Irnlng Star and Catholic Messenger. Saw OBLEANS, SUNDAY,. FBRUARY 1, i. During the recent debates in the German Parliament a Catholic deputy charged Bis narok, on the authority of Gen. La Marmora, with having at one time negotiated with Francoe for the ceasion of certain Rhenish provinesa to that counntry. Bismarok immedi CI stely jonaped to his feet and pronounced the sot statement false. Upon seeing Bismarok's denial La Marmora published a letter main taining the truth of his previousstatement. BURumre oF CHvUCaHs AND SoooL..-Po Lice Commissioner Gardner and Chief Msatsell AA express the opinion that the recent attempt to A barn St. Bridget's Church, New York, was theI work of the Communists, and part of a eon certed design upon all schools and churchbes in New York, partincularly Catholic Institutions. Accordingly, especial vigilance Is exercised by the pollee in their watoh over school-houses a and churches. Earl Russell's meeting In London on the 27th, to express sympathy with Bismarok ini his persebution of the church in Germany, was I very largely attended. Letters supporting the at porpsese of the meeting were received from the Arbchbishops of York and Canterbury and two hundred and thirty-seven members of Par liament, and speeches were made by Messes. Newdegate, Peel, Chambers and others. The A meeting lasted over four hours.t The Father Matthew T. A. B. Society, of Chicago, is perhaps the wealthiest temperance society in the United States. Its property, - real and personal, is estimated at $40,000. It has a membership of 550, also aband composed n of the members, and a company of cadets !, (boys from the ages of seven to fourteen years) o fully armed and equipped. This Sooiety con temiplate erecting on their property, corner Harrison and Halstead streets, next spring, a building to oost some $30,000. It is in contemplation to hold at St. James, a Hall, London, the day after Parliament asses bles, an aggregato meeting of the Catholics of - England, for the purpose of protesting against the conduct of the German Government in its ' proceedings with regard to the members of our religion, and to denounoe the letter ad dressed-by the German Emperor to the Sover- t eign Pontiff. The meeting, which is being organized by the Catholic Union, is intended as an antidote for the Exeter Hall demonstra tion in favor of the German Government, over which Earl Russell presided on the 27th of January. At the Catholic meeting delegatese from all parts of the country are te attend. The Lexington (Ky.) Council has made the two Catholio schools in that city- one male3 and one female-free schools, under the super vision of the city school committee and super intendent; the teachers to submit to examina tion by the school committee, and the same secular education as is taught in the other .city schools to be taught in them, the Catholie citizens to provide and fornish the school buildings in all particulars; the eity to con tribute $100 a month for the payment of the teachers. All hobildren residing in the districts in which these schools are may be sent to these schools free of charge. JEsurr CARDINALS.-The members of the Society of Jesus raised to the Cardinalitial dignity, says the Roman correspondent of the Pilot, have been very few. They make an ex press vow when becoming Jesuits to accept noi ecolesiastical dignity, if not obliged by formal precept and under pain of sin. They have always used every effort to maintain this inde pendent prescription of their Society. Hence the Sovereign Pontiff does not oblige them except through some particular or general ne cessity of the Church. The venerable Cardi nals Bellarmine, Giovanni de Logo, Sforza, Pallavicino and others, as well as Cardinal Camillo Tarquini, are examples of this. Every means were usneed by those appointed to avoid this dignity, and where constrained to it, they sighed to return to their simple life in the Fo ciety. They preferred even the "iron disci pline" of their Society to the dignity ofPrinces of the Chnrch. Cardinal Salerno, appointed by Pope Clement XI., was so constant in re. fusing the dignity of Cardinal, that this Pontiff sent him a special Brief, ordering him in virtue of holy obedience, not to think of renouncing the Cardinalate. Others obtained, through the iniuence of friends, and through their own insistance, success in avoiding the Car dinalate. They thought more of their souls than of dignities. No doubt Dr. Manning cares more for the progress of Catholicity in Eng land than he does for the " red bhat;" and the examples given of the Jesuits raised to such high position does not show that they "cov eted" the honor. An old Parisian beggar famous forhis suo cess, thus explains she business " roles " to which he says he invariably adheres: "I never ask alms of one who has dined, as rosbif renders a man selfish, nor of stout men, as it bores them to stop, nor of any one putting on his gloves, nor of a lady alone, but always of any one manifestly going to dinner. of people walking together, as their amtur-prepre makes them generous, of offleors in grand uniforms, and of people apparently seeking favor from the government-they think that a gift will bring them Inck." It Is said that the reason ladies are like ar rows is because they are all in a quiver when a beau comes. MAnRRID: 8TARKg-LASR-On Tuesday. January 57, 1374 by the Most Beo.
