A debat on tbe qnestion: Rolvwl; That the Ilawaiin Inlands -should be annexed to the United States," was argued on the affirmative side by Zdwin It eder and Miss Mabel Foley and on tbe negative by Otto Kohlhaas and Hiw Eliza O Connor. The arguments presented showed that tbe debaters thoroughly understood their subject and the diff-rent points of Interest were clearly brought out. Tbe affirmative, however semed to have a little tbe ad vantage of tbeir opponents all the way through and the judges decided two to one in favor of annexation. The debate wee followed by a quartette selection by '. Misa Nora Nelson and Nina Varson v .and Smart McLean and Fred Reuther ' Thi- number entitled "Nursery Rhymes," - was so heartily applauded that a repeti tion was necessary. The program from begin ning to end was excellent. Next week the Sophomore class will have charge ot tbe exercises and the following week the Freshmen will have a chance to distin guish themselves. Parents and friends are particularly Invited to attend these exercises as their presence would en courage the pupils in this kind of work. Not a little interest has been aroustd in tbe race which takes place at the Sup erior ice rink In Laurium this evening between Murphy, Hancock's record breaking long distance runner, and Will Lyon, the loc 1 mile runner. A mile run ning race on ice is a little out ot the or dinary, but as these two runners are considered very speedy and there is con siderable rivalry between them a tight race is looked for, Tbey are both in good condition and prepared to put up the race of their life. The Laurium band will be in attendance to furnish excellent music for skating and dancing. The ice is in good shape. . Tbe Marprue of All. A feature will be the exhibition drill which will be given by one of the boys' clasoes during the evening. . There will be a couple race at the Su- peiioa ice rink on Tuesday, March 1, for a grand prise of f 15 and the champion ship of Houghton county. This being the first couple championship race ot tbe county for the season a large number are expected to enter and a large Towdis assured to witness tbe first coup e race held at the Superior rink. O'Brien and Antoine Enterza haye arrived here from Chicago and taken positions in the cigar factory ot Charles Koppelman. They are each experienced cigarmakers and the standard of the "Mild One" will be fully up to what it has been in tbe past. Mr. Enterza is a native Cuban and is not a little interested in tbe struggle for liberty which his people are now hay ing. Frank Trevillion occupies a cot at the Calumet hospital, haying been injured in an accident at one ot the Calumet new shafts. He was caught by the skip and came within an ace of being killed by having his head crushed when it waa stopped and Treyillion extricated from bis perilous position. As it was he had a terrible squeeze and is badly bruised about the body and bis (ace is hurt. The attraction at tbe Skating Payilion this evening will be the race between Fredstrom and Peterson for the boys championship. There has been consider able rivalry between these two boys since their first race and they are very evenly matched. Tee race this evening prom ises to be very exciting. Miss Florence Schumaker returned last Thursday from Hancock where she has been ylbitiog friends and relative for the past week or more. Rev.
