,xning Star and Catholic Messenger. slW ORLEANS, SUNIdAT, MARCH s9, 1874. UIRITORAL AND OTHER ITms The German population of New York reaches 260,050. Dr. Ro'ers has started a Catholic weekly, lied the Souther, Catheie, at Memphis, Tenn. The New Catholic Church at Milledgeville, ,will be completed about the middle of pril. The" cost will be aboqt $4,000. It is a rule of etiquette in Arkansas that no true gentleman will eat with his leg thrown over the back of his neighbor's chair, if he can help it. The "first lady" business afflicts Cincinnati Jut now, the question being whether an alder man's wife is higher than the wife of the ooun ty recorder. Prosperity is a more reined and severer test of.character than adversity, as one hour of summer Sunshine produces greater corruption than the longest winter day. New Orleans is said to be the largest city, .in area, in the United States. The recent addition of Carrollton gives her about sixty square miles of territory. There is a great deal of distress in the Ger man capital. The casual poor who sought re lief in the Berlin workhouses last mouth am ounted to 13,834 men and 739 women. The dog has a great attachment for person, but none whatever for place, whilst, on the other hand, 'the cat has an attachment for place that is seldom shaken, and not the least for person. A fat French lady says: "I am so fat that I pray for a disappointment to make me thin. No sooner does the disappointment come than tie mare expectation of growing thinner gives me such joy, that I become fatter'than ever." New York has become so crowded, and the dwellings are so far removed from the business portions-of the city, that co-operative lodging houses for clerks are about to be established over the larger stores in the lower part of the city.: It will be going back to the old London fashion of many years ago. Father Monsabre, O. & D., is preaching the Lent at Notre Dame, Paris, before large and brilliant congregations. Each sermon he preaches is pronounced by the Parisian press, which is so critilsl, to be more beautiful than its predeoessor. His eloquence reminds many of Father Lacordaire, and at the conclusion of a recent conference. the Cardinal-Archbishop of Paris got up in his throne, and in a few short bat pointed words thanked the great Dominican for his magnificent oration. .e Mfnde publishes a sort of table of the Ca thelie Hierarchy, showing that " the Catholic world is divided into 865 dioceses, not incln ding the five Delegations Apostolic, the 109 Vicariates Apostolic, and the 28 Prefectives Apostolic. The two seniors of the Episcopate are the Cardinal of Angelis, Archbishop of Fermo, preconized in 1826, and the Archbishop of Tyr, preconized also in 1826. The first is 82 2 years of age and the second 87. After these two prelates, the oldest in the Episcopate is thePope, preconized Archbishop of Spoletto in 1887. It cannot be denied that this Hierarchy is an organized power. It is consolidated under the control of one man, who commends almost a thousand dioceses." ST. TEREkSA's TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY. This (Sunday) evening, at 4 o'clock, there will be a meeting of Catholic gentlemen in St. Theresa's school house for the purpose of start ing a Catholic Total Abstinence Society. We need scarcely mention that the movement has thehearty approval of the zealous pastor,'Rev. T. J. Kenny. The committee on -organization of the State Union, which has the matter in L' charge, has issued a card, which will be found I in our advertising columns, inviting all Cath olic gentlemen of the parish who desire to take part in the organization to be present. PR ARRIVED AT LAST.-The horse donated by Mr. Kennedy to St. John's Fair, and which will be contested for at the Morning Star table by four young gentlemen, lias arrived at by last, and can be seen at Shawhan's stables, Gravier street between Rampart and Dryades. Each ant in an ant hill knows his com- a panions. Mr. Darwin several times carried ntat from one hill to another, inhabited Ipparently by tens of thousands of ants, fall aut the strangers were invariably detected nad killed. Thinking there might be a E amily odor by which they were recognized, te put some ants from a very large nest Gr, nto a bottle strongly perfumed with as afetida, and restored them after twenty. our hours. At first they were threatened ,y their companions, but were soon recog- 5 sired and allowed to pass.
