7.75 in duea were paid that day. The entrance fees amounted to 1.25 and the treasury baa at present on hand ill. Mra. Homer White, chairman, reported for tue executive committee and an nounced that a masquerade was in proa pect with an entrance fee to the hall, a promenade and dancing. At the conclusion of the business session, Dr. J. P. Uiflord, the medical director of the sanatorium, was introduced and ex plained the object of the institution and the wava in w hich the Aid aociety can be esjieciaily helpful. He said that hospitals are always more benevolent than money makin ; enterprises, and the one iu Ban doloh ia no exception to the general rule: ita 5(1 stoc kholders, H of whom are women, expeciing uu uniuonw, medical director aerving without salary. While not a source of wealth, the sanatorium is yet of incalculable value to the community, aflordiug, as it does, a place w here critical cases can be treated and skilfully cared for without removal to distant towns; providing a body of trained nuraea w boae acTvieea can be ae- j cured w hen needed, and giving pnysiciana an opportunity to watch dimcult opera tions, aee that their patients have that done w hich ahould be done, an prepare themaelvea to oiierate when emergencies arise. The doctor w ho attends a patient knows bia condition much better than a stranger and knowaw hat ahould be done to gain desired results. When the iwtieut Is aent away, it occasionally happen! that he d es not have that done for him in an operation that he ahould have done, and the physician who attends bun before and after the hospital treat ment has to bear the blame for the surgi cal error. Here the loi-al physician, with out the expense of a long trip, can see bis patient operated upon, know what la done, and have him continually under his care. At present many patients have to go away because they can bo treated more chtaplv at a hospital where their casea are made to contribute to the instruction of medical students. And here the Aid society can lind its work. By endowing a bed at a coat of a year, the society can enable such worthy case to go to the sanatorium without extra expense, and the free led would mean not only care aud medical attendance but surgical treatment when necessary. Oftentimes deserving cases are obliged to leave the sanatorium for financial reasons before a cure can be effected, and, minsing the care and aurroundings conducive to a restoration of health, lose what benelit they have gained. The Aid can piece out the resources of such deserving ones by permitting them to pay what they can-if bo more than a dollar a week placing it in the aociety' treasury for future maintenance of the work ana i.,.i ,n ihem have the free use of the bed Town paupere ahould not be eligible to this help, for the town is abandanUy able and should be perfectly willing to attend to them. No appropriation for the sanatorium ia being asked from the town thi! year, it being considered .i,.i.i.. fo.r the town to pay by the L i. ... . k., miitnii need hospital care, In regard to the endowment of a bed hy the society, it was announced that Mra. J. W. Kowell wouia give vuc fvtfof the required fW, thereby greatly encouraging the ladies. Other desirable thmga that the Aid might work to secure were mentioned, and among them was an ambulance, w hose need is often felt. ANNUAL TOWN REPORT.
