How They Were nc Settled by Fair light In Court. In some parts of Germany, when the relations of husband and wife become strained, 60 to speak in other words, when each returning day gives birth to ' new squabbles and the man's hand is as ready as the woman's tongue the -couple were brought before the magis trate, who, after listening to recrimina lions, ordered them to prepare for the -ordeal by battle. The man was placed in a cask, which was then nearly filled with sand, so that he was covered up to ' the waist. In some towns a pit was kept handy for tho purpose, just as the ducking stool was kept on Bankside, op posite St. Paul's. When he was thus . half buried, the man received a short stick for his right hand, while- his left band was tied up across his chest. Ho was thus one armed and could only de liver his blows if his opponent came near enough. The lady put on a linen garment, the Tight fcleeve of which was lengthened. In tho end was tied up a stone. Tho sleeve projected about 'i inches beyond her hand. Mie had thus a formidable weapon, but in order to use it she had to get close; to the enemy. Now observe tho ituatiou and tho chances. If she succeeded in bringing the stone down upon her husband's head, she might knock him wnselcss; she might even "brain him, but in order to do so she would expose herself to the full blow of his stick. The battle might, in fact, be settled by a mml'Io assault. Uut mark the craftiness of man. It was better to m&ko a woman ridiculous than to knock her silly. The husband, therefore, if he was u philosopher, did not try to hit his wife; lie warded her blows with his 6tick. He tried to catch tho sleeve upon his stick; tin n the stone Hew round and round and the lady was caught, fcfho could not move, and the victorious hus band dragged In r unwilling head first -into his cask. London Queen. j . i-uner. An amusing story is told of the crown rprincesaof Italy, who excited so much interest during her recent visit to Lon tlon. The Montenegrin royal family is one of tho oldest in Europe, but also one of the poorest, and the court is not large. 'When J'rineess Helene arrived in Home, i distinguished My in waiting tried to patronize her, but tho crown princess effectually put a stop to this at once. ""Your royal highness must find tho icourt life a great change. The etiquette .and stillness must bo very novel to your royal highness," was tho remark made, "but the princess replied, with sangfroid, "On tho contrary, I think it is wonder ful how well things nro dono at court .here considering it is so very 'now. Henry Maata ol this burs and Miss Johnson, recently of Minnesota, were joined in the boly bonds of wedlock on Saturday, and a reception was held at tbe home ot the groom on the evening of that day. A large number of their friends attended to wish them a happy Journey alone the stream of life. Tbe old reliable Central mine is begin ning to assume an air of activity some what akin to what it possessed a few years ago, a number of men being taken on this week. Heretofore the, mine has been run on two eight hour shifts, but with the additional force secured it will now be operated full time, or with three shifts of eight hours each. Tbe timelost owing to the fire will soon be made up with the increased force. John II. Cat ins, formerly of this burg has at last gone and done it, he having led to the altar, two weeks ago, MissSul livan of St. Ignace, a daughter of the well known lumberman. Thomas U Sullivan. Mr. Gatiss' many friends join the Nkws in wishing him and bis Jyoung bride, bon yoyage. EAtiLE HAKROB. The party held here on Thursday was largely attended and a very pleasant time was bad. The music was furnished by Prof. Soloman, of Calumet. The party being under tbe patronage of tbe following gentlemen, it seems almost eu perfiuous to say that it was tbe success, socially, of tbe season: Messrs. P. O. Decker, T. J. Bennetts, Dr. Macltae, Thomas Parks, Will Haley and It. M. Smith. Charles Kingston, who has been visit ing at Pontiac all summer, has returned to bis old love and bis cheery voice can now be heard in the Central meat mar ket. Miss Maggie Bradley, formerly of this sequestered spot, is now engaged as post mistress at Mancelona, Mich. F. W. Halsey spent Monday and Tues day in the vicinity of Lac La Belle look ing after tbe interest of O. Hebard & Son. Mrs. B. A. Dunbar, of Houghton, and Miss Nellie M. Smith, of the same burg, are visiting friends here. John It. Bennetts has resigned bis posi tion with the Kingston estate and on December 1 will have charge of tbe books of Reynolds & Jeffrey, of Laurium. ELEVEN HANDS OF POKER. Fky Ought to Have Won Every Time, but Didn't. It's the bewildering uncertainties of the great game of poker that make it so popular with most Americans. Systems and the law of average do not seem to obtain as much in the play of this game as they do in most other games of chance and skill. This point never was more strikingly illustrated than it was one night not long ago in the short space of half an hour. ' The game is a regular institution on one of tho late suburban trains out of New York. The first stop that is made by this train is exactly ao minutes after the train leaves New York. The game always 6tarts on time, and the cards are gathered up and tho players jump off usually as the train begins to get head way after the first stop. This explanation is necessary to fully appreciate the array of hands that makes the real point of this story. One player with a good memory held in the 80 minutes' play the following hands, with these results: Four aces won, of course. Five full on aces beaten. One flush beaten. One straight beaten. Three aces beaten. Four sets of aces up all beaten, Threo sevens boaten. Queens up won. Jacks up won. Tens up won. Nines up on fours beaten. In this really remarkable collection of 1 1 hands only 4 of them were win ners, nnd yet the man who held them says that ho came out even. Ho got scared on his five full and on his flush and just called. Ho lost considerable on his three aces, but ho won more on his queens up that ho held only once than he did on his four aces. His jacks up netted him more than any other hand, for ho had them pat and played thorn so on tho opening of a fat jack pot. Tho mo full was beaten by a ten full and tho flush was beaten by a queen full. Nono of tho other men in tho ganio thought that his hand was especially strong or weak, and it would bo expect ed naturally that tho array of hands given above would quit tho gamo con siderably to the good if one did not know that most of them were beaten. New York Press. Headaches. For most aches of the head tbe hot water bag is a good friend, but when the faco has the flush and the eyes show a peculiar look which tell of a congest ive ueadacno then heat in that neich- borhood is insupportable. Instead of this apply cold. If you have no ice batr. lill your hot water bag Drcttvfull of ico water, put in pieces of ice as largo as will pass tho mouth and lay this at the bacu or tbo patient s neck. Applied to tho armpits and wrists, ice often affords great relief to tho sufferer. The Cattle of Arbela. Arbcla, which gave its name to the third groat battle between Alexander and Darius, Is a town in the Turkish villayet of Knrdistan, on the caravan route between Bagdad and Mosul, about 40 miles southeast ot the latter city. The battle, however, was not really fought at Arbcla, but at a place SO miles distant, then called Uangamela, now Karmells. THE NEWS IN BRIEF. CYCLIST BLOUIN IN JAIL, Tenchant for SUallug- Feminine I'nder Mear Gets 11 1 in la Trouble. Detroit, Nov. 25. Joseph J. Blouin, a professional bicycle rider, has a mania for feminine underwear. Blouin, who Is a" Frenchman, has been on the pro fessional circuit for three years and is well known throughout the middle west. Blouin wandered into the back yard of F. W.
