To which we add the "Larghetto" of Beethoven full of p pathos, and the "Symphony for children" Haydn, whose strains, gaily enhanced by a lively sounds of toy instruments were re ved with unstinted applause. Leche, when the people de arted homewards with a pleasant souvenir of eir day at Spring Hill College. JESUIT'S COLIGE. The twenty ninth Annual Commencement and distribution of preminme took place at this college Thursday evening, July 26th. The programme consisted of a beautiful classic drama entitled, "Ion," and a lively farce '"In he Lion's Den," with the usual intermissions o instromonta! and vocal music. The play of Ion is in five acts. It was meg ilAoently mounted as regards scenic effects, tage appointments and costumes. The cast was the very best that could be had in the lege-and than this nothing further need said to those who know the high standing f to institutution and the recognized abilities its scholars. We will mention particularly the three yonng men to whom had been en the principal characters; Masters M. y, I1 Toledano, and M. Hoey, and com d them highly for action, bearing, delivery d stage knowledge. These same young men also figured very minently in the farce, which was most ex ellently readered. YIOBII.E. From the w tiis fr, of August let, we con dense: The annual commencement of this well known and well-soctained school was very largely attended yesterday morning. Not only were care filled, but there were a great many private carriages as well as public conveyances on the grounds. The hall was closely filled, and it was a great compliment to the scholars that the audience were so patient in this nun comfortable hot-weather. The reverend clergy were out in full force. We noticed Right Rev. Bishop Quiolan, Very Rev. Father O'Callaghan, V. G., Fathers Browne, Keeler, Ryay, Arm strong, Morley, McCafferty, Roduit, Imeand, Serr% Antonio, Kirwin, Gardiner, and others. e also noticed some of our most prominent citisens present as spectators. The exercises opened by a spirited four-hand overture on two pianoe," Euryanthe." On Monday, the time-honored institution of the Jesuit Fathers, Spring lBill College, had its 47th annal comtmencement. The debate on the Electoral Bill would have done credit to older heads. The play of t:e "Heir at Law" was rendered in a manner that reflected credit upon all engaged. The music-well, it could not be surpassed. Father Ilollaiud was himself, and the music was a part of him. Mr. W. Robinson gained new laurels in his ode, " The Death of the Archbishop of Quito." Mr. C. Aitkens Valedictory was fully up to the requirements of a grsduate of Spring Hill College. H. Rlves A. B., attorney-at-law, Macon, Miss,, delivered a magnificent address on Pine IX. E. J. Ber mudez A. M., delivered ao address on "Simon Bolivar. It was a treat seldom enjoyed. On Messrs. Bermudes and Rive were conferred the degree of A. M. The degree of A. B. was conferred on Messrs. C. Aitkens, Paul Leehe Edgar Poinoy-bonors well deserved. ADISH. Great effirte are being made to comllete as ral:dly as pssible the works of the second ae well as of the first line of German fortresses. Tite new forts on the left bank of the Rhine at Cologne, which as originally intended were not to be finished before the end of next year, are already approaching completion, and will be ready to be oclcupied by their garrison during the course of the present summer. The girdle of detatched works round the fortress is to be compeoted by forte on the right bank of the river. Plane and designs for these have been drawn up, and contracts for their execu tion entered into; but the work is to extend over four years.
