of the roads here and that as competi
tion would naturallT follow a reduction
in both freight and passenger rates would
ensue as a matter of course, without tbe
intervention of the legislature.
The difficulty appeared to be awaken-
ing the people, not the business men
alone, to tbe state of affairs and that
they should arise and demand, if tbat is
tbe proper word, that the wide guage be
continued to this place. A letter ap
peared In the Evening News on the 12th
of last April, wherein It was shown
that every barrel of flour consumed by
the people of this community cost 10
cents extra through having to be trans
ferred to our narrow gauge system.
When it is considered the many thous
and barrels of flour brought over the
Mineral Range and II. & C. railroads tbe
tax those lines mulct our people for this
article alone annually,"amounte to a very
considerable sum, which of course, with
tbe merchant's interest on the outlay, all
comes out of tbe pocket of the consumer,
the workingman. This, It should be re
membered, is only one item.
Now, however, the business men ap
pear to have awakened from tbeir leth
argy and it is to be hoped that the peo
ple, who should reaD the benefit, will
back up the action which may be taken
at tbe meeting to be held on Thursday
next in Ilancock-and j all business men,
whether in a large or small way, should
m tke a point of attending and so help
a ong not only their own interests, but
t lose also of their friends, tbe consumers.
It is to be hoped tbat the supervisors
of the various townships in the county,
as well as the officials of the various min
ing companies will, in tbe interest of their
employees, attend tbe meeting, so that
the railroad companies will fully under
stand that the people of the copper coun
try mean business and will insist upon
one of the roads being extended to this
place. Py the way, there wa, some
years ago, if we remember correctly, a
movement made by Mr. Charles A.
Wright and others for a connection wltb
the broad gauge system at Watersmeet,
or some place near there. What has be
come of it?
When it is considered that the C, M. &
St. P. runs to Champion, only about
forty miles from Houghton, and tbe C. &
N. W.to Michigamme, this side of that, it
is wonderful how our people would have
allowed themselves to be taxed by the
D., S. S. & A. and the narrow gauge roads
for so long a time without a concerted
kick; but now one is about to be made
let us all put aside our jealousies and
other matters and kick the ball with a
will and keep it rolling until we see tbe
train that leaves Chicago run to Calumet
direct. This can be done if the people and
the business men will only act together.

Let t' Pall Together.
Yesterday's mail brought us a call
for a "Business: Men's Mass Mating," to
be held at St. Patrick's Mall, Hancock,
on the afternoon of Thursday next, tbe
10th of March, the object of the raeetiog
being to take some steps towards induc
ing either the C. A N. W. or the C, M. &,
St. P. railroad to continue its line to
Houghton county which would naturally
be to this place as t be metropolis of tbe
copper country.
Tbs editor ol tbe New, on one occasion
visited the officials of the C. & N. W. rail
road in Chicago for the purpose of bring
ing op the question of tbe extension of
ineir line to nougnton coumy ana was
informed that, although the manage
ment was desirous ol doing all it could
to pleaee its patrons in the copper coun
try, it would be impossible at tbat time
to extend their line into the copper
country, which to them looked only as a
potato patch considering the vast
expanse of country in the west they were
then opening up. Last year when In Chi
cago, w called on Mr. , one of
tbe vie presidents of tbs C, U A St. P.,
nt. Patrick's Day.

tbs question to tbe disgust of thoatlvo
catea of free and unlimited colnnpo. Ac
cot ding to the Popullxt spokesmen, their
party Is the only ono that earnest silver
men will be ablo to pin their faith to la
the oomlDg campaign, and for this reason
alone they expect to carry scores of con.
gresslonal districts now represont-od by He
publicans or Democrats.
A Clsaa Fwscp Eipected In Texas.
The ropullsta expect their preatest
(rains, of course, in tho Eouth and west.
