POPULARITY OF BLUE GRASS Kentucky Soldiers, on Return March From Battle of Tippecanoe, Gath ered Seed in Indiana. The tradition that the Kentucky sol diers who fought at Tippecanoe took back with them the aeed that has made j blue grass famous in central Ken- j tucky, has never been questioned or seemed to require authentic proof, de* clares a writer. Mrs. Levering says, in her •“Authentic Indiana:” “It was on the return march from i the battle of Tippecanoe that the sol- ! diers from Kentucky gathered the seed of the blue grass which they found growing in Indiana, and carried it home with them, thinking it was a su perior variety because it satisfied the hunger of their horses so well that they would not eat corn. It flourished so well on the limestone soil of central Kentucky that it made that state fa mous.” This statement was based on information obtained from early set tlers of Indiana. Kentucky was not known as the blue grass state until many years after the battle of Tippe canoe. As long as slavery existed, Ken tucky, lying south of the Ohio river, was classed as a Southern state. It never was classed as a central West ern or middle Western state along with Ohio and Indiana. In the census report of 1910, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin were classed ns “East North Central states” and Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi as “East South Central states.” When Indiana was admitted to the Union, in 1810. it consisted of 13 coun ties, viz.: Wayne, Franklin, Dearborn, Switzerland, Jefferson, Clark, Wash ington, Harrison, Knox, Gibson, Posey, Warrick and Perry. In the subsequent creation of 79 counties out of these, making 92, the boundaries of the orig inal 13 counties underwent material changes. WIFE'S FEAR WAS AROUSED Stranger's Inquiry About Hubby's De scription Was Merely to Warn Against Unhealthy Coconuts. He entered the ladies’ sitting room at the railway station, walked up to a woman whose husband had lett the room about ten minutes previously, and calmly inquired: “Madam, your hus band went out to see the river, didn’t he?” “Yes —why?” she asked, turning pale in an instant. “He was a tall man, wasn’t he?” “He was,” she replied, rising up and turning still paler. “Had red hair?” Oh, what has happened?” “Weighed about 180 pounds?” “Yes —yes! Where is he —where is my husband?” she exclaimed. “Couldn’t swim, could he?” “He’s drowned —my husband is drowned !” she wailed. “Had a silver watch chain?” contin ued tlie stranger. “Where is my husband? Where is the body?” she gasped. “Do not get excited, madam. Did your husband have on a gray suit?” “Yes. Oh. Thomas —my Thomas!” “And lace-up boots?” “Let me see him —let me see him!” she cried. “Come this way, madam, but do not get excited. There is your husband across the street at that fruit-stand?” “Why, yes, that’s him; that —that’s my husband!” she exclaimed joyfully. “I thought you said he was drowned.” “No, madam, I did not. I saw him buying a coconut, and T believe it to he my duty to say to you that coco nuts are not healthy at this season of the year.” The Emblem of France. The fleur delis is the emblem of France, and is believed to he the white-flowered Florentine Iris, the flower rle luce. “What sayest thou, my fair flower de luce?” says the Eng lish king to the French princess in Shakespeare’s play. The French have a pretty legend of their lily which tells that at the baptism of King Clovis, of the long and perfumed hair, a blue banner came fluttering down from heaven over which were sprinkled golden fleur delis. From that time they appear on the arms of the country. They hare a verb, “fleurdeliser,” mean ing to embroider scattered flowers over a fabric, or, as embroiderers say, to “pepper with flowers.” Edward in borrowed the lilies of France after his war with that country and they were borne by England until the beginning of the nineteenth century. t Cock and Bull Story. Cock fighting is still the national sport of the Dominicans, although it is declining in popularity. Under the na tional gambling laws cock fighting may be prohibited. It may, however, be li censed by the various municipalities, j and it usually is, as it yields them a j good revenue. While bull fighting is | permitted in the Dominican republic, j it has never been popular in this island. ; At long intervals a toreador comes here i en route from Spain to Peru or Mex ico, and a few bull fights are held in | the various towns, but they do not at ] tract a large attendance. There are i no professional bull fighters among the I Dominicans. —Commercial Reports. — Poor Financier. He —We’ll have to give up our intend j ed summer trip. The sun beats fiercely on a lim ited area —say ten square miles of bar ren prairie—and as a result the air next the earth becomes very hot, perhaps 120 degrees, and the mass is constant ly increasing in volume. Above the wfurm air is a stratum perhaps 20 de grees colder. By and by a passageway is made, the hot air begins to ascend and the cold upper air, pressing downward, forces the lighter air through a chan nel thus formed. It begins to whirl, it increases in velocity, a surface cur rent forces it along, and the tornado starts on its destructive journey. The terrific cyclone originates in much the same way, only differing in extent. The most violent cyclones or iginate in tropical latitudes, in the At lantic ocean, to the north and east of West Indian islands and in the Pacific, in the China sea and in the hood of the Philippine islands. The reason they are so destructive is because they are carried such great distances by extraneous influences. DR. MEYERS Dentist Mrs. A. D. Lyon, Asst.
