Monday, the 17th iust.—-the an niversary of the birthday ot Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, was duly observed by the citizens of High land. A celebration consisting of an address, toasts and responses, intermixed with suitable vocal and instrumental music, was bold at Mark's Hall in the evening. The ball being tilled at about S o’clock, the exercises opened by the choir singing “A Happy Greeting to All." After which Hr. Chas. Egan deliv ered in a pleasing though forcible manner the following address; *• Ladiks anh Hkxtlkmax: —'The occasion of our mooting boro this evening is to do honor to the mem ory of the grout and glorious apos tle of Ireland, St. Patrick." “With feelings of regret we an nounce to you the al*scnce of Hen. John Janvier —who on account of sickness is not with us to-night who was to respond to the toast. “ The Day wo Celebrate/’ “The day wo celebrate is the anniversary of the birthday of St. Patrick, who converted and elevated pagan and intidol Ireland to a fertile islands of Christians, who have for 1,500 years, through reformations, revolutions, stnrva tions and tyranny, kept the faith of that illustrious saint enshrined in their hearts.” “It is unnecessary to say with what reverence and love the name of St. I’atriek is received to-day, not only in our dear native land over the sea, but in every corner of the globe in which there is an Irish Catholic community or where an Irish heart beats. Fifteen hundred and six years ago to-day was born the meat illustrious saint that adorns the pages of history. Though his cradle was rocked on other soil, God had written on his brow the Savior of Ireland, and during a long life of devotion to a, holy cause ho beheld the chains of idolatry broken. The labor was excessive, but the spirit of Clod nerved Ids saintly heart and strengthened his body to heroic endurance; and, dying at the advanced age of one hundred and twenty years, he again beheld faith’s rock-founded temples lifting their domes heaven ward, proclaiming St. Patrick the apostle and Ireland is Catholic, and he left behind him monuments of virtue that the storms of time nor political bondage can ever destroy. The name of St. Patrick is indelibly inscribed on the hearts of the Irish people,—his deeds shine as bright ly on the earth as the stars of heaven, —thus to-day throughout the length and breadth of the civil ized world tin; Irish Catholic cele brates the anniversary of the birth day of his patron saint.” “As Irishmen we have no day of political jubilee, hut we have, thank (Jod, abetter one, the 17th of March, the birthday of the apostle who raise i us from the yoke' of idolatry to the genial sunshine of the Divine Creator.” “ With hearts filled with these memories, we come here to-night to express our admiration and devo tion for the memory of a saint who planted Christianity on the soil of Ireland. For this large and appre ciative* audience on this, our first celebration, 1 may congratulate and cordially and most heartily wel come you all.” “The Harp that once through Tara Hall " was -ung by the choir and Rev. I’. K. Ryan made a very spirited res | >ouse to the toast, Ire land. After the singing of that patriotic song. “America,” Mr. M. J. Casey reponded to “ The land of our adoption.” Mr. Casey eulo gized our form of government and very forcibly set fortlial wholesome Democrrtic doctrine of home-rule. To the toast, “The Hierarchy,” Rev. S Trant responded in a man ner which could not fail to please MINERAL POINT, WIS., FRIDAY, MARCH *21,1879. all who hoard him. The response was very interesting and instruct ive. and its delivery showed Father Tr.vut to ho an able Christian priest who was faithfully endeavoring to fulfill his mission hy preaching Chirst and Hint crucified. Mr. Patrick Delaney responded to "The Sons of Krin.'' Mr. Delaney is a fluent and lloyvery speaker. Ho hud the close attention of his audience while he delivered u lengthy eulo gism on Irishmen as statesmen, yvarriors, etc.* 'l'hc choir sang “ Home, Syyeet Home,” and those who desired dispersed to their home*, hut the majority remained to take part in a social dame. The Delaney Brothers furnished excel lent music and about seventy couples kept the lloor occupied until about five o'clock on Tuesday morning.
