fa itont Tom General Orders No. 1 From the Brigadier Headquarters Concerning the 111 tie Practice. Ktldruily u Ik M'roui Track Ak( th Flah llaataUa-KehaU 1'flfbrtlUa-Other Sews. General order No. 1, bave been issued from brigadier headquarter ol the Nat ional (iuard and contain four pages con- earning rifle practice to take place thi year among tbe different companies. 1 1 baa been derided to make rifle practice a special feature of tbis year's work in tbe National (iuard, aa tbe commanding offi cer ia of the opinion that tbi work i needed much more among the State mili tia than tbe mere form and practice of daily drill, although thi ia in do wine lost right of. Company commander are instructed to begin instructing their companies in the lesson of rifle practice immediately, ho far as is necessary to enable them to comprehend the general principles of shooting. As hereafter, in estimating the efficiency of a company, rifle practice will be an im portant factor, it behooves every com pany to strive to excel in this most im portant branch of soldier's work and tbe local company will soon commence work in order to sustain its well known stand ard of excellence in tbe State soldiery. Last year tbe Light (iuard Dracticed shooting on a small scale, but the old range behind Tamarark, which was the one used, is very inconvenient and ar rangements for a better range will prob ably be made !or this year's work. At the aanual encampment held at Is land Lake rifle practice on an extensive male will be beld and as tbe local com pany has some good material a good rec ord could be made, with a little practice. I'lih Planting. Some of the local sportsmen, who are interested in obtaining tbe fish to plant in rivers in this vicinity and principally in Keweenaw county, think our Kewee naw correspondent is evidently on the wrong tack in regard to tbe Montreal river. In tbe first place they sav that the fish are so small that they will be plant ed ten or more miles above an v place here logs are driven on tbe river and much nearer tbe river's source than is gener ally understood and further that it will be two or three years before the trout grow large and braye enough to get down to the driTe and that possibly by that time the river will not be used for driving logs. Tbey also state that in several rivers where logs are driven every year the trout fihbing is excellent, in fact that in these rivers it is even better than the av erage. However, most of th fishing is done above the drive. Then the fishing season does not open until May 1, and by that time a large percentage of tbe logs are out of tbe river. The parties interested in this are par ticularly anxious to bave the fish planted in good place and are doing everything to see that no injury will be done them until they are of requisite size. The trout-fishing season opened today and already the followers of Isaac Wal ton are preparing fo- a long season of plaur? in this line. Iterhsblts Celebration.
