U.S. POSSE TRAP
HOSTILE INDIANS
Tse-Ne-Gat’s Band Surrounded
After Fierce Fight.

Piutes Must Surrender or Be Exter
minated Is R e port From Bluff, Utah
—Bad Indian, Cause of Trouble, Is
Charged With Murdering Sheep
Herder.
DENVER, COLO. Reports from
Grayson, Utah, by telephone to
Dolores, Colo., say that the band of
Piute Indians under Tse-Ne-Gat, which
fought a desperate battle with a posse
commanded by United States [Marshal
Aouila Nebeker, has been surrounded
in Cottonwood Gulch, near Bluff.
Leaders cf the T 'o'nforced posse ex
pected to renew tie attack, unless the
Indians surrendered.
It was believed that both the orig
inal party of redskins with Tse-Ne-
Gat and the detachment known as
Pcsey’s band, which came to the re
lief of Tse-Ne-Gat after the battle be
gan, had been cornered in Cottonwood
Gulch.
Armed Ranchmen Rush to Aid.
So far as could be learned at Gray
son. there were no more casualties
after the fighting in which J. C. Akin
of Dolores, a member of the posse,
and ’“Jack’s Brother” and an uniden
tified girl. Indians, were killed and
several wounded.
Word has been sent throughout the
frontier settlements near the Colora
dc.-TTtah line, and from all sides has
come word that ranchmen are arm
ing and hurrying toward the scene of
battle.
The fight started early Sunday
morning, when the whites, after sev
eral days’ journey by wagon from
Cortez, Col., arrived at the camp of
Tse-Ne-Gat. a Piute leader, whose ar
rest on a charge of murder was
sought.
Tse-Ne-Gat’s Alleged Crime.
Tse-Ne-Gat, who also is known as
Everett Hatch, is charged with the
murder last March of Juan Chacon, a
sheep herder in Montezuma county,
Colorado. After his arrest the Indian
escaped to Utah, where his father,
“Old Polk,” is said to have advised re
sistance. The band of which Tse-Ne-
Gat is the leader is known as an un
controllable nomadic tribe which has
on many occasions given settlers of
southeastern Utah trouble.
According to the version of three
Indians of the Navajo Springs agency.
Tse-Ne-Gat met Chacon on a highway.
They rode together for half a mile,
when Chacon is believed to have con
fided in the Indian that he had just
received him pay. At a fork in the
read Tse-Ne-Gat waved Chacon good
by. Later a shot from ambush felled
Chacon from his horse.

The bidding for Johnson’s profes

was installed in his new quarters.
Three promoters, all of them ready
and willing to meet his terms, said
the? wanted him. to fight Sam McVey.
McVey’s manager. Lawrence, declares
he has already tied Johnson up with
a contract to fight his man in Ha

Germany Not Blockaded.
LONDON Complaints at the
government’s delay in enforcing the
blockade or whatever reprisals have
been decided upon against Germany
arc voiced again in the mo r uing pa

that Germany is being subjected to a

is the fact. Food and raw materials,
the paper says, still are being import

A Remarkable Prediction.
Manasseh Cutler of Massachusetts, in
a circular in 1757 “booking” the set
tlement which the New Englanders
were about to plant on rlie Ohio at the
mouth of the Muskingum, declared that
“the current down the Ohio aud the
Mississippi” for produce and merchan
dise of all sorts would one day ”be
more crowded than any other streams
on earth,’’ which was a remarkable
prediction considering that it was
made twenty years before Fulton’s
Clermont was launched in the Hudson,
which was the first steamboat in the
world ever put in successful operation.
Family Fun.
They had been having a quarrel, and
after Mrs. Gilson had spoken the last
word, as usual, she felt that perhaps
she had overdone the matter and, pick
ing up the evening paper, began to
read little items from it.
“Oh. Henry,” she laughed, “isn’t this
funny? Here is a man advertising for
a silent partner with $1,000.”
“Funny!" growled Gilson. “Yes; it’s
terribly funny. If he’d married you
he’d have been darned glad to get a
silent partner even if she didn’t have a
cent.”--Philadelphia Record.
Comprehensive Advice.
It is probable that seldom has better
advice been given than in the follow
ing condensed rules: Drink less, breathe
more; eat less, chew more; ride less,
walk more; clothe less, bathe more;
worry less, work more; waste less,
give more; write less, read more; talk
less, think more; preach less, practice
more. To follow these is to strive for
better health, further popularity and
greater success.

A little chew of pure, rich, mellow tobacco—-cut fine,
short shred—seasoned and sweetened just enough, cuts
out so much of the grinding and spitting.
Take a very small chew—less than one-quarter the
old size. It will be more satisfying than a mouthful
* of ordinary tobacco. Just nibble on it until you find
the strength chew that suits you. Tuck it away.
Then let it rest. See how easily and evenly the real
tobacco taste comes, how it satisfies without grinding, how
much less you have to spit, how few chews you take to
be tobacco satisfied. That’s why it is The Real Tobacco
Chew. That’s why it costs less in the end.
It is a ready chew, cut fine and short shred so that you won’t have
to grind on it with ycur teeth. Grinding on ordinary candied tobacco
makes you spit too much.
The taste of pure, rich tobacco does not need to be covered up with molasses and
licorice. Notice how the salt brings out the rich tobacco taste in “Right-Cut.”
One 6tnall chew takes the place of two big
chews of the old kind.