In Texas they think tliey are sure of al
most a clean sweep. The Lone Star Rate
Is wild for free silver, and, ns to the no
curacy of this statement, It Is not neces
sary to depend alone upon tho testimony
of the Populists. That is the report
brought to tbe natlotml capital by Demo
crats aDd Republicans as well. A mighty
wsvs cf sliver sentiment has swept over
Texas, which Is one of tho preatest and
most prosperous states In the Union. The
Democrats say tliey will bo lucky If they
save a pair cf congressmen out of tho
wreck. Some of them thluk Mr. Dalley i
tbs only man who will be ablo to secure a
re-election. This state of affairs does not
exist because tho Democrats of Texas nro
against silver, because they nro not. They
are for free coinage all tho tlmo. Dut tho
silver sentiment In that state has bocomo
convinced the only way tobrinRalwut free
coinage Is to go clear over to tho Populist
party, which declares for free silver lu Its
platforms without any equivocation.
There are many ether states In which
the Populists expect to ruako hcadwny.
Perhaps there is not a state cf tho south
In which they aro cot active and well or
ganized and approaching the coming cam
paign with more enthusiasm than ever bo
fore. In the far west, too. they count
upon gains. Altogether they deem their
estimate of 60 votes in the next congress
conservative.
A Ralanc of rower.
If those expectations be even approxi
mately realized, we limy have that decid
edly Interesting state of affairs In Washing
ton a house of representatives in which
the third party holds tho balancoof power.
This Is the dream of tho Populist lenders.
and they now believe they ure nearer the
goal than they ever were beforo. If they
sucoeed In this purpose, they will make
things Interesting for tho new adminis
tration, no matter what Us politics tuny
be. Wo should then havo a congress in
which both houses wero dominated by the
avowed friends of silver, for It is notorious
that tho setiato Is now ond will for some
years continue to be a Mlver body. The
Hepubllcans. by coming political changes,
may secure a clear majority in tho Bcuato,
but they will always bo dependent upon
the silver men from tho far west, nnd
those senators havo of lata thown a most
stubborn Intention to stand by tho luter
ests of their section, regardless of tho do
slresof the remainder of tho party. If,
then, the Populists wcro to pet n balancoof
power In the house, a lino stato of affairs
we should havo In our national legislature
The Populists do not confine their ambi
tion to the houso of representatives. They
are also after the electoral collep:o. They
believe they are going to do great things in
the coming presidential election. Four
years ago they cast 1.000.000 votes for
Weaver and elected 22 presidential electors.
This year they claim they will bavo C.000,
000 votes and nerhnns 73 eloetnr.il vntr
In fact, they talk of controlling the bal
ance of power In tho electoral college. Just
as they talk of controlling the balance of
powor In the houso of rouresentalives.
There aro Populist leaders lu Washington
who bcllevo their rarty will poll a proatcr
number of votes at the coming election
than tbe Democrats, but this claim Is of
course scouted by Democrats ns absurd
Time will tell.
Tfa Growing; Senat.
Though the United States senate has
now become f uch a largo body that It has
In many respects changed Its character and
its tone, it Is suggested by a western sena
tor that the body is to goon growing till it
reaches tho century mark that Is to sny,
the senate of tho near future will bo com
posed of an even hundred men, representing
the 45 states now lu tho Union nnd tho five
more which it Is generally believed will be
admitted during the coming decade New
Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indian Ter
ritory and Alaska. That would mnke the
American Union consist of 50 states, with
an even hundred representatives In the
senate chamber quite a change from the
senate at the outbreak of the rebellion,
when there were only 83 states.
One finds the practical politicians of
both the leading parlies worrying already
about the money with which to carry on
tbeir campaigns. To tho politician n cam
paign without a largo campaign fund Is a
failure. Lifo ts not worth llvinsortho
game of politics fit to be played unless tho
coffers are full. Neither sldo expects to
havo much money in the coming contest.
The Republicans claim they will not need
it, and the Democrats say they can't raise
it. Much of course depends upon the
nominations. If Mr. Whitney should be
the Democrat lo nominee, ss mnny people
think he will tie, I ha Democrats would
have eaough money to worry their oppo
nents. Colonel Morrison's irlends are not
of th moneyed sort, nnd Mr. CnrliKli.'.
ability to raise money is not much greater
man mat or Morrison.
tlclans familiar w
